Wow! Yet another facet of Timmy is revealed. YOU SiR, make me smile. That must have been a serious adventure by doing that. You must have a ton of stories tell. 

 

 

 HA!!!! I can only remember about 20 min. of my 4 month  "adventure"...... And 10 min. of that involve a Sherrif..... who had no idea why I set up my "campsite on the lawn of the Sherrif's office......

Whoa! Great photographic persistence story and results! It's not luck getting great photos, It's being there at the right time with the right equipment and pulling it off. No great shots off the couch I always mention to wannabe photographers. Good story and good job plus you had the neat experience of being blown away as a side effect.

BTW, Northern lights have even reached into SE Kansas a few times in my life. I recall as a kid seeing a red Northern sky several times and even a few decades ago Kansas was bombarded with a couple of spectacular nights of first class shafts, waves and colors. Good show!

 Well........... This being a "family friendly" forum I can say this.

THE FOLLOWING OCCURED IN A VERY SMALL TOWN IN COLORADO IN 1987.

A few hour's before I got there , " somebody " DOSED the Sherrif with a squirtgun full of an "Illegal" substance. (They got most of the Officer's in town ) So my encounter with "THE LAW" was a lot funnier from my point of view! That Sherrif watched me set up my campsite for over an hour. Never tried to stop me, never said a word ,just leaning on his windowsill watching. ( I couldnt find the actual campsite...... because I wasn't "seeing straight" myself. )

I had EVERYTHING set up and had just lit my campfire ( I dont think the tree survived ) when the Sherrif leaned out the window of his office and said (and I quote)  " Like ...HEY MAN.... you totally can't camp here." I never even noticed the building next to me. So the"Magical" appearance of THE LAW starteled me greatly!  I stomped out the  fire in the"shrubbery"  and packed my stuff out in about 5 min.

I found myself in the campground about 8 hour's later...... I have NO idea how I got there......

There were a LOT of ANGRY police patrolling town the next day...............

Wow! Now that is a story, Tim. Truly, this sounds like something that I would write in my comic book series! Yours is based on reality though, and that makes this even funnier. What's the saying? Truth is stranger than fiction? 

I couldn't wait to try it. This stuff works great! This is showing some serious promise. I have more testing to do but it is looking good so far. It sure beats a dead plug as a Nav light. It is very simple to use too. 

This is hard to photograph without the light looking blown out. To the human eye the light pattern is really tight. 

More details as I progress.

I was hoping to add color to these lights. I did a little testing today by using clear red paint. After three applications I was getting it near to an orange. The intensity of the light really burns through the color. With the light in it's off state, it's a beautiful red. For grins, I might try a standard red paint. Maybe, a non-clear paint will diffuse the light better? I have my doubts, but I will try it.

Has anyone dealt with this issue? The instructions recommend using colored light sources, a color wheel, or colored transparent paint. It just occurred to me that maybe I could try finding transparent colored film that I could sandwich between the light source and the filament. I am not sure how that would work, but it might be worth a try. Worst case scenario is that I leave the color in white.

Secondly--I reviewed the tail assembly to see if I could add lighting. I do not see an easy way to thread a filament into the light ports. The wall of the fins is way too thin to drill through safely, and, too long. The only way I can see doing this is to cut a portion of each fin off, cut a groove into the cross-sections where the filaments would go, drill holes through the light ports, install the filaments, and then glue the sections together again. Finally, I'd have to do some major body work to make it presentable. I think that I could fit one filament at the most into each fin wall. Is all of this worth doing? Boy...I don't know. I hoped to get at least three filaments into each port to increase the size of the light footprint.

I couldn't make this stuff up if I tried. I'm not that smart. I would PM these stories to you, but I suspect others following along would feel they were "missing out".

Just didn't want you to cut that fin, only to realise that there's no easy way to re-align the two part's back together with out using some sort of alignment pin's. Which would get in the way of the wire / fiber.

Not to mention all the glue thumbprint's and "Cussin" !

Do you remember in the movie Apollo 13 when Ken Mattingly (Gary Sinise) was in the command module simulator trying to work out the power sequence problem? Then, when he has a brain storm to reroute the batteries? They run the test again and the guy watching the voltage gauge goes, "I think we got it Ken." This is followed by dramatic music.

BANG! I think we got it folks. (Imagine dramatic music).

Whilst I was typing my last post to Tim I had glanced over to a pile of stuff and I noticed a pair of 3D glasses. They are the anaglyph type with blue and red lenses. I thought... Hey! I can try those as light filters to sandwich with.

Well... I'll be. It works! Not only does it work... but it works well. I get a nice even color dispersion. With the clear red paint I was getting color fluctuations. Frankly, the latter looked like garbage.

See below. There are a few things to note here. The film does reduce the light output some, but, not as dramatically as these image may indicate. The camera didn't convey very well what the human eye can see. So, I had to under expose the images.  Lastly, I needed a third hand for this image and the filament may not be over the LED light source as squarely as it should be.

A quick update. I tested the power drain of adding a third Led to my power pack. It seems to be Ok. I ran it for a few hours and there is no noticeable light loss either by the added load, nor, by battery drain. I am sure the battery life will be shortened, but, it does not look like it will be detrimental. It seems that I have the green light for this NAV light change.

Speaking of a green light. I need to find a green color filter for the other NAV light. Correct me if I am wrong... I think that subs follow the same color scheme as aircraft. I will see what Michaels has for translucent film, or similar. 

Lastly... I looked closer at the Cadillac fins and their thickness. I don't have much material to work with in comparison to the thickness of the fibre optic filament. It will be pretty precarious to not cut through the fins entirely. I think it's doable though. I'd have to be very careful, and, take it slow. Still on the fence with this. I might need Steve 5's boot again.

Hey.... we could use another brain on this. I cant be the only one with "goofy" advice.

If I continue to stir the pot with ideas, this project will quickly go straight to h e double hocky stick's (why are we in this bucket?..... and why is it going so fast?... )

Without actually having the part in my hand I am limited on what "goofy idea" I can come up with.

A question: How tight of a bend / kink can the fiber optic handle?  I have "heard of people cutting a 90 deg. notch in a fiber to get around a corner, but I dont know if that's doable in the real world.

Hey Tim-- Steve 5 must have his boots in for repair or something. He's just not saying. There is no way he'd pass up a chance to use them. I hear he is like the Jean-Claude Van Damme of Australia. He kick boxes kangaroos for the fun it. You know how tough them kangaroos are. One good kick and they'll take your head clean off. Shoot. The kangaroos fear the guy. They see him coming and most will drop over and play dead. True (cough!) story.

Self contained battery holder with power switch.

Model Power peel and stick #510-1. These are nice because they have the current limiting resistor built in. With a 3 volt power source, (2 AA batteries or a wall transformer), they produce little to no heat. They designed these nicely. You can find these at other on-line locations, but here is where I bought them.

Fiber Optic. I purchased the .030 size. It fits perfectly for my Nav lights. There are other sizes available that you can consider for whatever project you need them for.

I am still working out the color diffuser film. I bought some transparent packaging wrap at Michaels today. They are a little too color transparent. I'd have to double or triple the layers to get a deeper color. I am still working this out.

As for the process--I will give you more details once I get there.
