Duke Maddog: Thanks for the advice about weathering. Adam uses a mat varnish I get for him at Art supply stores. (I coat my paintings and drawings, and suggested this to him a while ago)
So, I think that I will start using spray on varnish to get this sealed effect, and then weather myself happily away...

I would like to get an airbrush. Great for doing your nails !

Stuka: I am working on a badge for you. Will give you an address to view shortly.

Sounds good Kaz. Good luck in getting an airbrush. Some good ones can be gotten for great prices. I have a Badger 150 Double Action, and a cheap single action that I use occasionally. For best prospects do stop into the Airbrush and Painting Forum and look for threads describing airbrushes. You may find something better in those. They are very informative.

Duke Maddog: Thanks for the advice.
Me thinks me talk the boyfriend into us buying a airbrush.

Just as a curio comment, I used to have my acrylic nails airbrushed, and the mail artists used glass cleaner to remove the paints. Just wondering if the same applies to figures/models.

Stuka: my email is kazandraaz@yahoo.com. I would like to know if you like the badge, and if you would like me to send it to you as a file. If so, email me your address.

Hows all the builds coming? I still have that last touch up paint job to do on the DR I, and then I think I might weather and *improve*.

Kaz, the only time I use glass cleaner to clean my airbrush is whenever I clean after spraying Future. The ammonia breaks down the Future making my AB squeaky clean. If you're using paints on your models which are affected by ammonia, then glass cleaner is a good cleaning agent. However, if you're using enamels, the best cleaning agent is a turpentine/brush cleaner, or paint thinner.

Whew! I'm back from a 6 day training camp out in the scrub! Was trying, but I got through it! Now, I'm back! Woohoo!
As you may have guessed, the fact that I was in the scrub means that my Hornet hasn't progressed any. However, everyone else's have! Great job all!
Cheers,
John

Welcome back John. You've earned a few hours at the workbench. Go get some progress done my friend!

Everything's been moving along quite nicely so far. Looking forward to seeing you catch up.

I have my F-16 D mostly assembled, and attempting my very first try at pre-shading. I think that i should have used a larger scale to begin with, but oh well, i love how convenient 1/72 is overall!!! I'll try to post some update pics as soon as possible since this weekend is looking pretty tied up. I also recieved my Hasegawa kits - the F/A-18F and F-14B, and am in awe of them! I havent done anything more than just drool over them so far but cannot wait to dive right in to them!!

Quidquid latine dictum sit, altum videtur!!! - Anything said in Latin sounds profound!

I've decided I'm actually going to use the high-vis cobra heads on the Hornet. The low-vis ones just aren't visible (well that stands to reason, doesn't it? Tongue [:P] ). Stand by.
Cheers,
John

Frostygirl: thanks for the info regarding Airfix. I am not totally put-off by the kits, yet, and will start another couple of Airfix kits soon, but they will be different models.
Also, thankyou for the links to your pics. I do not know why I cannot see your pics in threads, or not see the DVII.

Kazandra (Kaz)

Kaz:
rib tape was applied on some wwi a/c 2 reinforce the fabric over the ribs.
on the modeling side, rib tape decals r often used 2 replace sanded off
rib detail w/ a more subtle effect... they r also used just like on the real a/c,
as seen on the lower wing of my Dvii (the thin blue stripes).

have u been able u see the Dvii yet ? not sure why u can't see those pix...
Airfix kits r okay, but the newer Academy kits r much better than that Camel...
& ur work doesn't look slapped together 2 me !

FrostyGirl: Thanks for the kind words :)
On the album page you advised for the D VII, I only see boxes, no pictures, no matter how long I wait.

I do spend a lot of time in pre-assembly. Clean peices, wash peices, paint, etc.etc.
I keep reminding myself that it is my boyfriend that is the Modeller, and I am his apprentice. (But there is no way in the world I am going to start making tanks and guns for him!)

I still have not got back to my DR I, but hope to this afternoon or tomorrow morning (before a barbeque), with 'the boy'.

OK I finally got onto putting some decals on. Not all of them are on yet, but most of the major decals are there. In these 2 pics, you can see basically what the livery is. At the front, you can see the high-vis 'cobra head' and behind it, the RAAF roundel, a blue circle with a red kangaroo inside it. In the second pic, you can see the Southern Cross emblazened on the vertical fin, with the tri-colour ID flag next to it. Down near the bottom, you can see the a/c's ID number- A21-8.

Hope you like 'em.
Cheers,
John

Excellent build John ! The Cobra head is very cool...

Me too loves the decals. I'll have to think about some more Australian planes for the future. I have one Walrus (Shagbat).

Stuka: Are you interested in the badge I built? If not I will remove it from my host.

I wonder how we are all doing with our constructions? So far all pictures I have seen posted have been most impressive. I really had no idea of just how fine an art modelling was.

I suppose I am now a convert. Acrylic paints to replace nail varnishes! LOL

Thanks gentlemen for the links for those decals. When I've got the cash, I'll be ordering. I appreciate it.

Kaz, you're coming along fine. I can't wait to see what you've got built so far. Keep up the great work.

Looking great John. By the way I am extending the deadline for this build so that I stand a chance to get something done. New end date is the end of the year (31/12/2005), so feel free to build as many kits as you want. Hopefully I will be able to get 3 birds in. The A6 Intruder which I have just completed the cockpit on, an F16 'Top Gun' and also an Su35. This extension is purely selfish reasons as I have just had another bike 'moment' at the weekend and have damaged my knee and maybe fractured my wrist. Damned machines! Anyway this will allow many of you who are doing so well to start more kits!! Hope none of you mind!

Thanks all,

Dan

Sorry to hear about your 'bike moment' Dan. At least this'll give you more modelling time!! Big Smile [:D]
I'm now wading into the HUGE job of applying all the tiny little warning stencils on the Hornet!! I had no idea there were so many!! Anyway, I've finished the top part, so I'm now working on the sides. Not much use posting pics though, because most of them are too small to be shown by my little camera.
Cheers,
John

Thanks John. The doc's said that I need to rest for about 2 months (I'm sure he meant 2 weeks though!!).

Good luck with your decal applying, can be a laborious job a times but well worth the effort!

Thats handy for me as I'm ladened down with several other group builds at the moment!
I finished spraying my D-Day stripes yesterday and they turned out even better than I expected so I sprayed a clear gloss to protect them abd I 'm now masking it all of to start with the colour coats and camo! I'll post a progress pic soon!

Dan: Yippee!!! I am running around the room like a child on Christmas morning.

Duke: Thanks again for the kind words. As my boyfriend would tell you, I am trying !?!

Since there is provision to build more than one model for this group build now, I will link some pics of the aircraft I have built since the DR I.

SPAD XIII

I have an Albatros DV/Va to build next, and am having a terrible time trying to get the right colours from the LHS.
Come On {LHS}, we still build WWI models, and need the paints stocked!
I wish to build Richthofven's Albatros, but if I continue having my current nightmares with paint supply, I may change my scheme.

Whats next? Well, I have a nice *little* collection of some of the important biplanes of the past, and would like to continue building WWI and pre/post WWI biplanes.
Any suggestions?

Thanks all and 'push on' with those *fantastic* attack aircraft you are all building.

Kaz :)

Well Kaz, here is one idea:

I also have another little Polikarpov and an Ilyushin biplane I need to shoot pics of as well. While I'm at it, I may as well get the pics of my Italian Cr34 Falco too!

I'll post them when I get them taken.

Stuka:

I have just completed construction and paint of an Academy Sopwith Camel. I need to do HEAPS of touch ups. I also erred with the placement of decals. (Hence my lack of pictures at the moment)

I will post the Sopwith Camel shortly, with some build notes.
