lewbud - glad to see you got the Bearcat done!  Since I know very little about aircraft color schemes all I can say is it looks good to me!  Looking forward to the completed Whirlwind!

taxtp - I almost went with a BF-109G for my last build, but decided the camo paint job was too complicated for me.  Your Tamiya kit is coming along nicely....can't wait to see it all built up and painted!

So I made it home in time to do one last build for the GB.  I'll start it later this evening, but I'm not sure yet which it will be:

Hobby Boss 1/72 F6F-3 Hellcat

OR same mfg and scale: Ju 87D-3 Stuka

Depends on what paints I have available.  I'm not sure I have the right blue for the Hellcat, but I'm pretty sure I have close enough colors for the Stuka

Tony,

The 109 is looking fine. Just curious, how did you manage to get through this GB without doing a Spit?

Since I got started later than I planned yesterday, I decided to go with a simpler kit.  In this case, Airfix's ancient Westland Whirlwind (not the choppa!).  However, I decided to add to the difficulty by losing the instructions.

We have something that looks like a plane.

RIK,

Are you going to attempt a 48 hour build on the SM?

Lewbud-would tomorrow morning be too late to start?

If not, I'll dive in with something from the Monogram family.

If so, no worries-I can (should) focus on neglected Group Build projects...Embarrassed

Hi Bud, yes it's 1/72.

I didn't quite get the relaxing day of modelling that I was looking for yesterday, lol.

I had planned to get it primed with the topside colour sprayed, but in the end I only got to the end of main construction. I didn't sleep well so I even got up in the night and sorted out all of the seams. The Tamiya kit is very well engineered, the nicest of the 109E's that I've built so far.

Here's the progress at the start of day two, I apologise for not posting these on the way yesterday, but it was one of those days where I kept getting called out for something.

Cheers

Tony

Tony,

I'm guessing 1/72 for the 109? Looking forward to the pics.

I'll be starting tomorrow after I get some sleep from the overnighter I'm working now. I'm going to be doing Airfix's new tool 1/72 Tiffie Ib.  I've got the Tamiya sprays, camo and canopy masks, so it should be doable after some sleep.

Anybody else coming to the last dance?

Good effort to finish the Bearcat Bud. I like it even if the colour isn't quite what you wanted. I had a Corsair that went the same way many years ago for some reason.

I've joing the last dance today - now, with this kit, finished with kit decals for Marseille's 109E-7 Trop. Start time will be 9.25am AEST, in two minutes :)

I'd better get cracking !

Cheers

Tony

Thanks MM, LT and Lostagain. Sometimes knowing all the mistakes you made colors your opinion of the build. Don't know what I'll try for the Last Dance.

Good stuff Lewbud,

See what you mean about the colour, in the photos it looks a touch green.

I have also used the drawdecal product and they do work well, as you say they are strong.

 Nice job Lewbud !

I just can't seem to get any time to myself lately so I wont promise to start anything else here.

But I will continue to "try"

Dont worry about the thumbprint, paint it Rust , and call it "Battle Damage"

Not real happy with the results, but she's done. As I said in my earlier post, the AS-8 doesn't look like Glossy Sea Blue to my eyes, plus there's no gloss to it. It may match the ANA 623 Glossy Sea Blue, but it doesn't match the FS 15042. I tried to shoot Testors Gloss onto the AS-8, but it just laughed at my attempt. The decals I used were from Draw Decals. Very easy to use.  If you've used decals printed on an ALPS machine or home printer, then you've done these.  They are thicker than ALPS decals (won't fold over on themselves), and they can be easily moved about. Here's the finished product.

The Last Dance starts Friday.

Nice work on that Mustang Bufflehead, good on you for perservering. Nice work on yours Bud, I think you will make it. It's a shame you spent 23 hours on that Caveman, seems like a dog of a kit. Cheers Tony

Caveman,

Did you see Fermis' build of the 1/72 Zvezda kit over in the helo section?  I have got to get me one of those kits.

25 hours in and she's ready for paint.

I'm so blue.

Not real happy with the color. It doesn't look dark enough and it's too blue. It also came out matte, which is good, but I'm hoping it darkens up with a coat of gloss. All the ancillary's are painted as well, so once I get off work at 1400, she should be shiny an hour later. Hopefully she'll be decalled and on her mains a couple of hours befor the deadline.

Nice work.  Interesting idea with the paint schemes.

I too like the Hind and we are waaaaaay overdue for a new tool kit in 48.  That's why I picked this kit up.  Thought it might be something different.  With the Cobra Company upgrades running thin I was hoping for something different than the old Monogram D model.  I will try to finish it this week and will post a pic or two if I am able to get it done.

Caveman,

Bummer about the build, I really like seeing models of the Hind. Yes, the final hurrah will be next weekend.

Here's where I am so far.

Proof of life.

The pit. Don't know how much he's going to see using that stick. I have a couple of Cobra Company's resin cockpits for the Bearcat (and the Tigercat, I just have to remember where I put them).

A little over four hours in, and it looks like an airplane.

I puttied her up before I left for work this morning. I should have her in the paintbooth by bedtime, maybe even painted by then.  Trying something new on this build, Tamiya AS-8 in the military sprays.  Since I can't get Model Master Glossy Sea Blue to come out well, I'll try a different route.  We'll see how it goes.

Well, only 23 hours in and I have to pull the plug.  I would take alot more than another day to finish this gift from the plastic gods.  Tons of filler and short shots were a bother but when the left and right fuselage parts are 3/4 of an inch different lengths that means major surgery to finish.  This may be a parts queen in the end.

Good luck to those still building.  If we are still going next week, I will find something.  I have next week off.

Happy holidays to all of you!

Ernest,

The scheme on your bird is very attractive, I'm surprised none of the decal makers had ever done it before.

Caveman,

Good luck. Will be watching, one of these days I need to finish the Hasegawa Hind I started many moons ago. Don't need books, there are two of them within a 45 min drive of where I live.  While impressive on the ground, they are most impressive in the air.

I'll be joining with Monogram's classic F8F Bearcat in Blue Angels livery.  If moved, I may attempt Revell's 1/72 F-4 Phantom in Blue Angels livery as well.  I'm kind of concerned about the decals because I got the Diamond Formation kit when I was about 11-12, so the decals are about 40 years old. Will definitely do a test shot before using them.

Here we go.  12:02 AM Saturday.  Should give me just enough time to finish before the jolly one make his rounds.  Have to say, this kit is something else.  Should have known when I didn't recognize the manufacturer.  Plastic is very brittle and there are alot of parts broken in the bags.  As such, the troop seats are beyond repair so I will be closing that compartment up.  The cockpit is generic, just like the Monogram kit.  But that's what I have so it will have to do.  Not much time for scratchbuilding in Weekend Madness.

Off and running.

Good luck everyone.

Ernest,

That is an interesting color scheme, I don't think I've ever seen that one modeled before.  You did a great job on that kit as well. Since you and Tony have said you'd be up to doing a build next weekend, I'll make it the final weekend of the build.

Really?  I wouldn't know about the color scheme....I just painted it to match the boxart!! Stick out tongue

The last weekend build is tentative for me....depends on when I return from visiting relatives next week.

I'm in for round 5.   May have bitten off a little much this time but I'm in with a 1/48 Mi-24V Hind F.  I don't know the manufacturer but it looks like a tweaked re pop of Monograms kit from the 80's.  I will start later this evening.

Thanks for the comments lewbud!  I really had a good time with these years quick builds, more so than previous years.  Unfortunately I'll be travelling this weekend for the holiday so I can't join in the last round.  I might just challenge myself and do a quick weekend build the last weekend of the year, just for my own kicks & giggles! Stick out tongue

As for the Mustang, here she is all complete.  You can add it to the Refused to Quit category!! Took another 6 hours of work spread over the last three days.  Be gentle, its my first time with a metal paint job of any kind!  Not sure if I did it right.  I learned its probably not a good idea to pick a NMF kit for a weekend build!

Have a great holiday weekend everyone!
