Try using a shim[small strip of plastic] and glue it in the gap this usually does the trick then over it apply some CA glue and sand smooth !

Thanks all for the advice on filling gaps in my models. Big Smile [:D]

Emmm, stretched sprue ....
What a talent and skill !!!

I WILL master this. Any tips, please ?

The DR I is a funky little model, and suprisingly, the three wings seem to glide into place very easily. I was dreading the thought of aligning all three wings, one at a time. The upright outer wing support attaches only to the top and bottom wings, and passes throught the middle.
Once you have the top and bottom wings *just* glued, you can align the middle fairly easily.
When I put the three wings together, and vertically aligned them, they were all horizontially skewed to the fueselage. (I think that I am saying what I am meaning. I may not !)
I built a frame with full Humbrol paint tins and some cigarette lighters, and fitted the model into it, placing a full tin of paint on the end of each wing to apply down force, so that it did not twist again.

I am quite pleased with the result so far. I have applied a touch up of paintwork last night, and intent to do some more once the loved one gets home from work.

(Apparently those that play together, stay together.)

My boyfriend has just bought me a Roden Albatros DV/Va. I don't know how I am supposed to stay focused on one project now!

Frostygirl: would love to see some pics of your D VII. Can you give me a web address to view them?

Thanks again all Smile [:)]

I couldn't resist anymore! I sat there looking at the kit yesterday, and finally decided to open it and start. I wasn't going to start building until later on, but the Lansen kit looked so nice in the box that I just had to get started. Just starting to sand some parts and paint the wheels, but anyway ...

Photos of the progress will be up whenever I can lay my hand on a digital camera. Unfortunately I don't have one myself, so I have to depend on friends ...
Lansen is a very beautyful aircraft! I remember when my school class were visiting the F 6 Wing in the early 70's, and there were lots of Lansen to lay the eyes on ... Tongue [:P]

By all means, frosty, post a thread in the aircraft forum, asking for interest in a WWI a/c GB. I'm sure you'll get quite a few replies. Great looking Dr. VII and Dr. I btw.
Duke: cheers, mate, yeah I can see the light!!

I know how you feel Stuka. First I had a motorcycle accident and now work is so busy I don't even have time to think. Aaaaargh! Oh well. I've got a couple days off next week so will dedicate them to my A-6. It's an amazing kit, loads of cockpit detail (my favourite part!!). John that looks awesome, very smooth paint job. Will you be doing any weathering?

Cheers,

Dan

Dan, yes light weathering will follow the application of the decals (begun tonight). Mainly, I'll be concentrating on the panel lines, nose, leading-edges, drop-tanks and the exhaust nozzles.
Cheers,
John
P.S. Pics will come as soon as I finish all the decals. Big Smile [:D]

Cool stuff John. I've heard that some people weather after they have applied decals. Does anyone else practice this?

Also I know it's a little off subject but I need to mourn the loss of my baby. She went from this:

Frosty, looking great as always! Excellent work!

John, looking forward to seeing the update pics.

Dan, I'm sorry to hear of your accident. The bike does look bad, but at least you're okay. Thank God for that. Wait til the shaking stops before you go back to the workbench.

Keep those builds coming folks!

John,
I generally weather after the decals are on and sealed, except for a general sludge type wash in some areas, aircraft dependent of course!!! I think that the only weathering that i'd do before the decals would be the panel line accenting like seen on the tomcat, because most the grime would cover the markings as well. (take a good look at any US Army Helo and you'll see a great example of this effect)

Glad to hear that you are ok after tossing your bike, thank God!!!

PS - thinking about adding the dorsal fairing on my F-16D as seen on the IDF and other Falcons, but I still want to model a USAF bird.

Pics should be comming soon!!!!

Cool pics frosty. Could only see the DRI, but that is a cool paint scheme.

I am interested to start a GB on WWI aircraft, as at the moment, it is all I build.
I'll have to spend some more time admiring frosty's builds...

Very Cool

Jen:
congrats on ur Dr.I, it really is a cool little a/c & the variety of paint schemes is
enough 2 keep u busy 4 quite some time.... i am planning on modeling several
a/c from Jasta 2 now that i have the Kempf bird done, so i know just how u feel !
as far as Academy kits go, don't judge them all on the basis of the Camel...
that kit is an old ESCI mold rereleased by Academy & is not typical of their
newer fare. i have built their Me-163 Komet & am working on their P-51c
4 the Tuskegee Airmen Group Build & both kits have awesome fit & no flash,
really fine detail & r really enjoyable 2 build, IMHO...
looking forward 2 seeing more of ur builds !

frosty - that is a very nice looking Dvi. I built the revellAG kit for one of my boys, was my first Bi-plane!!! Loads of fun and great schemes!!! Yours is looking much better than mine due to an unfortunate accident while we were moving!!!

I always weather after applying my decals , I find it helps to blend the decals into the plane and makes it look painted on and real.

Sorry about the accident hope you get better soon!

Hi all :)

Dan: My thoughts are with you and your machine...

Thanks everyone for your comments regarding my DR I.
I really am very new to this hobby. Luckily I have my boyfriend around, who has built models all his life. (This is probably my only advantage!)

It is like being a modern Gulliver in our house...
WWII men and vehicles all waiting to come to life and get you in your sleep !!! I'm sure that in the past they have all conspired to capture the dog, or cat, and ride off into the sunset.
Now there is an air escape !!! Duhh.

I have no idea what rib tape is, and if anyone could explain this product, and process to me, I would be grateful. I gather it is to simulate a realistic wing structure.
Rigging is my other challenge to conquer. What to use, how, and (sometimes) where?
I really want to get to a level where I can accurately reproduce these aircraft (WWI), but I know that right now, I am a *slap-together* novice.

Frostygirl: thanks for the info regarding Airfix. I am not totally put-off by the kits, yet, and will start another couple of Airfix kits soon, but they will be different models.
Also, thankyou for the links to your pics. I do not know why I cannot see your pics in threads, or not see the DVII.

Weathering: Can anyone tell me a method of weathering, post decal placement? I am very hesitant to start painting near my decals, as they all seem to be easily lifted.
Is this a 'dry-brush' method?

I hope to finalise my paint touch-ups this weekend. I also hope to get a decent close-up picture to post. I hate that I have done so much fine work, and that my pictures do not capture this. I don't think that digital cameras are all that they are cracked up to be sometimes. When I tried to scan the plane, the lid of the scanner fell and the wheel support/arms fell off. Will think twice about this capture method before trying again.

Looking forward to seeing many more pictures of the fantastic aircraft you are all building.
I, the novice 'slap-together'er', am impressed by all the pics I have seen. You all inspire me to build better aircraft.

:)

Kazandra (Kaz)

Kaz, do you or your boyfriend have an airbrush? One thing that will help protect your decals is a coat of Future floor polish. First, spray on coat of Future with the airbrush straight, (without thinning). When the Future is dry, (after three to five hours) apply the decals. After you let the decals dry overnight, you can apply another coat of Future over them. Spray it on and let it dry for about three hours again. Then, if you wish to weather over them, they are sealed under the Future and well protected.

Weathering can be done both with Dry Brushing, and with a Wash. A Wash is a very diluted color (usually dark brown or black) diluted 90-95% in thinner (in the case of enamels) or water and or alchohol (in the case of acrylics) Washes tend to 'fall' into panel lines and shadow areas, whereas a dry brush can be a lighter color brushed over the top of raised detail to bring them out better. Dry brushed weathering can also be black dry-brushed behyind gun barrels to simulate gunpowder residue left on the wings/fuselage, and on smaller aircraft, silver can be drybrushed on to simulate paint worn off by boots, hands, dust or other weathering agents. More of this kind of info about washes and weathering can be found on Swanny's website. I never have the address available when I post like this, but I know someone will post it for you to go to. I hope alot of this willp help you in some small way. Keep on building Kaz!
