Besides being a fantastic build... it's reading the funny pages at the same time.

raider83, ModelNerd, bondoman - you guys got the spirit!
Luftwoller :  Only through total obedience can I hope to gain modeling time!  ;
dirtball:  Thanks- I think I'll be working on this one some time to come, so get comfy.
namrednef :  Hey!  Fugeddaboutit!  And don't you dare hide the Helldiver- or you'll be sleeping wit da fishes!  :D
wyoroy, davew6003, cmixson:  Mucho gracias, amigos!
Mikeym_us, namrednef, roadkill_275, Bondoman:  That's a great discussion!  I think that designs evolved as the designers gain knowledge and experience, and as the general science of aviation evolves.  Of course, there's always the economic factor- being able to use existing tooling, etc- and then there's the whole "brand" image, to boot!  Look at the signiture rudder shapes used by various manufacturers- the Fokker "comma" for example.  One more note:  The "missing link" between one craft and the next generation is often the prototype- take a look at the XSB2C and you'll see what I mean...
Boomerang:  Thanks so much!  I'll have to drag out my old issues and look Mr Steinbrun's works.  I'm sure you give me too much credit!
wing_nut:  But,,, but... I'm not trying to be funny.  Psych!!!  Thanks, man!

Hang tight, fellas- another update is in the works- I'm just waiting for glue to dry..... manana!

I have spent my whole morning, and a 1/2 pack of smokes, getting caught up. Words can't describe how inadequate I now feel as a modeler, but I am enjoying this thread thoroughly.

Hey Bondoman you ever notice the similarities between the SB2U HellDiver (Biplane) and the SB2C Helldiver (Monowing)? That they took an aircraft of 1930's origin and come out again in the late war era with an aircraft of a similar design but uprated to 1940's standards?

Namrednef, The BF2C was a Scout Fighter before the SBC series. The US Navy designation system prior to 1962 had a lot of quirks in it and probably made sense to somebody in Naval HQ. It can sure be a bugger to figure out sometimes though.

To further your point: I posted BF2C when I meant BFC-2......at least I think that's what I meant!Dunce [D)]

Every time I think I have seen it all-- you continue to amaze me.  Just what you did with the sprue for the radio knobs-- I would've never have thought of something like that-- but now I am...thanks to you!!  You're entertaining us and teaching us at the same time.  My hat is off to you sir!!

wonderful lessons!

My F-106s articulating elevons is such a hack job compared to this!

...The next time I do control surfaces I'll definitely do the groove and front edge build-up thingy. When they marry up like the really do in real life it'd be so much better looking. I've got a dang gap! Drat!

Everything looks awesome, but I had to chime in saying that that upper right bunch of added knobs looks kinda blobbed compared to all your other work--which is truly awesome!

I'm sure everyone will agree that no one is at the point of never needing advice or able to learn, so I hope my noobish self can survive giving some slight critique to someone who has far more skill in this art I do :P

Bertman, I'm sure you mean well, but personally I can't imagine being able to manipulate several pieces the size of the "O" on a penny into place - with nary a glue mark to be seen!

truly, I'm not saying that. I can see that HE can though :) To me, the upper right knobs look done by someone other than all the rest. I also know that in the end you won't be able to tell. But, seeing as he is taking the time to do that small detail, he'd want it all to look awesome. From my own experience, I tend to rush when people expect things form me, and often I produce something slightly below my usual standards to appease them.

I'm all for gushing compliments on you Chuck, so I hope you don't take critiques like this the wrong way. If it was me, I'd want little things likes this pointed out as well because that's what makes us better in the end :P

trexx knows my sinister plan- NYAH-ah-ahhhhhh!!!  Evil [}:)]

Thanks again, guys- and bertman has a point.  Those d@mned dials have been bugging me since I slid and swore the little buggers into position.  There are two problems: the bits of sprue are just too big for the space, and they should be SILVER- not black.  I should change them...

I know the subject of critique can and has been a sore subject on just about every model forum I know of.  Me?  I take crit every day as a professional artist- it all part of the business- and no it's not always easy take.  The thing is, I care about my work- and want to get better at it every chance I get.  One chap on another forum made acomment about the depthe of the kit's LE slat- I hadn't noticed it, but I jumped on the chance to improve the model.  Here, one fella suggested I do the wing fold conversion.  tempting, but I'm building open flaps, so no thanks. Wink [;)]  If those knobs do stick out, well, I'd better hike up the boys and get to it!  Thanks- I don't mind any help in keeping on the right trail.  Cool [8D]

Chuk, not only do I applaud the work you've put into this kit (lord knows I'd never have the patience), but I also applaud your stance on constructive criticism.

It's refreshing to see an artist take into consideration something an outsider suggested (and even admit that something could be done better).  So many times, all you see is "yeah, well let's see you do better".

Great job and i look forward to your next installment.

I think the radio looks fantastic!Thumbs Up [tup]Thumbs Up [tup] I never thought to use tiny pieces of stretched sprue for radio knobs and I've scratchbuilt a few model radios myself.

Perhaps we can have SteveM from the scratchbuilding forum whack his snare drum a few times to wake Abe up.Big Smile [:D]
