Monogram Mafia IV Group Build
Posted by stikpusher on Wednesday, June 14, 2017 3:31 AM

So here we are again. Today, June 14, Flag Day... the US Army Birthday, and the opening for the celebration of the American model company, Monogram.

That's right, Monogram Mafia IV

Da Rules:

1) Any kit of Monogram or Revell USA lineage, to include lines that those companies absorbed such as Renwall and Aurora. This year we are expanding to include AMT kits as well. But, any kit mold must be of USA origin to qualify. ESCI molds later issued by AMT do not qualify. Revell Germany kits whose molds originated outside of th US do not qualify. Monogram Pro Modeler kits of Hasegawa, Tri Star, or other origin do not qualify. MPC molds of US origin later packaged by AMT/ERTL do qualify.

2) Timespan- this GB kicks off on July 4, 2017. No end date is yet set. Those wishing to claim the MM IV Badge must build two kits within 6 months, their time starting once the first kit is commenced.

3) Have fun- any subject, and genre, any scale. Crossovers with other GBs are allowed, but no previously started projects. Ya start from square 1 with both builds. Building two at the same time is fine.

Who wants to join La Familia Monogram?

Don Stik, it would be a pleasure to join this GB. I'll need to get my Intruder off the bench, and then an X-Wing, but then I'll get going on this. I'll be building the 1/48 Monogram Do-335 and the 1/48 Monogram "High Tech" F/A-18. Thanks for hosting this again!

Stick, put me down with this one. I built this kit back in the 70's and wanted to give it another go. I'll see what else I can pick up at Eagle Quest this Saturday.

Put me down for the 1/48 B-29. I want to do the 1/48 sabre dog, but I am unsure of its original orgins. If that is a no-go then I will go with the 1/48 F-102.

I'm in with a 1/48 P-47N.

For a second, my son also asked me to help with his 1/48 B-24J.

If that doesn't count, I'll do Nowotny's Me-262.

I build 1/48 scale WW2 fighters.

Have fun.

Ok guys, and gal, the roster of aspiring family members is updated, along with kit choices for those who have selected. Lots of good ones there so far.

Now I have a request. I need somebody to be a good consigliari here. From mid October thru mid November I will be going on a long overdue real actual vacation and off the net for days if not weeks. I need somebody to cover in my absence during that time period. Any volunteers?

Ok Don Stik & Fellas.  Here are my entries.  Not sure which Jet I will pick. Depends on  Time of course. F-8 would be easiest for sure. need an F-8 in my collection   Family...

Right now I am thinking the P-51 will be George Preddy's last mount.

P-47 will be 367th FG

Fw-190... who knows.. Might just do one of the box schemes!

F-8 , if chosen, will be a USMC job.. Probably VMF(AW) 312 or 122 or

F-14A Option would be Hi-vis bird most likely. VF-143 is what I am thinking...

Quick question as I just realized by looking at the roster that my kit is an F-18A. For some reason I was under the impression it was a C and I ordered decals for a C in 2004. How much visible difference is there between an A and a C? Would it be possible to convert my kit to a C? I looked around a little bit and it seems like there are just a few antenna bulges here and there that are different, but the good people here are far more knowledgeable than I am. Thanks for the help.

not much in the way of external differences mostly internal with avionics and such. I don't know what the technical term for them is but those little stabilizer looking things sticking up on top of the wing extensions may not have been on the F-18A not sure though

Stik-I have a question regarding the AMTech & AMT/Ertil P-40 'family'-I have the AMTech P-40E, Amt/Ertil P-40 F/L & N in the stash-all 1/48-do any of those meet the criteria?

I checked on Scalemates but I'm not sure that they do.

Thanks

Bob

Regarding the C to A differences on the F/A-18, as said, most are internal. The "fences" in front of the vertical stabilizers were added to both the C and A Hornets, so are not indicative of one version or the other. They came along early in the A operational period and were on the C from the beginning. The only certain external differnce between the two that I know of are two ECM bumps on the fuselage spine behind the cockpit present on the C but not the A.

About the AMT 1/48 P-40 family, yes they qualify, those are of US origin by AMT. As well as their A-20, and F7F kits in 1/48. In 1/72 their B-70, B-52, C-135, and Flying Wings are also good to go off the top of my head.

And for anybody so inclined, the MPC Star Wars and Star Trek kits picked up by AMT when they merged are fair game as well.

Would the new Revell Stearman Aerobatic Biplane be eligible?  Genuine Revell but I doubt it was molded in the US. If it's ok it will be my 2nd selection.

Yes that kit is eligible. I know how the current state of model production is. In the end, it is an original Revell USA product.
