I think the AA where it is in the first pic and the loco in the third, but an inch or two further left. I take it the loco can pull the Morser from both front and back. I would keep the base as it is, and most of the figures can go there, maybe a few on the move. This gives some nice sense of scale and will draw the eyes from front to back.

That's always a good idea. And on more than one occasion my better half has made the right call in a dio composition. Of course, i would never admit that to her.

Here is my 2 cents the third picture has the most balanced lay out. Though the addition of figures will play a major role in setting the scene and telling the story you want.

A company/squad marching through, train worlkers,  the gun crew, the Sd Kfz crew, dirt easement?, paved?, gravel under the ties, signal at the switch. You can do a lot or a little. Have your figures doing something -eating, sleeping, smoking, working on???, cleaning? not jut sranding frozen in a frozen stance. Have them looking at the machines so you end up with the viewers eye following their eyes, flowing along and through  the dioramma; not hop scotching all over.  Great job so far- good luck on what ever you deside.

I finally received 6 guys, but they seem just too few (they fit in the dio great). So I just ordered 30 Luftwaffe air and ground crew. My hope is that I can make them convincing enough at the scale to be plausible. Trying to find figures at 1/72 scale and in the proper situation is frustrating. Preiser makes the perfect set but they apparently aren’t molding them right now.
I will be working on the AA gun tonight and getting some painting done.
Duster,
Thank you for your input. I hope to have guys everywhere, working on the camo netting, hanging around the gun and locomotive and maybe even messing with the track or switch. The ground will be track ballast, dirt, rock and some grass on the edges both dried and yellow/green. My idea is pretty precise with several intresting scenes going on. I just hope I can pull it off.

I like the layout in the first picture. What would really kick it over the top would be the inclusion of a column of troops along the bottom with the Kubel and some horse drawn artillery as if they are headed to the front lines.

But that's just my vision of what I can see happening there lol. That would be a tall order to produce.

Artillery type figures are not easy to find. The main problem with air force figures is that they are wearing the one piece coveralls. The only other option would be to get a selection of figures and pick and chose from those. Which Preiser set where you looking at.

I bought the the 1/72 German Luftwaffe 1935 – 1945 figure set. I will have to do some modifications to them. I'm not happy with my available choices.

I know what you mean Steve. I find it very frustrating with 72nd figures. Even for German air force crews I don't feel there are enough, and they have the best range.

Steve sometimes in 1/72 the better suited figures are the ones that come with certain sets, like a panzer crew for example. I guess if you buy for the figures you get a free kit?I know Dragon has some in that scale, relatively cheap too but overall not much to pick from.

Thanks Terry,
There are 30 guys in the pack I ordered. There should be a few that work, although adding a Pz IV may be a cool addition.

Well to add just a tad more interest to this growing diorama, I followed Bish and Mike's advice and ordered a Kublewagen. The best part, I get an FW190 for free!!!

Steve

PS.
I debated getting a Munitionsschlepper

Well isn't that a bonus. Not sure if that's the same Kubel Academy sell in there other sets, I guess it is. Its a pretty nice looking little model.

I have not stalled on this build. I received the guys yesterday and started to paint them last night. Figures are a serious weakness of mine, especially in 1/72. This may take a while. I'm also starting to lay down the balast for the tracks and some ground cover.

I know what you German Steve. I have just gotten to grips with 35th figures. In 72nd, I don't worry to much about the detail especially in things like faces and insignia.

I haven't been working on the mortar for about a week in lieu of working on other builds, however I did work on the camo nets while I was spraying other subjects.

MC what did you decide on for net material? i am not sure what the german poles looked like, just what we used in the late '70s. other subjects, eh? like a romulan battlecruiser?

I used cheesecloth. I am going to apply some spray glue and add some landscaping turf to and see what that looks like.

Tosco makes some really nice figures in plastic, at leastthe ones for my OTS German 105mm. i wouldn't get to detailed on the figures. prime base coat the geman gray green, light tan for the skin than a darker sudge all over and wiped off so it fills some creases. the important thing on a diorama is the story.

is your FLAK going to be deployed? is this just a swich "in the field" or part of a railroad yard, albeit a small one. maybe a switch tower in the back vorner with the kubelwagen parked next to it? that would be less crowded. since that puts the FLAK in the front you could have a parallel road with it on that. just some thoughts.

I like the look of those nets. I have never been to sure about what to use for nets in 72nd. I will be interested to see how they look once applied.

I'm working on the halftrack today. I'm going to have the flak gun deploying. One of the barrels broke off and I can't find it, so to hide it, there will be a guy removing a tarp off the broken half. I think I can make it work.

Here is the Sd Kfz 7/1 quad AA gun. I broke off 1 of the guns during the build and it went through the wormhole and hasn't come out yet, so I added a tarp to hide my boo boo. Next, I'll build the Kublewagen.
Anywho, enjoy.

Here is the camo netting so far. I added some landscaping turf to them. My only concern is that it’ll hide the mortar so well you won't be able to see much detail. I’ll have to see if I can cover most of it, like they are just covering it.

Here's a small tease of the Morser diorama. I still have to complete the Kublewagen to finish the scene. The group just received orders from the commander and are discussing the plan of action. The dog and guy on the locomotive are engaged in a stair down as another of the loco crew is checking out the loco's brakes. Although he's hard to see, the locomotive engineer is standing on the cab platform waiting for the meeting to end.
The Sargent leaning on the halftrack and Private are shooting the breeze as the rest of the halftrack crew are getting ready to move out.

Anyway, that's how I see it.

That's really a nice presentation coming along there.

In the future, if you break of something like a barrel, it's really not hard at all to fabricate an ersatz barrel out of stretched sprue or even just some appropriately-sized sprue, especially if you're going to put a tarp on it. And the tarp ideally SHOULD drape over a barrel to look realistic, in truth. It doesn't look too bad though there.
