Excellent job on the Hasegawa kit, Marc!Thumbs Up [tup]Thumbs Up [tup] Did it only take you a few weeks to complete the build? If so, that's pretty amazing considering how nice it turned out!

Just curious, but what did you use to give the camo the hard-edge? At least, it looks like it was masked and not done free-hand to me.

Again, very impressive build!

Waikong, arki30 & Mark-thanks for the compliments

Mark, I used rolled up UHU White Tack… like Fun Tac, taped up and sprayed perpendicular. Exactly the way swanny did his IAR-80A… about ½ way down at this link:

Thanks for the info, Marc. I've played around with Blu Tac (or its equivalent) on some spare parts, but have yet to use it for a camo pattern. I'm having a hard time visualizing spraying at a 90 degree angle/perpendicular for some reason. Are you holding the airbrush against the model, so the flow is going almost along the surface? Or are you holding it directly above the model and spraying down (which is perpendicular to the model, but not necessarily the Blu Tac)? When I've played around with Blu Tac, it seems the angle the airbrush is held determines how hard the camo's edge is.

Straight at the model, not from the side along the surface. Angling a little will change the edge. Just be careful of the overspray filling in the opposite side. A bigger roll of Tac will give a softer edge.

Marc, thanks for the diagram; it definitely clarifies things. As they say, a picture is worth a thousand words! Obviously, I'll just have to practice with it to get the results I want. I'll probably be attempting some form of soft-edge on my P-40K I'm working on now. It's painted in the infamous 'Desert Pink,' which appears to have been applied in the field over the factory-painted OD (if I'm wrong about this, someone please chime in!)

Great looking build Marc. The paint and weathering job is awesome. Hope my builds turn out as nice. One small thing I just noticed was that you forgot to paint part of the inside of the cowl intake.

Speaking of my builds, they are still slowly happening. Got a flat coat on my Hasegawa -N but some small white specs got in the finish. So, I'll have to give it a sand and re-spray it. The Mauve kit is getting close to the filling and sanding bit.

Thanks Daniel... and the intake paint did get correctedSmile [:)]

Stuff in my paint really bugs mne for some reason. I have had to rip off wings to put in forgotten cockpits, twice nowSad [:(], and it does not bother me nealry as much as if I have to touch up the paint.Confused [%-)]

WOW !!! Marc.....Your builds just keep getting better and better. I don't know where to start. From the CP to the wheels, that's one excellent build. What really jumps out at me is the weathering on the underside. Very realistic. And the plumbing is a very nice touch. Certainly a winner. Congratulations!!!!

Well, since this group build seems to have no end date, I'll post an 'in progress' picture of my latest project.  This is AMtech's 1/48 P-40K with the resin tail.  Markings are for Lt. R. Johnson 'Jay' Overcash of the 57th FG.  Hopefully I'll have this completed by Christmas, and will post more pics in the Aircraft Forum.

Looks great so far Mark.  Hasegawa has announced a K version of their P-40 due for release in 1'st 1/4 2006.

Marc and Rick, thanks for checking out my in-progress build.  I Futured (is that a word?) over the decals this morning, so hopefully can apply the wash and flat coat soon.

Rick, I've also noticed Hasegawa's P-40K, and will definitely get one once it's released.  It appears to have the markings of Ed Nollmeyer's plane, which is one I want to do.  The AMtech went together nicely, but it will be interesting to compare the two offerings.

Finally got a start on the 1/48 scale Eduard P-40N (Profipack). Got started on the cockpit assembly. Probably about half the way through interior detailing. Nothing special... just finally getting the horse out of the gates on this build after all the Chicago-Seattle travelling the past seven months. Two more months to go.

This one won't be totally OOB. Gonna use Cutting Edge's Colorful Warhawks Pt. 1 decal sheet to make one of the "Parrotheads" of Napier Field, AL circa 1943.

Well... off to O'Hare to catch my flight to Seattle. See ya all next weekend.

I've actually got some progress to report for this build too. Got my Hasegawa P-40N all flat coated and ready for final assembly. Hopefully should have it done pretty soon.

Here's the latest progress on part 2 of my GB submission.  This is Academy's 1/72 P-40E that I'm doing-up to represent a desert Kittyhawk of an unknown squadron.  (I just don't know, someone out there might recognize a unit once the decals are on.)  I'm trying to get a really faded, wind and sand wore look, and so far I'm pretty happy with the results.  Input is greatly appreciated.

Ah yes, the never ending GB.  Anyone heard from Steve ?  Seems like he totally bailed out.  Anyway, nice work on the camo, but the colors look off in the pic.  May just be your camera white balance, but both the Midstone & Dark Earth seem to have a greenish cast, at least on my monitor.

Well I wasnt officially in this GB, but while it was going on I finished a R/M P-40B!

Nothing too exciting. Just OD over light grey in generic pre-war USAAC markings. I was going for a "factory fresh" type look.

So far so good TAdan.  Gotta love the ole Revell P-40B.

Rick, you're right the pics have a bit of a greenish tinge.  I think it had to do with the green cutting mat and the flourescent lighting.  The one pic is kinda blurry too.  The model itself is far less green and blurry.Smile,Wink, & Grin [swg]

Thanks for the kind words, Marc.

I just figured out Photobucket...

So here is a group shot of my favorite subject. 5 R/M P-40B/C's, 1 Otaki/arii P-40 E. 1 R/M Pro-modeler P-40E. 1 Hobbycraft P-40B. 2 K-line P-40 E's repainted.

These were all built over the course of many years. So as you can see the quality varies! I have a pair of R/M P-40B/C kits waiting to be built. I am hoping to build one as the XP-40.

My latest P-40 is still waiting for a set of FCM decals to complete it.

Marc, it was the flourescent lighting that was the culprit.  If your cam has a white balance adjustment you can avoid the problem, or you could correct it with software like Photoshop.

Yeah... where is Steve-O?

Made some progress on the interior of my "Parrothead" Hawk this weekend. That is, until I split the tip of my left middle finger with the exacto knife. Right through to the back of the fingernail. Yuck [yuck] Total Darwin candidate moment I'm embarrassed to admit. And the second time in the past three years that I've nearly lost part of a finger on my left hand (pinky finger back in 2003). Was kinda funny giving the nurse the bird as she stitched it up. I kept apologizing.
