TJ, sorrry about your troubles. Once you get through it I'm sure it will be a show stopper.

Toshi, the Mossie is really looking great Yes. I'm amased how far you have come Surprise. I think it looks far better with the cowling off that with see-through cowl anyway.

I finished the Tonka pit last night, I got a later start on it than I wanted due to a busy weekend. Nothing fancy, just OOB. Hopefully I'll move to working on the nose section tonight. I'm curious it see if the Hase kit as the same fit issues with the nose and fuse as the Italeri.

BTW, look at what was flying over our house this weekend.

Thanks Bish, I am really excited to work on this kit. There's something about the Tornado I've always liked.

I don't know if you saw the picture I added to my post of the B-17 over our house this weekend (Memorial Day) in the US.

O, nice, don't see one of those flying over here that often.

They did have a commemoration at the US military cemetery near Cambridge yesterday which included a poppy drop. This year is 75 years since the friendly invasion of US forces into the UK, so was a special anniversay this year.

LOL, I never thought about it like that.

TP, I was surprised at the detail for it.

Rooster, actually it was my wife that ran out while I was mowing on Saturday and grabbed my attention. She heard those Wright/Cyclones and couldn't wait to see what it was. She loves the sound of radials and Marlins. She would love the Daimler-Benz 601 and BMW 801 if she ever had the pleasure to hear them.

The 17 sure is slow compared to anything today. We are on the final leg of the Boise Airport (still high enough not to be too loud except for the occasional F-35) and can watch most everything in the pattern.

Justin, the dam is definitely starting to look like a dam. Yes I always enjoy watching water being modeled. It's something I've wanted to try since being a kid, and don't recall ever actually doing it.

The Lancaster ain't looking too bad, either. Stick out tongue

Edit: Oh, now it has camo. Slick.

I wouldn't lose any sleep over the utube video. It seems to me in life, it is getting very hard to do much of anything for the first time. Dunno if that's a fact or just me getting older.

Johnny, me too re The Saint. I was quite young but for some reason was quite taken by the show. Although I enjoyed his later work, nothing Sir Roger did afterwards lived up to The Saint in my own mind.

Sorry the Italeri kit is off to a bad start. You seem to prevail well, so we'll be interested to watch you work through the difficulties as you always do.

Gamera, that cockpit looks good. I guess the Tempest must be of Hawker manufacture too as it bears striking resemblence to the Typhoon office I'm working on.

Toshi, that Skeeter is awesome. I will be sad to see this one end, it has been so much fun to watch.

Also, I agree strongly with Steve that she looks better with the cowls covers off than clear plastic anyway. Yes

Steve, good looking pit! Pretty cool about the B-17 flyover.

Ernie is on board. Cool!!!!

Me, I'm installing fiddly PE bits on my Tiffie office framework (slowly, as usual). Nothing quite progress-photo worthy right now. Will maybe post a progress paint before primer. PE detail always looks neat to me, then it gets painted and blends in with everything!

I thought I was swearing off 1:48 detail that will never be seen. Right.

Thanks guys. Didn't get much done over the weekend, being Memorial Day I ended up spending a good bit of it working on some 1/35th G.I.s for a little project of my own.

Steve: That cockpit looks good and wow that B-17 looks awesome! Nothing much flies over the house here but crows!

Justin: Ahhhh, sorry my mistake. I think I said something similar to Steve with the white water on one of his dioramas. But I swear to me it does look all nice and frothy before it dries!!! The Lanc is looking good, nice work on the camo.

TJ: Know what you mean about seams. Sometimes you just have to say 'the blazes with it' and move on.

Greg: Actually far as I know the Typhoon and Tempest cockpit should be pretty close to the same. Seems the Typhoon was so damn fast and powerful they'd rip their tail planes off in a power dive. So Hawker started work on reinforcing the tail sections and decided to try a new wing design on the revamped fighers. The new Typhoon II was so different they went with a new name- Tempest. The funny thing is they kept both designs in production.

I finished the upper surface camo today, as well as dipped the canopy and some other glass in future...now I am just waiting on the canopy masking kit to arrive!

Lancaster dambusters build by Justin Ryan, on Flickr

On a bit of a downer note...clicking through you tube this morning,, I came across a video of the exact same dio build as I am working on!  Try as I might before I started, I never came across this video in my research!   I mean, this guy did the EXACT dio I am working on...he did more detail on the dam, but lost the sense of scale.  My build,  I attempted to model the dam in close scale proximity to 1/72, which did make what I built into it a lot more selective...oh well...I didn't really expect to be the first guy in history to attempt what I am building......

Looks excellent, I wouldn't worry about the other diorama.   Yours is coming out great!

Sorry Toshi, I knew I'd leave someone out sooner or later. Great work there, inspiring work. You motivate me to get my butt in gear.

Greg: It's an interesting story. I think the Typhoon was the aircraft where the RAF criticized the plane for poor rearward visibility and designer Sidney Cam replied 'My plane goes so bloody fast you don't need to worry about what's behind you.' Looking forward to more photos of your Typhoon.

Thanks guys, for the compliments! I am really enjoying this build!  As for the youtube guy having done it already, I'm not worried...just see the quote in my signature.   I'm just having fun building it!

While waiting for paint to dry, I decided to work on a quick build...a pro street dragster from Revell. ...needless to say, it's turning into a "not as quick build as I had originally intended " build.  I won't hijack this thread with those build pics, but I do have a post in the autos section....

Modelcrazy, it's been a few years, but in 2015, we had the CAF's B29 FIFI flying just above treetop level in my neck of the woods, and the year before that, we had the B17 that played the Memphis Belle in the movie giving rides over our house!  Stuff like that is so exciting!

Best way I know to tell is the Typhoon has a thicker wing with more rounded-off wing-tips where the Tempest has a thin wing with more squared-off wing-tips.

I hope Airfix while still on the roll they've been on with classic aircraft will release a new tooling Tempest. I think the Eduard kit is the only one right now in 1/48th.

Hi all,

Just poppingin to say hello and great work so far. That Dambuster dio looks awesome, and I can't wait to see it come together.

Toshi - nice work on the Mossie. I'd love a kit that size, but I have nowhere I could put it.

I'm loving the Harrier, too.

There are too many good ones to name, but I've been following along via email as a lot of time is being taken up with work and an imminent move, so I haven't gotten much done on my Brisfit...yet.

Not sure if it was mentioned, but the Tempest also lacks the prominent protruding cannon seen on the Typhoon.

As far as new-production kits, Eduard is set to release a newly tooled Tempest in 1/48 at the end of this year. And, of course, Special Hobby has a really nice one in 1/32.

Ye, i think the cannon, or lack of, are the most obvious vibisible differances, but again for me its remembering which is which. maybe i should build one of each, that might help.

I have the same problem with the F-102 and F-106.

I installed the cockpit in the nose and closed it up last night. A bit of a tight fit but after fitting, scratching my head trimming a little, rinse and repeat, I got it in. Now maybe I can get on with the rest of the build. Waiting for the decals from Hannants so that could take a few weeks

Dasbeav, when it comes to skill for doing things, you just gotta start small!  I practiced painting figures when I was younger on those little green army men!  As for dioramas, start with a small scene...something with a little scenery.  Watch videos on YouTube, then try it out on your own....

BD: Very good point there! How could I forget those gigantic honkin' cannons poking out of the wings!?! !!Dunce

Great to hear about a new tooling Tempest from Eduard. The one I have is apparently one of their first full kits. It's not terrible or anything but just not that detailed.

I've looked at the 1/32nd Special Hobby kit but I've been bumbling around on Tamiya's 1/32nd Zero for almost two years now and still have a Hasegawa 1/32nd P-47 in the stash so I'm holding the line on buying any more giant kits for right now.
