Well, X-mas tree or not it is coming along very nicely. I don't think I can recall ever seeing one of these in TB trim. Now I'm even more keen on seeing it come to life. Looking very good there Mongoose.

BIG progress tonight, red striping is complete!
In the promo renderings certain parts of the plane are a brighter white. I masked those off and shot the same MCW white through my Sotar airbrush at 10psi. This gave a distictly brighter finish than the Paasche single action I used for the large surfaces.
Maketar paint masks arrived today and i put them to good use. I noticed after removing them that there is a much finer demarcation line between layers, better than 3M fine line pinstriping. Maybe half as thick i would guess. I made the masks by first taping tracing paper to the plane, sketching the curves i wanted, and then transferring those to a light piece of cardstock. I used the cardstock to layout the pattern on the Maketar masks and cut them out with a fresh #11. After applying the mask I lightly sanded the white with a 600 grit pad to rough it up a little so the red would have something to stick to. RCW recommends painting the clear coat, or next paint layer i would assume, within 8hrs and since it had been longer it needed some prep i thought.

Mongoose, this one is gonna look great. With all the work you are putting into the paint it will be stunning. The exhaust looks pretty good as well and some weathering will make it pop. I love following this one.

A little bit of progress tonight. I sanded down the wing tips where i had adhesion problems and resprayed them. All but the vertical stabilizers glued on. I’ll do those after i paint the red on them this weekend. I taped it up to do the brighter white color on specific features based on the lockheed Martin pics.
I decided on 3:3:5 pale jet exhaust, duraluminum, copper for the exhaust. If its still a little too coppery after matt varnish i may spritz it with some brown to tone it down.
Mongoose: Gee, I've had painting issues but not much with fisheyes so far (cross your fingers). Good luck with, I do get lots of orange peel and I know how frustrating it can be.
LA: Nice work there too, she's going to look sharp.
Lostagain, that pit looks the part. I agree with everyone else on the details you've added. The sheepskin and IPs look great and the extra touchs show up nice too. That will be one nice office. Your exhaust looks like it will blend just fine. I'm gonna keep this for reference when I get around to building that one.
Mongoose, your patience is epic. I would have lost it on the paint issues. But, you saved it and it is looking quite nice. All that extra work is gonna make one very nice, if not huge, build.

yep, last photo has the fisheye. I think i can sand it down once it dries. Will just repaint some parts. Maybe thursday given my work schedul this week.
that is a bummer, and a lot of extra work. The photos you show there look good.
Is that the fisheyes in the last photo? Dont recall getting anything like that, my problems are pebbly finishes, airbrush farts or paint runs.
Starting to mod the exhaust area of the cobra. Had taken out all the IR suppresion exhaust, now modifying it back to a plain exhaust. Used old RF-104 and Airbus 330 bits, now reinforcing with Milliput for strength before attempting to sculpt the area smooth.
Well it’s still looking pretty good. Had the typical alarm bells go off when i start painting. I had all the individual parts done except the last stabilizer...when i hit it with paint it fisheyed horribly! Cleaned it up and everything went ok. Just a little extra lacquer thinner to take the paint off and respray. Then when i started on the fuselage the very same thing happened. I stopped, cleaned it all again, still had problems. Washed it all with dawn then cleaned with rubbing alcohol again. Almost all the problem was gone at this stage but it was obvious something had the primer contaminated. My test piece that i was using took the paint fine. I decided to try just misting the surface from a distance since nothing else was working. That seemed to do the trick. ( Edit: i misted it, let it dry a minute, then went over it like i normally would with the airbrush. It almost sounded like i misted the whole coat the way i wrote it) It’s looking better and better as it dries. The paint is leveling nicely and is really smooth. I’ll have a few places to sand and respray but fortunately 2 of them are where the red and blue have to go so they will be easy to redo. Here’s the latest for your viewing pleasure...and if you’ve encountered the fisheyes before and can offer some advice please throw it my way

That thing is HUGE mongoose! The primer coat looks very smooth and consistent.
Small steps on the Cobra, sprayed the cockpit parts, some panel painting before drybrushing instruments etc. Also drybrushed the seats to bring out the sheepskin look.
That paint did go down great, very smooth!
Mongoose, that thing is HUGE. You're making progress, which is more than I am at the moment. It really looks like your efforts are paying off. Well done.
Uggh, Well I don't think I will finish on time unless we get a reprieve until Christmas . Progress is being made though and now that I'm putting on the primer I ordered some maketar paint masks, the curves and print your own sets, so i can do all the graphics.
The primer is on! I'm using MCW paints for the first time on this one (I think Finescale just did a review of these a few months ago). Boy does the lacquer lay down really nice! My son said it looks more like powder coating than paint. My favorite part of these paints is that if you get a run, just spray more paint in that area and it almost always goes away. The paint just flows really well, which is great for a beginner at painting models. The biggest thing I've learned with primer now is that I still need to work on my glue control. I can see spots were it has come up through the seems and messes up the lines.
My 1st photo op is my expanded paint booth...it got cold out before I got time to put together all the parts I have for a booth that I can vent outside so I did the next best thing. You can't see him but my son is behind me with his jacket on

Mongoose, you definately got it handled. The seem work looks just fine. I agree with everyone here in that you've tackled those challenges head on.

Thanks BK, I don't know where the last year went to (merciful God I'm starting to sound like my mom.....). Anyway here's hoping I can get back to it on the F-16 early next year. She'll be posted on the aircraft section if not here in any case.
Tony, nowt wrong with having another 162 up there. I do like that Dragon kit, its a nice little build.
