AMT Space 1999 Eagle finished

Lookin' good!  I'm enjoying your progress on this.  Makes me want to dig up a set of Space:1999 for my DVD collection!

Looking really great Karl!  Now that I've found this little gem of a thread I'll be following along...this program always had a special meaning for me, as my uncle was part of the production crew. I'm anxious to see the doog magic put to work on this baby's finish.

Well, here's a small update; I'm basically finsihed with the base coat. I have primed, undercoated, and then base coated her, and now I'm stuck waiting on decals, as I want to do a very subtle weathering on this, kinda like I've seen on one of those sites that was applied to one of the actual 48' models used on the show.

So here's the model prined with Tamiya Fine White primer. This stuff is amazing. Fills in imperfections, and you could actually use it for a white base coat.

And then a Panzer Gray base coat--after this, I wanted to just put some Balkenkreuz on it and brap it over the Eastern Front! LOL!

Oh yeah; and I also made the serrated edges here on the "ear dimples" or whatever they are here. I used a heat tool to nick them. This is the base coat, applied not-quite-opaquely over the gray, to give some "aging" to the finish, and some depth-of-shadow.

And here'e a sample of the weathering I'm going to plan for it. This is really just the rudimentary first step; but you can see hints of the tones I'm going to use. Of course, I need the rest of the decals--the ones I've ordered allegedly contain the big red stripes, so I'm going to wait to get them, and the decide whether or not I want to decal them, or just use them as templates to paint them on. It's gonna be a bear to mask them effectively; I'll probably use bare metal foil to do that, if it comes down to that.

Well, like I said....I'm just waiting on those decals......come on, mail lady!........

Definitely looking forward to seeing this one get painted. Just goes to show that the skills are transferrable across the genres. You can evade the fly-boys though since this one does fly.

   Karl, I have a suggestion for your A/C build, its available in both 1/72(My Preferred scale) and 1/48th, The Horton HO(GO)229! Its simple, a flying wing. There is lots of info on the net, Its WWII Deutsch And it looks like something from BSG or B5.....

        So is the Eagle done yet? I was given the moonbase Alpha kit a few years back and I'm thinking about pulling it out also alonmg with my eagle. Lrt us know when its done and you start on an A/C!!!!!!!!!

Jagdwolf--that's the one; the Amai kit! It doesn't look like a stellar kit, from what I could tell!

I'm going to go with a slightly distressed finish on this one as well. It should be quite the challenge to make it look "weathered" but within the frame and context of space, and not a WWII batlefield! LOL!

Very nice work on the eagle! It's good to branch out and built subjects that aren't necessarily what you normally build. I go to all modeling forums, ships, armor, aircraft and get lots of valuable information. I have recently been lurking and posting in armor forums because being a noob to airbrushing and weathering, I felt that was a great place to go for information and it has been. In my current build of a klingon cruiser, I felt it was a "tank" in space LOL! So I am painting it accordingly. Thanks for all the valuable information and a shout out to all you armor modelers!

Space 1999 was a cool show, even if it now looks a litttle dated on my DVDs that I have of the first two years! The one thing that always shines for me though is this ship! I love the Eagles!

I wonder if AMT will ever re-release this? I know there are some other Japanese models out there, but the ones I've seen are even worse than this one--the one has red plastic?!?!

Hmmm. well, I don't think I'll go in for the dorsal ladder fix, cm; That will have to wait for the "second" major rebuild, if I ever indeed do get around to one! But thanks for that info; I didn't even notice that.

Nothing wrong with Sci-Fi. I've been a fan for ages!

Well, the SF kits I do build don't include SW or the politically correct Fed wimps from ST: only Klingon cruisers for me. Otherwise, my collection includes Babylon 5 (Starfury and Thunderbolt), Captain Scarlet and the Mysterons, UFO, Space:1999, BattleTech (Clans only), CAV, and Gear Krieg.

Ok, Doog.. here's why you should build one..

It's German WWII.

It supported the German ground forces.

Build a Stuka and a Stuka Zu fuzz.. line them up togheter ;)

Again, it's German WWII..

 And it's a model..

Probably not a lot of comments because it's the Sci Fi section and most of the folks don't want others to know they lurk here on occasion.

Plus the Eagle is kinda off the beaten track for most folk that stick with SW, ST and mecha.

A good modeler will tackle every thing, not box themself into one subject.

This project is fantastic and is coming along great, it is really a beautiful space ship and you are doing justice to the original desing that the kit didn't have from the start.
