Shelf of Doom GB II - 2018
Posted by taxtp on Tuesday, March 20, 2018 9:26 PM

Hi Everyone,

Welcome to the next iteration of the Shelf of Doom GB. It will run from April 1st to September 30th 2018, so it's a full 6 months.

This is the chance to get some of those nasty old shelf queens off the shelf and into your cabinet. Crossovers are allowed. The only stipulation is that the model has been on the Shelf of Doom for at least 3 months. It can be at any stage of completion, except already completed of course ! Any plastic model of any subject is most welcome.

Let's see how many Shelf Queens we can complete this year ! I'll keep count.

Please try to post a photo of it's current state then WIP photos until you are triumphant !

The Badge:

Cheers

Tony

Note that if you want to start a bit early, I'll turn a blind eye ! It's good to strike whilst the enthusiasm is there.

My first contribution is a Czech Models 1/32 T-33A Shooting Star. It's quite a difficult build and I didn't get very far with it. I started it in January 2012, and then quickly moved it to the shelf, where it's sat forlornly ever since.

Here's the box art:

Here it is as of today:

OK. I'm in. I will be pulling my Revell 1/72 scale Type VII - C  U - boat out of the "Trunk of Death" It's about 50% completed ( Hull is glued together and painted, but all the fiddly bit's are still in the box and unpainted. )

There are two kit's in the box. I will be working on the one on top. I will post a more current photo when I start. ( she's been like this since 2010 )

Dont worry about the thumbprint, paint it Rust , and call it "Battle Damage"

Tony, i have several armour kits that were finished as a stand alone kit, though they now all need repair after getting knocked off a shelf, but i never got round to completing the dioramas. So to me, they are not complete. Trying to get a couple done this year, but if they count, i'll enter with the Italeri 1/35th Ostwind. Might give me that extra bit of insentive.

Bish, I didn't know that Italeri did an Ostwind, but I'm more than happy to mark you in for an Italeri 1/35 Ostwind Diorama. It's good to have you here.

Hi Tony, I'll be watching the GB. If I can get my USS Johnston mailed to me from Boise I'll tackle that one again since I let the ball drop on it last time. I'll let you know it I can get it.

Ready to join!  Here's my first queen - 1/35 Dragon T-34/85

The last photo I have is this one from almost three yrs ago....

...but its actually closer to 95% assembled.  A few broken parts need to be fixed, finish installing the ice cleats, and then paint her up!

I'll post some new photos this weekend when I return from working out of state.

Gee Bish, we go back a long way, I remember that GB.

MC, I erally hope you can get it and join in here.

Ernest, I like the T-34 a lot, it will be good t osee you get that thing done !

I'm going to make a confession, I started messing with my T-33 last night. I filled the seams on both wing tip tanks. Thats about as much filling and sanding as on two 1/72 Spitfires !

Enjoy guys.

Taxtp,

I'm in, with a Fine Molds Type 4 Chi-To that I did not finish for Bish's 1946 GB.

Here is a couple picture of the progress:

And the assessories that will go with it:

Here is the box art:

I haven't worked on a model in about 6 months. Lately, Life has had a unique way of getting in the way, which took all the steam out of my sails. But, I think clear waters are ahead, so I'm looking forward to finishing this build with all who participate in this GB.

Thanks!

Here's my entry. It's a nice kit, don't know why it got shelved. (I really do, but hate to admit being a startaholic). This GB couldn't be better timed ... I'm intent on actually finishing some kits this year.

Tony,

I'm in. Put me down for Airfix's 1/72 Bf-110. I started it back in 2015/2016 when I did my 70th Anniversary of the Battle of Britain GB. Pretty much all that's left is to paint the underside blue, attach the gear and apply the decals. IF I get that one done, I'll probably move on to a 1/72 Airfix Hawk in the 100th FAA Commerative markings. That one was supposed to be for the Weekend GB in 2008. That's a loooooonnnnngggg weekend.

I've got 3.

1st Monogram 1/48 F-8 Crusader.  shelved it 5-6 years ago because I wanted to put Zuni rockets on it and couldn't afford them, now you can't find them so I'll revert to the twin sidewinder rails.

2nd is a Italeri 1/72 EF-111,  not sure why I shelved it but this GB gives me a good reason to finish it.

and 3rd  a very old Hasegawa Egg plane, a F-16.   I think I started it in 1996?  and I just found it yesterday in and old box in my shop.

Hey, I’m in.  Put me down for my Matchbox 1:72 scale BAe Hawk 200.  Originally released in 1989, I don’t even remember how long it’s been on my shelf, but a good guess would be at least 20 years - a real Shelf Queen!

A_A, you're in. I've got myself all enthusiastic about Hawks too. I'll be glad to see it as I love those old Matchbox kits.

Falconmod, seems you were in dire need of this GB. I'll be really happy if you can knock that lot off.

Buddy, I've just put your first entry in, let me know if you want to enter the 2nd or wait until you complete te first. Thats a kit in my stash, so I'll be keen to see it work out. Good luck with the canopy framing !

Stik, welcome aboard mate.

Mrmike, thats an interesting aircraft in a good scheme. I'll look forward to it.

Hogfanfs, I don't know much (anything) about Japanese armor. It will be good to see that thing take shape and at least teach me recognition.

I'm really glad of the strong interest, and we all know the world will be a better place with less shelf queens !

Cheers

Lot's of cool stuff coming back from the shelf of doom here. My project is from the shoebox of doom. Its a Tamiya M113. Hezbollah got a hold of a bunch of these from the stockpile the USA gave to the Lebonese Army, supposedly. For the record I have ZERO support for Hezbollah. I enjoy modeling ecclectic subjects is all.

I found something Tony.

A 1/72 Matchbox A-4 Mk-1 Comet.

I got it for free from one of the guys from the IPMS club in Boise before I moved to Dallas. I brought it with me because of the scale.

Griffin, maybe we'll call next year's GB the 'Shoebox of Doom'. I like it a lot haha. That is a very interesting subject choice, I didnt even know they had armor.

crown, you're on the roster with my all time favourite aircraft. What scheme are you planning ?

MC, I'm so glad you made it. I built that thing as a kid, as well as most of their other kits. I've always had a soft spot for the Comet. I'm actually considering going back and building my way through the Matchbox range. I literally can't wait to see it. I'll even give you an exception and let you start early !!! haha

LOL thanks Tony,

I would love to take you up on that but right now my workbench has been converted to a medication table for a few weeks. I'm thinking around mid Apr for many of the meds I'm taking right now will drop off and I should be able to convert the table back to a workbench.

It's driving me crazy to look at the kits and not be able to do anything about it at the moment.
