(Anti) Submarine Warfare GB 2010 *CLOSED*
Posted by kermit on Saturday, November 28, 2009 6:18 AM

Sitrep:

This is a group build effort involving any kind of submarine from any kind of era and also anything that is or was known to be used to kill submarines. So this means Subs, Destroyers, ASW Helo's and ASW Aircraft or Spotters. WW1, WW2, Cold War and Modern Time builds are all welcome

Build will run from January first 2010 untill January first 2011. If you think you can finish in this timeframe, by all means apply.

================================

Rules of Engagement:

NONE, apart from the usual little ones:

1. Any skill level is welcome

2. Any kind of build is allowed in any scale as long as it is appropriate for the subject

3. Started projects allowed. Lets say... up to 20% finished

4. Crossovers,... sure go ahead

5. AM or custom decals, scratching, PE and the likes....sure knock yourself out.

6. What ifs..... hmmm dunno. Ask the group and let them decideWink

7. Last, but to me personally, most important rule:

Participating with a model comes with responsibilities. I do expect people applying with a build to post updates and commit to their builds. If you cannot or dont want to continue on a build, be a sport and let the group know. Thats all.

7 HAVE FUN![swg]

As long as ASW helicopters are acceptable I'd be interested.

Aaronw,

Anything ASW would be acceptable so that's a yesWink [;)] Basically, Submarines and anything that can kill a sub is eligible for the group build.

Can we get some ppl going on this one?

Thats looks very appropriate indeedWink [;)]... 1/72 scale?

The exact rules and details still need to be worked out as i wanted to see if there was any interest present on the forum. Looks like there is. I will get on this as soon as i can.

Important thing for me in any kind of group would be the emphasis on fun. After all it's a hobby isn't it? So that means i will have little to no rules at all. Post your build where you want.

Being a mediocre graphic artist and/ or photoshopper i will try to get something of a badge going but anyone who feels like it can pm me with their designs and or ideasSmile [:)] Also the title on this thread is just a working template, nothing definitive. Any and all ideas and suggestions are more than welcome at this point.

Would my starting date of January 1st be acceptable to everyone?

January 1st would work for me, that gives me a little time to clear my work bench.

Bondo, I like the Marlin, I have an older version of that kit, but I like the decals better on yours. I think that settles the questin of USN or USCG for mine, Im going to have to keep my eyes open for that issue to build a USN Marlin.

Yes! I want to do my Airfix Sunderland! (I figured by Flower Class Corvette from the 'Battle of the Atlantic' GB would be cheating.

The HSL has to be one of the ugliest helicopters I have ever seen (I just googled it). It looks like a prehistoric Chinook. What an awesome subject for this build, though! As much as I consider myself a fan of helicopters, I never heard of this design.

Kermit, the Anigrand kit is 1/72 scale.

Yep, the HSL is 1/72. It is kind of a what if, as it didn't actually enter service as intended. It was Bell's only tandem rotor helicopter, and beat the Sikorsky HSS-1 Seabat (SH-34) for the Navy's first dedicated ASW helicopter.

Unfortunately it made so much racket the sonar guys couldn't do their job, and the Navy ended up going with the runner up, the HSS-1. It did provide some early experience with ASW equipment and was useful for testing mine sweeping equipment and techniques. Bell also credits it with helping to work out some wrinkles in their helicopter division which put them in a good position for their next big helicopter contract, the UH-1 "Huey".

Yes it is something of an ugly duckling. Smile [:)]

Kermit, I'd like to join if I can please.  I'm getting back into building and have already joined the FAA and Battle of the Atlantic GBs for next year.  I'll start adding to the stash (funnily enough, the GBs I've joined don't match anything in the stash!) with the GBs in mind.

Actually, I've got a 1/600 Airfix Leander.  I'll offer that up if okay.

Bondonman, that Marlin is awesome.  Really looking forward to seeing her go together.

Edit: duh, I could also lump in with the 1/350 Dragon USS Spruance that's sitting on the top shelf in my study ... and I see it every day!  Might be a bit ambitious early on as I've always dreamed of getting some PE for it.

 Andy,

G'day mateWink [;)] and thanks for joining! Have fun with your build. Have added the Leander to the list but you can always change that if you decide to build your Spruance class.

Kermit I will be building the Sikorsky SH-60F Ocean Hawk or the TBF Avenger depending which one I can get my grimy mitts on. The TBF was considered a sub killer in the North Atlantic during WWII with 30 U-Boats killed to its credit, so hopefully that would fit into the group as well.

The avenger would certainly do Randy. Anything goes as long as its a sub or is or has been used as a sub killer or ASW patrol craftWink [;)]

Have a 1:48 Italeri TBM in my stash myself that would be a pleasure to do lol.

Btw i know you're fond of Wildcats, right? If you could get ur hands on the 1:48 Hobby Boss FM-1...it has an atlantic scheme and decals for it tooSmile [:)].

Lemme know when you make ur decision buddyThumbs Up [tup]

Cheers, Richard.  I'll stick with the Leander at the moment.  My wife was just looking at White Ensign Models for a PE or resin detail kit for it but couldn't find one.  Again, might be over-ambitious but...

Andy over-ambition is what makes a better modeler out of us all, nothing wrong with that.

Kermit thanks for the info on the Hobby Boss FM2 kit, I will look for that one too. You are right I do like the Wildcat, maybe one day I will have the full Grumman Cat collection who knows.

Thanks for the support, Randy.  My wife is also researching a 1/350 Dragon kit for my Battle of the Atlantic GB entry - maybe the Gleaves-class DD.  She's doing well for a 'non-shiphead'.

Randy,

Found out it was the FM-1 that was in my head...Blush [:I] Could remember it that well since the atlantic scheme i mentioned was involving an overall grey cat instead of the usual blue colorsSmile [:)].

Aircraft based on escort carriers were very often used for ASW patrolling so there's a whole bunch of choices left for you.

Richard

EDIT: Knew i had a pic of it here somewhereSmile,Wink, & Grin [swg]:
