TankerEasy

Hey guys, just a little update, the GB will start November 1st and will run through May 1st of 2020, as stated previously this can be any fix winged aircraft...

Well darn, i guess my Revell 1/72 HH-3 jolly green giant will have to stay on the shelf of doomCrying

But, I'm still up for trying this GB.. although, my success rate at GB's is dismal.. they do motivate me to get some stuff done...

Not sure how I'll feel about it on Nov 1st, but  I am thinking a skyraider or F-100D/F... I'm sure I'll change my mind... love phantoms...

I'll be in. I have numerous 1/48: AT-37B, T-28A, OV-10, O-2, F-4D, A-1E, Pilatus Turbo Porter. Also have 1/72 AC-119, AC-130, and C-123. Don't know which will be done yet, but plenty to choose from.

I'd do that C-123!  I'm leaning towards doing an O-1 bird dog, figured that be an unusual build.

Also little reminder for everyone, We'll kick this off November 1st!  Again its any fixed wing aircraft flown during Vietnam from the period of 1965 through 1975, that means it doesnt have to be an American aircraft for those that want to build a Mig!  also its any scale from 1/144 through 1/32!

On the bench: 1:48 Academy F-4C Phantom II "Scat 27, Robin Olds' aircraft"

I would like to join this GB, but as I am moving to Europe it will be at least 4-6 months before I could start my build.

yes, keeping it fixed wing only, I understand it was heavily reliant on choppers, but there was still a huge role played by fixed wing aircraft Wink

Sorry but I need to change the plane I'll be building. Instead of the C-123K, I'll build the F-105F Combat Martin in 1/72.

Cheers,

Russ

When you said "any fixed wing aircraft" did you intend to rule out helicopters? I hope not, since Vietnam was a "chopper" war.

I'd like to be in with a Roden 1/72 C-123K that I'll modify into a ROCAF 34th Squadron "Black Bat" special operations bird, one of four that flew in Vietnam. Not sure I can finish it in only 6 months though.

Cheers,

Russ

Yeah, I might be able to do something, I have several jets that would work. Put me down for TBD and I'll see if I can get something done. The way I'm going though it'll be 10 years before I get to it.

BTW, I never care how many join my GB's. If one or two are intrested than it's a go. Usually a few more join as it goes on. My GB's are somewhat diffrent than most so I usually don't get very many participants anyway.

I wonder if Caracal will release their planned 1/48 F-111A sheet by the start date?  I would love to do a Combat Lancer bird.  I have the infamous Hobby Boss kit, but having the decals would be enough incentive to start it.

I'm interested as well. I'll have to check the stash to see what I have.

I'd be down for going Downtown. While I will probably stick to my preferred area of operations (1/72 fighters), the big multi-engine birds take up a lot of real estate for those of us with limited space, allowing 1/144 would open up some possibilities.

We did have an 80s GB here a few years back, but nothing similar for other decades that I remember...

”Vietnam era” significantly widens the eligibility. Are we talking from the advisor era thru the fall of Saigon, 1961 or so until 1975? Or just the Gulf of Tonkin until the 1973 US withdrawal?  And also would this be just for aircraft involved in the war, or worldwide? That longer timespan also incorporates the Arab/Israeli June 1967, War of Attrition, and October 1973 wars, Cuban Missile Crisis, countless other crisis hotspots, and the ongoing wars in Africa and Cold War.

You know I was just thinking that this could lead to other GBs like the 80s, 70s, 90s..etc.  One could build any subject from the 1980s for example.

Appreciate your probable inclusion of 1/32's.  Opens up a couple of ideas.

End of year works well...if I can remember, lol

As of now this will start probably in december time frame, 1/72, 1/48, and 1/32 are welcomed, and any aircraft, from any country used in Vietnam from 65 to 75.  As the year moves along we'll figure out an exact date to kick it off!  glad to see interest in it!

If it starts at the end of this year or at the first of next year, I'd be in with an OV-10 with my Uncle's tail number. Be a good way to force me to start it.

So are you taking about anything that exsisted during the US conflict or just aircraft that participated in the war?

If we started at the end of the year I would love to jump in. I have a few options in the stash, but I might just have to jump into that AC-47 I just picked up...

Yeah, it would have to be end of the year for me, I'm into too many GB's right now!  Also, I know this has been mentioned, but does it have to be of aircraft that were actually in the Vietnam conflict, or just ones that were active during that time frame (e.g., Arab-Israeli war aircraft)?

Ok folks, so it’s looking like it’s gonna have to wait until the end of this year if not the beginning of next year all together to really maximize participation.

If I can get at least 5 or so people that can commit sooner, being as I have several kits that would work I wouldn’t mind doing a small one to kill time until more people can commit to it.

As for the rules, Either 1/72 or 1/48 scale, and keep it to any aircraft, from any nationality used during the war from the time frame of 1965 to 75.  Maybe that’s a bit broad but I’d like to see a broad range of aircraft be built.

If 4 or 5 folks wanna do one sooner, I’d be willing to do it!  Just let me know, if not it’ll just wait until we get farther into the year to see when people can commit to it!

I would also be interested later in the year. And may I suggest it be narrowed to aircraft in the SEA theater and era. Since these were transition times, there will be a great deal of variety. I too have an Academy F-4C/D, but also a Roden T-28A, AT-37B, A-1E Sky Raider, O-2A Skymaster, OV-10A Bronco, C-123B Provider, AC-119K Stinger, Pilatus PC-6C Turbo Porter, AC-130H Spectre. And I have an O-1G Bird Dog and Bell UH-1F almost completed on the bench. I would probably like to do a few that aren't being done by a lot of other modelers. Keep us posted.
