LA: Looking forward to the photos. In that heat seems like it would dry pretty quickly!

Setting out the masking to paint the orange, realised the white was not opaque enough, so back to the shed to respray... Another four days to dry properly, then try masking again...

Well Tony, that came out super nice. I agree with your ideas on the paint colors, they did indeed have far too much to do than come up with new paints. I think you nailed it with your mix. It looks the part and is very convincing. Well done, Sir. I will update the front page and thanks for taking us along.

Tony, great job on the 162, looks really nice in that scheme, bit different from the usual 162's.

Hi Tony

The 162 looks great, a very neat, simple finish. The roundels really stick out against the background.

Can't see any of the struggles with the kit that's for sure.

With the temperature back down today I will try painting the orange on the cobra.

Since we're talking about weather, it's 41 degrees C, or 105 degrees F here in Melbourne today. Phew.

I've finished my He 162, it was surprisingly quick in the end, must be that I'm in form after the Weekend GB.

Hope you like it. I've used Berna Decals to depict one of 5 that were allocated to France after the war. They were painted grey, internet research cam up with a couple of shades, 'Beige grey', which to me seems like RLM 02. I even saw someone interpret that as Beige and paint up a Beige He 162 :)

Someone else quoted an eye witness that they knew who recalled them as 'Bluish grey'. That's good enough for me, I used Tamiya's mix for French Light Grey which is two parts of XF-25 Light Sea Grey to one part XF-2 matt white. It came out about right to my eyes. I struggled with the colour for the green trim too, and ended up using Lifecolor's 'Vert Khaki' as I couldn't find many other French greens for the WW2 era. I figured any paint used in 1946 would be war surplus, they had more to do than come up with new shades of paint.

Here it is on it's journey.

and completed.

Cheers

Tony

Since this one has had new life breathed into it, I'll get back to my EA-6B.

Thanks, BK.  Now that the timeline is extended, I've got to dig out 67-463 of the dust and try to finish her.Bow Down

Got as far as fuselage together and wheel bays white.  Now that I've got some incentive, the rest should go fairly quick in a couple of months.

Thanks BK, you'd think I'd be able to build a F-16 in a year and half. I'll see about trying to finish up if can take care of what I'm working on now.

Hi every one. I was just looking through the forums here and was really surprised to see the modern aircraft build still open. I had packed my Blackbird along with othe kits I have away because of health reasons. But last week, I thought, I'm going to get it out and finish the SR 71. I only have a few more decals to put on it and it will be done. I need to get the little flash drive for my camera then I'll be able to transfer the pictures to my computer.

Hopefully I'll be able to come in more often now. I do miss reading everyones comments and seeing thier great looking builds.

Thanks Brandon. I was only thinking this morning that I should have entered more in this GB. So many jets that don't fit into other GBs. I've done the priming and preshading on my He 162, hopefully I will finish the paintwork today. It's quite a simple scheme, overall light bluish grey with green trim on the nose and front and rear of the engine pod. Hopefully I'll be able to shoehorn in some more before this GB ends. Cheers Tony

For those that may have missed it I am extending this build out until mid year 2018 due to the fact that I won't likely have time to start a new one this year and to give those who have not had a chance to complete their builds more time to do so. Keep them coming folks.

LA I pulled the close up of that primer job and it looks like you are going to have some nice lines on that bird when you put the color on her!

Tony: Looks perfect to me, great job esp with all the issues you had to overcome. The French scheme is going to look cool.

LA: Your primer coat looks perfect too, looking forward to seeing her with paint.

Tony, it never fails to amaze me how you 1/72 guys can pull of such amazing work on such small kits. Incredible. Looks like you are winning the battle.

LA, I knew that helo would look the part when primed. Your work has made it look like it came that way, and that was your desire. Well done, Sir. I'm looking forward to seeing it in it's fire colors.

Coming together nicely Tony.

Your probably right about the Allies capturing 27. I am sure you have seen this photo and a couple of similar ones. These aircraft belong to JG 1 and are awaiting the arrival of Allied forces to formerly surrender.

LA, helo is looking good, going to be an interesting scheme you have planned.

The old Dragon 72nd aircraft kits seem to have a bad rap for fit from a lot i have read. But i have built a few including 2 of those 162's, and i rather like them. They just take a bit of TLC.

Yes it was a great innings to see, but the action was all on the wrong side...

I thought the Dragon kits were supposed to be better than that, sounds like you have had your work cut out to slap it into shape.

So now we are at primer stage. Well it was primer, fill sand, primer, fill, sand, primer before this point. In the background is a colour test card - the photos of the USFS bird shift between a dark red and orange, and the draw decal instructions call for International Orange, but that's too Orange I think. So my preferred colour is the one on the left, 25% Orange and 75% Red mix. But first I need to get the gloss white down.

I was at day 2 and day 3 too LA. They were long, slow, hot days ,but that was a magnificent innings by Cook. I'm glad I saw it, you don't see every ball of a test match deuce too often. BTW, your helo is looking great. I use PPP for around the canopiues too, in fact I just did that on Dragon 1/72 HE 162 that I've finally gotten around to this morning before work.

I seem to have lost some of the photos I took earlier in the build. I'll try to find them and post them later if i can, because there is a lot of work that goes on inside the fuselage of this kit. This kit is unique in my experience, there is no positive fit for ANY of the parts, at all. Makes it hard work, but there aren't too many He 162s out there in 1/72. As far as I know, there is this kit, also released by Revell, an earlier Revell release that looks like it's early, and the Hobby Boss easy build, which has less detail.

Anyway, on with the show, I'm going to aint this thing like grey and use some decals from Berna Decals to depict a French one in post war service. As I understand it, the Allies captured 27 of these at one airfield, and the French were allocated five. Interesting.

It will also complete my atempt to use decals for every aircraft on a decal sheet, I've never done that before. Two  FW190s, a Do 335, a Bf108 and this He 162, all in French markings.

Before closing the fuselage, I packed as much lead as I could into the nose. However once I added the tailplane assembly, it sat down on it's tail.

Luckily for me, I still have this opening behind the cockpit, my plan is to jam so more lead through it, with a gob of CA gel to fix it in place. It should work, as it's still in front of the main undercarriage. Also, that triangular piece between the wheel bays is a nightmare. They give you the undercarriage doors and this bit all molded in one piece. You have to cut it into three then locate this piece with no positive attachment points. I got it done, but it's hopelessly fragile, and I've already broken it twice whilst just holdng the model lightly. Yippee...

There is some nice detail inside the wheel bay, but the insert is 3 or 4 mm too narrow for the fuselage, so you have to work with that. I've managed to make it look acceptable...just.

Here it is sitting on it's undercarriage correctly, the additional weights worked :) I also added the canopy, and took this photo before using PPP around the canopy frame. The kit has those slots behind the canopy that allow for a movable canopy, but they didn't exist on the real plane, so they've gotta go. It seems like I've used more CA gel and putty on this thing than I have in a very long time, but its hard to see the CA gel in these photos. I'm not complaining though, we take on these  challenges as modellers :)

Cheers

Tony

LA: She's really coming together. Looks like that canopy was a pain to mask, at least you were able to use multiple layers of tape.

Masked off the glass and then stuffed up the installation - the port side is sitting wide, stuck on now and not going to move it. Used PPP to fill in the gaps around the glass, it works well in these gaps. Also been scratchbuilding some of the special accessories for the USFS bird.
