AIRCRAFT - 'It Floats and Flies Group Build' - Feb 1st 2005 to Sept 30 (Gotta finish sometime!)
Posted by Aurora-7 on Sunday, October 24, 2004 12:28 PM
Welcome to the IFFGB. The sole purpose of this group build is to supply motivation to modelers in the building of a model(s) of any aircraft that can land in and take off from water. The subject can be anything from a Boeing China Clipper to a little Huey 300c with pontoons. Any scale and any building medium.

We plan to start on February 1st 2005 and end by May 1st. Get your Christmas/Channukah/Kwanza gift requests in now!

This NOT a contest so the start and stop dates are only to help us focus on our objective (many of us have several here). If you run after the stated end date, please still post images of your finished work.

Here is our tag:

I'll maintain a list here of forum members and their projects.

First I was in, and then I was out, (remind you of any body?) now I think I’m going to get back in. I just know I can work on two projects at the same time even if one is a Vacuform kit.

Just don’t know what I want to build. The Revell Germany Bv. 222 (on sale), the HK-1 “Spruce Goose” (impressive aircraft once you’ve seen it up close) or the 1/48 scale Tamiya Aichi M6A1 Seiran with Eduard PE I have in the closet. Any help, what should I build?

I say the 'Spruce Goose' -The Mother of All Flying Boats.

My second choice would be the Bv-122. I was trying to decide between that and the H6K5 'Mavis' to build.

Ouch, I am in the process of finishing the Savoia S21 Seaplane, will be done way prior to the Start Date. Got too many other candidates waiting for attention to attack another plane kit for a few months.

As for the choice " Spruce Goose" all the way.

I posted this up in the airplane forum, before I saw the formal thread down here.

Feb - 1 May is OK, but tight, how about 31 May at least for fudge factor ?

Including float planes is also OK;I have the Kingfisher & Cutting Edge A/M & a lot of photos from NASM-Dulles, so that gives me a 3rd option.

Pls change my project from 1/72 Sunderland (don't think I can do in 90days) to the Felixstowe as it will be pretty much OOB, except for some added P/E detail & maybe add a gunner station to the wing. I haven't done my homework on markings vs modifications yet, so something will probably change between now & then.

Cool! I've got a unique build!

Was actually gonna wait on building this one since I've gotta purchase the 1/48 Tamiya F4F Wildcat kit for the RHVP "Wild Catfish" conversion kit, but I imagine Hobby Lobby will run one of their 50% off sales between now and February 1st.

Aurora-7 - FYI - It'll be 1/48 scale. That's the only scale I build at.

Taking a look at the Sword 1/72 Sikorsky S-43 kit to get a feel for what it will take to finish. My references on this AC are nil, so does anyone have a reference site that might include some helpful pics? My first question is on the internal color. The kit instructions call out Interior Green, which is plausable, but I'd like to confirm that before I start the build in Feb.

Rick,

While the internet seems to have a great deal of links to external images of the S-43, internal images are going to be hard to come by. I suggest you try to get to the source of 3 existing aircraft.

One is at the Garber facility of the Air and Space Museum. Try contacing the Garber facility to see if someone can help you.

Another is at the Pima Air and Space Museum in Tuscon Arizona.

And finally there is a flying example that was originally owned by Howard Hughs and served as a developmental aid in the 'Spruce Goose'. There are lots of images of this aircraft on the net. I'm not sure who the owner of it is now but I'm sure a little digging will reveal that. Here is one link to in flight images of that aircraft.

http://www.seawings.co.uk/sik43gal.htm

I also found this link to the Sikorsky Historical Archives: http://www.sikorskyarchives.com/index.html

I live in Connecticut, not far from where the S-43s were originally made. There is a National Helicopter museum here and it's manned by a lot of ex-Sikorsky people. I'll try to get over there some time and try to get some names of contacts that might now something about the S-43s.

Don’t forget to add me to the list. I will be building Minicraft’s 1/200 scale Hughes H-4, HK-1 Hercules flying boat. I know, it a small 1/200 scale kit which only gives the model a wingspan of…19 inches.

I think the biggest challenge on the kit will be to make the overall gray finish look interesting. I may have to go sit under its wing for a couple hours for inspiration.

Mahoney,

Your welcome. To get the tag in your signature, take this link below

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v70/Aurora-7/iffgb.jpg

and paste it in the signature window of your profile maintenance screen. When you do, add the following:

in front of the link, put 'img' (without the quotes) and have it enclosed with '[' and ']' (also with no quotes).

At the end of the link add '/img' , also enlosed with '[' and ']'.

This defines the image to display instead of just a link.

Allright my firt Group Build. I will be building the Mach 2 PBM-5 Mariner. I've had this kit for a couple years and needed an excuse to actually build it. I'm hoping this will be my best build as I will be building it based on the plane my grandfather was in during the war.

Oh, Mike are you in luck. Here's a link to an on-lin article at Armorama.com that deals with the Airfix Sunderland and a newly released PE set for it:

No problems other than the kit & moulds are about 40 years old -- check the date inside the wing halves !!! THICK plastic, crude detail. The raised rivets/lines are semi-correct, so don't go knocking them down too much. No interior details for cockpit & turrets. But not a bad kit for what it is.

You can get any/all of the WEM P/E sets (mentioned above) that just came out, but much of the cockpit/interior isn't really visible -- and I think they should have focused on also doing the crew quarters, galley, & someo f the lower areas, but that's just me. You can skip the weapons bay details if you aren't gonna show it open and you can skip the Yagi antennas if not doing an a/c with 'em. Check the link previously given to see what you really want to do. I will say the P/E sets are beautiful !!!

You can get replacement Peggies from Engines & Things -- the kit ones are really bad. You'll have to work at digging the kit engines out & fixing up the cowl, but even without extra detail, the Peggies will help the kit.

You can get vacu-form canopies/turrets from Squadron. They aren't great but are better than the thick kit ones.

You can, I believe, get replacement exhausts from two different sources but I don't remember who.

You probably can get replacement props, I can't remember the source I've used for other a/c.

You can help detail the turrets by getting 1/72 WW1 guns from Tom's Modelworks & use the "1919 Vickers".

I have all the above other than the exhausts & am trying to find space on my workbench for this -- it was my 1st thought for the build, but in 90 days, I don't think I'd finish it.

A "google" will turn up some good references.

As to a reference, there are two I know of: Warpaint Series #25 and Osprey's Sunderland Squadrons of WW2. I recommend the former if you want to tweak your kit a bit; the latter is interesting but not necessary if you have a good idea of what color/markings you will use.

I am getting my PBY-5A reatdy for the GB. I am ordering resin wheels for it and possibly a new cockpit. I do have the PBY in Action book which shows all of the wire antenna placements. I also have the True Details canopy masking kit. I will be doing the Black Cat version. Weathering the black paint will be fun! Do any of you remember the old Revell kit of Cousteu's (sp) PBY??? I loved that kit! Of course there was his ship kit too. All collectors' items now.

OK...I'm ready now... Well sorta... gotta finish the B-25Js first. And I guess I gotta wait for Feb. 1st too.Tongue [:P]

Stopped by Hobby Lobby today to get the Tamiya F4F-4 kit for 50% off. Second time I will have built this kit, but this time its getting converted to an F4F-3S Wildcatfish using a resin conversion kit costing nearly 4X as much as the base kit.[:0] Since when did I have a disposeable income? I must really like this hobby.
