AUTO - Rally Cars

i think i will be in, however, i do not know what i will be building, neither do i know when i will start.
balancing ultimate frisbee, softball, modelling and a moderately normal social life is not easy.
but im definitely in

*Phew*... I have not built a WRC car in ages, since they started producing almost just 206's of late! But I will try and join you guys on this one. Like with Reggie, I'll have to juggle a few things - most importantly moving house at the end of Nov, which means no building till most likely mid Dec for me...

Maybe that will give somebody time to bring out some 03 or 04 Focus decals so I can mod the 02 one I have in stock.

Seebee, I do a bit of hunting on eBay where I have found a lot more than the 206. I have quite a few kits from Tamiya, Hasegawa, ESCI, Gunze Sanyo, Heller, and Protar.

I'm in no hurry about this build subject and I am happy to have found some folks with the same interest.

Well, maybe there isn't the interest in rally cars as I thought. I don't want to over extend anybody. If there isn't anymore interest then I think I will pull the plug. Thanks to those that responded.

chris, on the contrary, i do believe that there is interest, its just that car builders dont frequent the GB page much. i have put up a thread on the auto forum to direct people here.

Count me in. I just finished my race car for the race car group build. I've never built a WRC car before so this should be fun. I'm not sure which one I'm going to do. I'll head out to the LHS this weekend to do some shopping.

No I've been away much of the week so didn't see this until this evening.

I'm definately in but won't be able to start until late December because I'm involved in 3 other GB's at present. Perhaps the finish date could be February or March?

I'll probably do the Haseqawa Stratos in Marlboro colours from 1974 and maybe a 43rd something as well.

Chris, I agree. Don't despair, there will be joiners! Quite a few of us are busy or have just finished on the race car GB, where there was quite a few rally cars, so the interest is there. And the best fun of it is for somebody like darenbb, who is now going to get exposure to something he might never have done before!

Don't worry if it's slow going initially. Esp once this gets going, a few more might join.

Ok, I think I've narrowed down my selection to this kit... Tamiya's 2002 206, what a sweet looking car. I'm off to the not so local hobby shop (55 mile trip) tomorrow to get me a kit. It just so happens I have a $100 gift certificate too...yeehaa!

I went on the WRC website today and started learning about the series, very cool stuff so far. I've watched some of the races on speedchannel but never knew the rules. Now I'm starting to learn some of the basics.

Does any one know of any good sources for aftermarket stuff for the cars?

Darren there is a heap of aftermarket stuff out there. Go to www.hlj.com or www.rainbowten.co.jp Companies like Studio 27, Renaissance, Scale Motorsports, Acu-Stion all produce p/e detail sets and different decal sets

Thanks for the heads up nicholma, I totaly forgot about SMS. I've even bought several items from them in the past...duh . I will be ordering their PE detail set and templated CF decal sheets for my 206.

I made my 110 mile round trip journey today, despite the RedSox rally today, and was able to get the exact kit I was looking for. Here it is in all it's glory.



What an awesome kit! It will be a nice change of pace after building up Revells #38 Nascar kit. Every time I open a Tamiya kit I am imediately reminded why I build them almost exclusively...nothing else compares IMHO. This kit has decals for 3 different cars, 2 figures with 3 sets of arms for the driver. It allows you to pose the steering wheel left , right or straight to match the steerable front wheels (very nice touch!). It also gives you a choice of 2 different sets of wheels (5 or 15 spoke). Of course it has a nice set of tire decals along with with the excellent sponsor decals. Sorry, I'm not trying to give a review of this kit...i'm just excited.

It drives me nuts when people complain about Tamiya kits. People act as if these things put themselves together which is far from the truth. Taking a bad kit and making it look good is not fun for me, it just takes time away from building. Tamiya is doing it right...everyone else needs to catch up...anyhoo.

I think i'm going to mount this on a base that has a dirt road with a nice hill. I'm thinking the car will be cresting the top with the front wheels just off the surface as it launches itself in the air. I'll have too "dust" off my weathering skills (pun intended) to dirty it up a bit.

darren, i could not agree with you more on your stand on tamiya kits. as i type this i have a tamiya RC kit getting built, and ive already done 2 goofs, and thats *with* their usual high-quality instructions. i shudder to think what i would do if i was building a kit with non-reggie proof instructions ! anyway, i am presently kinda caught up with alot of projects, so the finances for a new kit wont come before next year. thats soon enough for me !

Has this GB fallen apart due to lack of interest? If anyone other than myself is planning on participating please say so. Otherwise I will move on with my own thread in the auto section.

Yep I'm definately in Darren but can't start until around Christmas because of the number of kits on the go already.

If starting day could be around x-mas, then I think you can count me in as well. The type of car will be either a Subaru Impreza, a Toyota Corolla (I drive one of those myself) or a Ford Focus.
I'll check out tomorrow of my usual hobbyshop has one of those in stock.

if its a christmas start date, i im in, assuming i get other projects done.

Me too, also will be in, but only only starting in Dec - after unpacking, etc...

Chris if you're looking for some detail photos go to www.carclassic.com click on their race cars button then rally cars or on Lancia at the home screen. You will find a number of 037's available for purchase (why get the model when you too could have the real thing at argueably a reasonable price!!) and each has a range of photos showing extensive interior, engine, suspension and exterior detail. For anyone building some of the older rally cars this site can yield an amazing amount of detail photos.

Cool! I'm glad to hear that I'm not going to be the only one participating. It does look like I'll be getting a jump on the rest of you though.

So far I've got the body and chasis painted gloss aluminum. I've also got the body decaled and ready for clear coat. I'll set this aside and begin assembling the chasis this weekend.

I'll post a pic sometime this weekend.

What an excellent website! Just brilliant! I have added it to my favorites. Being from NZ I am assuming you have seen the actual cars racing.

As for a time line for this build I could change the time to start with the 2005 WRC season which starts Jan 21 through Nov 13 2005 if that works? Since I found these forums I know how easy it is to over commit. Just an idea. Also are there any talented folks with ideas on a badge for this build? I look forward to a great GB and Darren's 206.

Yes Chris I did see them a couple of times, along with the Quattros etc. Great machines, loud fast and spectacular. I even competed against a Stratos once (shows how old I am!!) and we were beating him comfortably in most stages but the one stage he started the car immediately ahead of us he was late and missed his start so the one chance for us pass a Stratos was gone

id probably build a tamiya toyota corolla wrc coz ive had my eye on it for quite a while....

Welcome! Read the first post for details. The Tamiya WRC Corolla is a good kit and I would love to see it.

Tominator, if you're going to do the WRC Corolla check out the articles in Scale Model Internatinal April 1999 (a bit ho humm) and TMMI Aug/Sept 1999 (good). Both still available on back order I think. I was doing this model for the Racing Car GB and then discovered the TMMI article and decided to stop and duplicate their build. I've got the Haseqawa Safari kit which is nice but not quiet as good as the Tamiya I think.

No need to buy a Lancia 037 kit. Read my first post to this group build. I'm going to change the requirement to rally cars instead of WRC rally cars. This GB is meant to be fun and interesting, not a financial burden. As for what is a GB? GB's are: "A portal to all the current group build projects--members getting together to build specific subjects, share their experiences, and help each other." I look forward to your inputs.
