1:72 Hasegawa Karl Morser 60cm Rail Mortar. Complete.
Posted by modelcrazy on Thursday, August 20, 2015 10:28 PM

I'm starting an older boxing of the 1:72 Hasegawa Karl Morser 60cm Rail Mortar. It will be placed it on a scratch built track and drawn by a WR360 locomotive previously constructed. It will also be protected by a Sd. Kfz 7/1 carrying a 2cm four barreled AA gun 38.

This will bw a fairly large diorama which I hope I will have room for.

Here is the progress for this weekend. I have also almost competed the supporting arms, but didn't get a pic of them.
I am really looking forward to the full completed diorama, which I will document here. I think I mentioned in the Artillery GB, that I was planning on keeping it dark grey and draping some camo netting over it.

Thanks for following.

I got some work done tonight as well. Here are the carrying arms and the mostly completed mortar.

Oh wow!  I didn't realize the various type of models you make.  This looks to be an excellent build especially since it's being built by you sir.

Thanks Toshi, I will be starting a Triceratops soon with my grandson. As most of the members here can attest, I do it all.....well I am little apprehensive about figures.

Speaking of figures, I have on back order HO scale Preiser German Army WWII Unpainted Tank Crewmen.

I know they’re not the exact scale, but they are the only thing that looks to work. Anyway, looking at many stores that sell them, everyone seems to be out of stock.
I think I'll portray the mortar sitting on a siding waiting for orders. Hopefully I can get this done before October 17th, for our IPMS show here in Boise.

Here’s tonight’s progress. I’ve completed the Karl, and will start painting and weathering this weekend.

I got some paint on the Karl today using my new bench and old paint booth setup. All went well, just a little awkward at first.
Anyway, here's my idea so far. The mortar will be sitting on its track, covered with camo netting. Next to it will be the WR-360 on a parallel track equipped with a bumper. Whether the WR-360 is/was pulling the mottar or not will be up to the observer. At the end of that track will be the Sd Kfz 7/1 AA gun. Up to 20 personal, when they finial come off back order, will be taking a break, after applying the camo netting and awaiting for new orders.

Wow Steve really ambitious, and like all these things once the ground cover goes in with some earth tones and greens, it really come to life. I think youre doing fantastic work and the Morser is already out of the way, awesome....

Thanks Terry, I still need to weather the mortar some. I was going to use painted medical gauze to simulate the camo nets. I'm hopping I can get it to look somewhat real.

Nice dio idea terry. just one thing, there is a general rule for dio's which says nothing should be parallel to the edge. I used to ignore this, but have found since angling the dio it does look a hell of a lot better. You might want to try laying the track at a slight angle, it doesn't nee to be a lot. Looking at that scene, I think I would pull the left side forward about an inch or so, move the Morser back a touch, taking it off centre. Just a suggestion.

Thanks Bish. I was thinking last night after taking the picture that everything looked a little too symmetrical. I thought about angling the Mortar track inward toward the locomotive like it would end at a switch somewhere off the base. Setting the mortar off center is a good idea. I may get another piece of track so the loco isn't on a dead end. The base may also be a little too wide I think. Hmmm, I wish I had those figures to play with the layout better.

Normally rail tracks run closer together and one tends to curve into the other. If you have it, the start of a curve would be nice, if not, yes you could angle one in. When you say the base is to wide, do you mean left to right or front to back. I do think a couple of inches could be chopped off the front, but that also depends on where your putting the figures.

I think It's a little too much front to back, and yes I agree, I should put the tracks together more. Now that we lost our LHS, getting more track is a little harder. There is a RR HS in town but their hours are very odd. I have to take a long lunch it go there. I still have time though. I still need to weather the mortar and build the SD Kfz. I'll do some playing with it and take another pic tonight.

OK, let’s try this. I'll get some more track for the mortar and put the loco on a through track. I have also curved the track and moved the gun a little to the right some to break up the symmetry.

Well I think I'm done with the Karl Morser. Now I just need to attach it to the base, but I have a lot to do to the base, and yet another build to add to it so I'm nowhere complete yet. The guys that I have on back order seem to be on back order all over the world. I have looked everywhere for these guys. Oh well, until then I guess the mortar, locomotive and AA gun will sit empty.

Thanks Toshi, I have new pics here. I decided to go ahead and drape a tarp over the muzzle. I love doing
tarps.
That’s just a fraction of my new work bench. It is 8’ long and 3’ deep.

And some close-ups.

There’s more to come here. I am going to start the Sd KFZ 7/1 tonight for the full diorama.
Stay tuned and thanks to all who are following.

I started the Sd Kfz 7/1. It looks like quite a little kit with amazing detail. Anyway here it is.

That Morser look great Steve, I do like the tarp, is that painted tissue. Nice start on the Halftrack as well. It does look a nice kit. The new dio layout is much better.

Thank you for your kind words Bish and thank you for following.
I have an update on the halftrack. I have completed everything except the gun. I have to say, I am very impressed with this kit. Who knew? If you are looking for a 1/72 Sd Kfz, don’t overlook the ROG kit. It’s going together like a Hase kit.

I decided to take a little break from the AA gun and work on the rails, so here it is.
The cork bed.

The ties added.

The ties painted.

The switch.

Nice, I think the switch is a great addition, it helps bring the two items together rather than just being on separate tracks. If you don't mind another suggestion, before it goes to far, try your AA vehicle in the rear left corner as well as front right and see what you think looks best. I just have a feeling that the way i think you are putting the loco, the AA might look better in the back corner, perhaps with the resting figures and maybe a Kubelwagen or something at the front. But that's just a guess without seeing it laid out and might not work.

Thanks Bish and Mike,
Here you go. I moved the loco and AA gun around. The mortar will have to stay where it is. I really want some suggestions. Which one looks better? Or any other combination.
I like the idea of the Kubelwagen Bish, it would fill an empty spot. Of course another idea would be to put the AA gun in the background and shave off another couple of inches off the front.
