Always a pleasure having you with us Digger. Keep popping in to see what the rest of us are up to (the wife has planned out the weekend, so the Centaur won't be finished until next week - such is life..

PS, chalk and white paint.........sounds just like the real thing alright! Very effective results for sure.

Another two weeks gone by, here we are again.

I've mentioned making decisions based on the info available and what my concept of the project was. One of those decisions was the rear bed of the portee -- it could be a single-piece/level or a two-piece/level affair. I selected the latter because it seemed closer to my vision and also because I figured I'd need the fudge factor offered by the raised deck when fitting the 2-pounder legs and was I ever right !!!

One of the difficulties with a project such as this is the precise mating of parts from disparate kits. The TA & IT vehicles weren't bad; they are close enough to fit with little effort. And while I try very hard to build things to the proper scale size, I am not working with exact drawings, but rather pictures from which I have to interpret size & shape. Sometimes, now matter how I try, the kit parts won't match so "adjustments" have to be made -- this is the fun & the pain of this type work.

The first place I ran into problems was making the rails, trolley & chocks for the gun carriage (see prev post). When all was said & done, the chocks became "representative". Another thing that took a great deal of time & effort was getting all those pieces in place such that the rear trails of the carriage were not too high.

Why, all this talk & no pictures ??? Read on, it is a good intro to this post.

But first a word from the cab & frame. I was not happy with my doors, neither the scratch-built ones or the openings on the cab -- part of the problem was that the floorboard was flush with the door post & they just didn't sit / cover right. So I reworked the cab side with some 10-thou strip to build up a proper ledge and rebuilt the doors to fit snugly. I had to reposition the fuel tanks because they were too far back (like 1/32" or so) and getting in the way of the soon to be built storage boxes. I built steps for both sides from some kit rails, Evergreen, & spare P/E. At the very rear of the chassis you'll see two triangular pieces that will hold the 2-pdr wheels.

So, now the frame is coming along. I need storage boxes on each side just aft of the fuel tanks, and I need fuel-can carriers aft of them. Other than that, I need to do whatever wiring & detailing in/under the frame itself ... and oh, yes, the battery & still have the spare tire carrier to finish. I can start the cab clean-up & final detailing as I've got my fit issues resolved.

Now we can move on to the rear deck. With the rear part, trolley, etc done, it is time to move on to the raised piece. The trails of the 2-pounder partially fold and end up sliding under the combination ammo box and seat.

I started with the ammo box -- there were two styles, top-load & front load -- and I chose the latter. One of my problems was the size of the ammo box vs the size of 2-pdr containers. Lacking exact dimensions and any shot of the inside of the ammo box, I decided to make one that seemed the correct size/proportion and to not get hung up over exact storage -- loose rounds & whatnot would work. So what you see is the ammo box, with seat. I still have to do the fold-down door. It is made of thin ply and anlge "iron" with holes drilled to take .032 wire as a pseudo-nail. I may not have mentioned it before but I usually build up wood parts & then coat with MinWax clear poly-eurathane; that allows me to "preserve" the wood thru the build.

The 2-pdr carriage was something else. The kit comes with rear leg pieces that can be positioned as desired & glued down. I needed more flexibility to fit this into my mount, so I spent time carefully drilling holes thru the leg mount and pin, then running a piece of wire thru to hinge them. This is something I wish I had done with my first 2-pdr. I had to rebuild the pieces several times because the resin wasn't strong enough to hold the wires & motion.

And here is the first fit of the carriage onto the rear decks with legs folded.

Now I can work the seat handles, ammo door & hinges, and the mount for the seat, to include the winch bearings and handle. I also need a couple small brackets to hold the folded legs. A bit more work on the clamp for the front leg & things will be moving quite nicely. But there is so much to do before I can start painting & joining the bigger pieces, not to mention getting to work on the rest of the gun.

Anyway, here it all is, with the ammo box & seat kinda propped into place.

I am having FUN !!!!!!!!!

Bow [bow]Bow [bow]Bow [bow] That is one sweet build there John. Looks fantastic.

There is a lot of work going on there that really needs to be explained alright. Read it a couple of times to take it all in. It will be a shame to paint it all at the end, but I'm sure that will only improve it anyway.

Careful with the "Wow's: guys, I've got a couple problems -- back to decisions & in this case I made the wrong one. Way back when I was hacking the Tamiya cab I left the "frame rails" on figuring it wouldn't look too bad sitting up on the Italeri frame.

Well, now it sits about 1/8 too high off the frame & that makes the vertical position of the fuel tanks vs the steps vs the fenders wrong. It is pretty obvious from a side view.

I do not want to try & fix this properly -- I'll probably break too many things. I shall make one attempt at kludging things & see if I can live with it. I took the fuel tanks & steps off again and after careful study, think I can take off about 1/16"-5/64" from the cab frames, fiddle with some other stuff, and maybe get away with it.

Quick update. I added the skirt supports and cleaned up some leftover bits for the lower hull of the Centurion. Everything is broken down into subassemblies with the wheels still left on the sprue for ease of painting. No time this weekend, but sometime next week I'll be looking at finally throwing some paint on the kit.

Okay, Centaur pics finally. After taking these shots I noticed a couple of things that need touching up, which I will do shortly. Quick Re-cap:
Tamiya 1/35th scale Centaur CS Mk IV
Fenders and skirts all scratchbuilt from brass and styrene.
Added details also from brass and styrene.
Engine grill from brass mesh stock
Kit Tracks, decals and figures.
Painted in Revell enamels, gloss base of Future for the decals, then Dull coat to seal. Artist oil and white spirit wash then dry brushed with a mix of Revell and Humbrol Enamels and final light dust with pastels.

Figures painted with base coat of Tamiya Dark Yellow followed by artists oils for flesh and Vallejo acrylics for uniforms.

Let me know if you see something I missed.

It's winter on the Outer Banks, the tourists are gone; it is peaceful & quiet.
In South Nags Head where I live, there are few if any neighbors, except maybe these folks ...

Your Centaur looks excellent Petbat. Its given me extra motivation to get my Matilda finished, been tossing up what scheme to finish it in and have finally decided to go with the 3 colour Caunter scheme. I am also using this model as a trial for using Vallejo acrylics on armour models, if it works out I may convert to Vallejo acrylics for all my modelling interests.
Wayne I enjoy getting older, especially when I consider the alternative.

I think I have a problem -- I just realized the end date for this is 31 Dec !!!! Somehow I thought it was end of January -- I'm way behind !!!!!.

Anyway, if you remember my last post (30 Nov) where I figured out the cab sat too high, well I decided to fix it and that has occupied my modelling week. Of course, just fixing one thing just wishful thinking. I fixed the cab height but that made the fenders & wheels look wrong, so I had to also move the cab about 1/16" forward & that meant redoing the engine mounts and radiator. The steps, fuel tanks, and spare tire carrier had to come off & that meant frame repairs. Then I noted the cab didn't sit quite right on the frame so I had to kludge in some fill parts to make it all look better.

One other result of moving the cab forward is I now have a gap in the rear beds -- this is a good thing as I need a bit more space on the middle deck to de-conflict the gun legs & the winch handle. But I think I'll just fill the gap with something simple & not rebuild the decks themselves -- I think I can make the fill look like part of the chock assembly.

Anyway, bulk of hack & whack work is done, now I can start to put things back together. And start on the storage boxes & fuel-can holders. I better get the cab washed down & primed, at least underneath so I can get it cleaned up.

I have also been working on the ammo box, bending brass for the seat railing & etc.

None of which solves my biggest problem -- the end date for this is 31 Dec !!!! I'm way behind !!!!!.

I do not know how some of you can turn out such GREAT work in what (to me) is a short time !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

John don't worry about the end date. This is the first GB I've been in and finished on time (seeing as I kinda started it, I thought I better set an example). Even money, you won't be alone on the unfinished side of the table when New Years Eve blows by.

Just have fun and take note of my new sig quote.

Julian. Will be bringing it for the February Comp, as I will probably be in Wollongong for the January meeting (it's the 2nd Saturday 'cause of new years eve hangovers). More rain expected tomorrow sorry. Hope to see the pics of the Matilda soon.

By the way, forgot to compliment you on the Wirblewind (and the wingy thingies) you brought in on Saturday. Very nicely done indeed.

John, that is some outstanding work!
Peter, the Centaur looks great. And thanks for posting how you built the base. It's a great little tutorial.
Here are a couple of updated pics of my Churchill. It's been basecoated with Tamiya Dark Green, Futured, decaled and flat coated with Polly Scale Flat. The other pic is of one of the tracks. It's been basecoated with Tamiya gunmetal, and washed with artist oil burnt sienna. To me, the tracks look more like copper than rust. I'm hoping dry-brushing with gunmetal and then rubbing in some graphite will tone it down . Otherwise I'll have to start over. Sorry about the poor quality of the pics. I'm having a hard time taking decent pics indoors. They never seem to turn out well.

hiya, folks !
i actually did a bit more work on my revell 1/72 chally,
added a bunch of details 2 the stern...
this is really one of the finest 1/72 kits i've built so far,
incredilble detail... i will probably not add anything scratchbuilt
because it would look crude in comparison 2 the kit itself !
well, maybe some tarps 4 the baskets, they r the weakest part of the kit...
i'm just about at the point where i could use some ref pix of GW1 vehicles,
the kit only provides for KFOR/SFOR type markings but i would like 2 do a
Granby version .
i am really hoping 2 make the deadline 4 this build...

Erica, does your kit have the add on armour or not? There were some subtle differences tank to tank, even in the same units, some with different Jerrycan racks, etc. Unfortunately I have no pics where you can see a vehicle from all sides, and only a couple of Uparmoured ones where you can see side and rear.

Here is a couple, if you want more email me. These are colour shots, but I have a few B&W as well.

This is Churchill the 7th Armoured Division's, Queens Royal Irish Hussars' Commanding Officer's vehicle; the vehicle the Bovington Chally on Tanxheaven has been painted as. This is the pre-war (ie Desert Shield time frame) scheme, Churchill got up-armoured later. If you refer to the www.tanxheaven.com site you can get the right markings:

You could leave off the "B" and change the name to ARKLOW for another QRIH tank.

This is the up armoured 'Hades' (you can just make out the name on the first rectangular armour plate), unfortunately that is all I have for that one.
