Hi Aurora
No - not taking myself out of the build, just going to take the plane out of the water...
Spent a lot of money with squadron today, details for the plane, paint, etc.
Is there a penalty for starting early?

Penalty! Laugh [(-D]

What am I going to do? Take away points?

The start and stop dates are really to help people develope a schedule in case they are involved with other builds. So, yukonrob, if you can't restrain yourself, it's OK with me if you start early.

Starting early should be penalized by one warped fuselage half Smile [:)]. Starting early usually isn't a problem for me.

Starting early???? I think I am erring more towards Rob - its timetabled for 1 Feb - so everything else has to finish before then!!

By the way, can you confirm me as the RNZAF Cat?? Thanks to Rob, I have the Aeromaster decals, and have selected my "boat" Smile [:)] - Thanks again Rob!!

By the way, through my own stupidity, I missed an eBay auction of that Aeromaster Special Pack today - I am surprised you Americans didn't hear my cursing from there!!

Well, it's Rick, not Rob, but I was glad to help out. Looking forward to the RNZAF Cat.

I can't start early in any regards, at least until the UPS man comes. And besides, there is a P-47 in the way, and (gasp) a panzer too. (both in various stages of incompletness)
BTW - a couple of group build newbie questions:
1) when is it legit to display the badge
B) how do I do so
Thanks

Blush [:I] ... Ooops ... sorry RICK!! ... what a Blue [:S]

SWMBO is kindly pointing out a lack of space to store models the size of the Cat ... but since when has a minor detail such as "space" every got in the way of good modelling??? Just wait till I add the B17, He111 and Ju88 (both A and C models) to the shelves Tongue [:P]

Okay cancel my P-Boat. It's in a box that went AWOL during my recent moveSad [:(]. However I do still have the Kingfisher. I'll be ready to start it on the first.

Roadkill,

Is that the Monogram Kingfisher? That kit intrigues me, so I wait to see how it goes together for you.

AND!!! Just 8 days before we float off Wink [;)]

G'day frosty its a vac-u-foam canopy molded as one piece you need to cut out the section , as I have never used one before so I can't tell what its like to use . I know that you need to be careful cutting it out . I've heard that if you put blue-tac behind it for support and too hold it in positon it makes it alot easier.

Heres a pic of it hope this helps..

cheers mike

Paul::::: Yes it's the monogram kit. It's not a bad little kit. Has the option of wheeled and float and comes with the option of a RN version.

Just a bump to keep the build in mind. 7 days until launch. Working on the BOB build and finishing my natural metal K-44 has got me in the mood to build something bigger!

Started taking a closer look at the Sword 1/72 Sikorsky S-43 kit & it looks pretty good. I haven't started building it yet, but some dry fitting reveals there may be a problem with the fit of the windscreen. It appears to be too shallow, with a definite step likely with the mating fuselage. Has anyone built this kit that could confirm or alleviate my initial concern ?

Rick,

It'll be a choice of filing away fuselage or canopy. Depend with looks like it would be a better representation -less fuselage or less glass. How does it compare to images of real S-43s?

Aah, the "Float and Flies" people, just the guys (and gals) I was looking for... maybe one of you could tell me if Mach2 is the only manufaterer that makes a PBM Mariner ?
Mach2 is hard to find over here, so I was wondering if some of the "regular" manufecterors is producing such a bird as well.

Thank You

Just dry fitting, it appears that the windscreen fits the nose OK, but it's about .020 or so too shallow to blend with the top of the fuselage deck, creating a step. That's too much to file off the top of the fuselage without disrupting the contour of the aircraft. I hate it when clear parts don't fit, as they are a pain to modify without destroying them. Especially when the're too small, it's tough to make them larger.

DanCooper: Revell also makes a PBM but it is in 1/112 The model does no justice to the Mariner. The Mach 2 one is the only real choice unless you can dish out the cash for a Pend Oreille PBM in 1/48. This is my favorite aircraft mainly because my grandfather was a nose gunner on one from '44-'46.

I'm working on the Mach 2 kit now for this build and let me tell you it is looking like a real challenge. The plastic is soo thick it's unbelieveable. I just ordered some Aeroclub props for it because the kit props are a joke. I also wish there was an aftermarket company for all of the clear pieces. These are also way too thick but I guess you take what you get and do the best you can.

Oh, I thought the windscreen was too big! How about adding a shims to add to the fuselage portion?

rrmelend,
I would like a Mariner kit ,too but the Mach 2 kit is too much money (for me) for a 1/72 scale kit. Someday someone will mass produce a PBM in 1/72 but I can't believe it hasn't happened yet!

I suppose a shim is the way to go, although that will cause a step at the windscreen to fuselage nose join Banged Head [banghead]. Ah the joys of limited run kits.

I'm actually hoping someone will produce an affordable on in 1/48 as this is usually the only scale I work in. I'm still trying to figure out how to put this kit in water at a simi-reasonable price. When I am done I'm hoping on giving this model to my grandfather to display with all his other Mariner memorablilia.
