Ok i'm in thenYes Some really cool builds going on in here, I like that  Lynx up there and your Avenger looks great....

I see Randy is up to his old tricks building kits with 40 year old molds..I dunno how you do it Randy, bringing those old kits so superbly back to life like you do, i occasionally see those kits at my LHS, have to walk past them to get to the Tam, Has sectionYes

So this is a one year build right......Put me down for a Trumpeter 1/48 Wellington, i found  a set of decals for a Polish SQD in Coastal Command, The A/C still wears it's night bomber colours so i guess it was a recent hand me down from Bomber command...In fact it has no radar poles or leigh light so it must be prior to those additions...I did look for Resin conversions but only found a wharehouse of Eduard PE so i'll order a coloured set for the pit a mid fueselage set and a bomb bay set, i'll probably replace the flexible guns as well....

This will breach my 20 hour limit for a single kit so i may nead to hear on occasion some motivational speakingTongue Tied

Julez,

The trick with revell/monogram is to find that kit for a ridiculously low price compared to a tamigawa that actually fits and is fun to buildWink They are outthere...

Wow... a big *ss trumpeter bomber wingy thing with extra whistles and bells to boot? Youre in youre in yesyesyesyes lol. I am sooo gonna enjoy that one.... Always wanted to do one of them big trumpy's....

Ill add you to the rollcall buddy. And dont worry bout the motivational courtesy kicks in the you know whatWink

Glad to have you onboard

Thanks Richard, I've been eyeing of that Bomber since it first hit the shelves at my LHS but i've always managed to talk myself out of it, to expensive, to time consuming for my limited patience ect ect but i guess i need change, Tamigawa single engines are getting a little routine......

I'll get the kit as soon as i finish the P-38 and make a start straight away...I will more than likely take a break a couple of times during the build and knock up a couple more P-51's.....

So obviously when you go to the States you won't be building but pop into the forums every now and then and let us know how your travellingYes

Well i read a couple of online reveiws on the Wellington and the reviewers give the kit a Yes I know there is a lot of Trumpeter bashing in these forums but i'm not going to let that dissuade me from building it....." If you want a 48 Wellington thats the only one"......Apparently the lattice type construction is a little overdone on the exterior but the reveiw builds look good to me...I have rethought all the Eduard bits i was planning on, it's obvious that when the fues is closed all that detail disappears so i'll stick with the cockpit set and the bomb bay set, bomb bay doors i'll leave open......maybe replace the guns but i'll see what the kit ones are like first.....Man that Big Welly will look awesome in the cabinet with a little led light on it.....

How did this GB get two stars??? That bites! We need to post it up. Did someone have an ax to grind?

Here's another ASW subject for you guys, just wrapped.

The Frog 1/72 Avro Shackleton Mk.3 (tricycle) as SAAF no. 1721 of 35 Squadron at AFS Ysterplaat.

This is an oldie but goodie kit, recently rereleased by Revell. That'd be a good thing, as the decals in my old AMT boxing were worthless.

But I got a nice set from MAV decals in SA, and built around that. White/Dark Grey/PR Blue which is sort of an intermediate scheme.

All moving control surfaces, I always let those be because although they look overscaled, I think they add a certain charm to things.

I built three Mk. 30 acoustic homing torpedoes from ball point pens. When Santa brings me an Airfix Nimrod, I'll raid it, borrow and add some sonobouys or flares or whathaveyou to the fourth weapons position.

I added detail to the wheel wells, built a box for the nose one.

Other than that just the basics. I hope you like it!

Absolutely stunning model Bondo!Bow Down I love what you have done with it and the South African markings look great too. Makes me think of that 1/48 B339 Buffalo with old style dutch orange triangles i have always wanted to build....Wink Did you put a wash over the raised panellines or are those drybrushed?

Thank you again for sharing your work with us here in the group. Ummm... by all means post a build log here if and when you decide to do another ASW/Patrol wingy thingyBig Smile.

DONE!!!

Its been sitting on shelf the last week or two waiting for the finishing touches. I think the panel lines stand out fine without weathering so I won't, besides this particular machine belongs to a flight display team (Black Cats) so I doubt they would let her get to dirty. Its also why I left her torpedos off (though I have seen this serial number aircraft in normal fleet markings as well)

What can I say about the build? Parts, well molded good detail. The decals were OK, but not great, a couple tried to fold back on themselves and a few were actually easier to paint then decal. Had trouple getting a couple aligned so ended up crooked. I also made the mistake of applying the main decals on one side  (which are seperated into two) rear first, in hindsight the front decal should of been applied first as allowed better alignment of the cats head, I didnt make the same mistake the second time (The door cloased side is the correctley applied side). Now painting? Well there was absolutley no colour guides in the instructions and only basic guide for the outside so I was able to find an airfix manual and used lots of reference shots so get her finished.

Now for the pics. Nice winter day here in tassie so I thought I'd take it outside for the photoshoot with the wonderful river in the background just right for a maritime chopper

First shot, soor open side, you can see the lynx head should be lower on the door, and yes I did paint he door/window frames just the light from behind makes it look otherwise

Oops forgot to paint he wipers, later Embarrassed

Propeley aligned lynx decal on this side, 635 not so, One of the one I had problems with.

Konigwolf13 Bow Down beautiful work !!! and background too YesYes I am totally impressed with the decal work you did on the Lynx, that had to have been a nightmare to get right. Hopefully my chopper will come out half as well as yours has.

Well guys I have been fighting me hard not to throw the Avenger in the trash can, but I have picked it up again and went to take some WIP pictures and found dead batteries in the camera Bang Head. Figures dont it. So they are charging now and I should be able to get a few pictures up tomorrow.

Ok guys here are the promised WIP pictures of my Avenger. Actually looks like I just may beat this kit after all, as now she is ready for the paint shop. I will be using the 3 tone blue paint scheme on this one.

I didnt get tricky with this build as I will consider myself lucky if it turns out looking like a TBF and not a mess.

Thanks Julez72 it has been much more than a putty fight, I cant tell you how many times I had to keep from tossing this one in the trash can. I also did some searching in the internet today and found her BuNo along with a brief history, seems ole 309 got around quite a bit. She served in the Canadian Navy as a subkiller. Anyway I will post the history along with the finished pictures. Hope to have some paint on her in the next couple of days.

Yup thats a Stuka in the back ground Big Smile My brother and his son invaded my mancave and are building models. The Stuka is Chris's first, unfortunately he hasn't had much chance to work on it of late because of work. I posted their builds in the Aircraft section under Mancave Gets Invaded. I wish they had a emoicon with buttons popping off as I would surely use it, I am really proud of their builds. Chris is 33 and his son just turned 13. Oh geeze now I am braggin on them Embarrassed Embarrassed

I can imagine Randy, those molds do look old....Knowing me i would have trashed it and gone for the AM kit, kudos to you for not letting it beat youYes

Ah yes the Stuka and the Hurri, i visited that thread and you should be proud, i can't wait till my 9 year old boy starts building, i don't think at 9 he's ready for a very sharp hobby knife just yet so i buy him 1/72 prebuilt kits to play with and he certainly has the same imagination i had as a child so i guess i't inevitable that he will build in later life....Like your brother and nephew he also has an experienced mentor to guide him which will help him greatly when he's old enough to get stuck in....I first joined these forums back in 2004 to 2006 and my skill level soared once i was exposed to experienced modelers, before then i didn't even know how to put a wash on so your invaluable advice could cut years of trial and error off.....Well done againYesYesYes

Julez72 thanks for the comments about my brothers Stuka he really is doing a good job. In fact he is ready to squirt some paint on it this weekend so there will be a few more pictures in the Mancave thread. My nefew fell in love with a 1/48 B-25 his Dad picked up at the hobby shop, I only hope we can keep him from frustration while building that one.

So guys heres a teaser WIP for ya, not quite finished yet I still have a few odds and ends to clean up before I can call it finished.

Hey guys I am calling this TBF-3 Avenger finished..................finally. I want to thank you all for the encouragement I got along the way and I cant forget our fearless leader Kermit, aka Richard. Something else that kept me from tossing this kit was about 3 weeks ago, I decided to check on markings and find out where this aircraft was during her service. What I found was quite interesting, this ole girl got around some.

The Rocky Mountain Wing's TBM-3E Avenger original logbooks show that it was accepted by the US Navy on June 1, 1945 at the Norfolk NAS and assigned to the VT-75 Squadron - the "Fish Hawks". It was transferred in 1947 to VT-82 Squadron - the "Devil's Diplomats" and Naval Air Reserve Training at Los Alamitos in southern California.

In 1950 it was lend/leased to the Royal Canadian Navy with only 546 total hours flown. As with many other American aircraft, the Canadians renamed the the Avenger type to become the Tarpon. Our aircraft was part of 125 TBMs to be converted by the Fairey Aviation Company of Canada, Ltd. to "modern" anti-submarine warfare roles. These aircraft received an extensive number of ASW modifications, including improved radar, electronic countermeasures (ECM) equipment, and sonobuoys. The modified Avengers were then re-designated AS-3. The upper ball turret was replaced with a sloping glass canopy (seen at right) that was better suited for observation duties. The observer was thus seated facing forward.

TBM 53503 flew in the RCN 881 Squadron from the carrier HMCS Magnificent and marked as sub hunter "ABK", "AB*P" and later "315" as their numbering system changed over her years of duty. She also flew in this role as part of the flypast for the newly coronated Queen Elizabeth II's Royal Navy Review at Spithead on June 16, 1953. TBM 53503 is documented as being Struck Off Charge on January 1, 1958.

After her RCN military career ended in 1958, TBM 53503 was an aerial insecticide applicator from 1963 to 1970 for the Simsbury Flying Service in Simsbury, CT as N6583D. Acquired by the CAF in 1970 where she was painted as VT-10's "white 82" with a tri-color Navy scheme for the CV-10 Yorktown, but still lacked the characteristic dorsal gun turret. She flew with the CAF Ghost Squadron until 1981 in this configuration. During this time, her movie debut can be seen in the first five minutes of the movie Close Encounters of the Third Kind as directed by Steven Spielburg - hint: she is the one whose engine runs!

From 1981 until mid-1985, the Avenger sat outside in Arizona waiting for her next duty assignment and in desperate need of repair and maintenance on various systems. A new CAF Unit, the "Rocky Mountain Squadron", was formed in Grand Junction Colorado in 1981. This unit petitioned CAF headquarters for the TBM's reassignment to them in 1984. On January 17, 1985 TBM 53503 was officially assigned to the new squadron. She was flown on a ferry permit from Mesa, Arizona to Grand Junction, Colorado in that February to begin an extensive restoration lasting over four years.

By July of 1989, she was once again "ready for duty" - complete with the installation of the dorsal gun turret, and a new paint scheme - that of a TBM assigned to VT-84, also known as the "Wolf Gang" squadron, aboard the USS Bunker Hill, CV-17. This squadron was the first to attack Tokyo on February 16 & 17, 1945 and the colorful yellow cowling was adopted to enhance identification as "friendly" when returning to the fleet from their raid.

Her first CAF AIRSHO was in Harlingen, Texas in 1990, and since has been on the airshow circuit promoting the goals on objectives of the CAF. The Rocky Mountain Squadron grew to obtain official CAF "Wing" status.

Anyway I hope you dont mind the history as I said I found it interesting. Here are the finished pictures I did have some fun taking them and hope you like her.

Had to show off my first figures ya know

One with the motor running for ya.

And this next one is for our MIA Fearless Leader Kermit or maybe it should be AWOL ?? Clown

AWOL?? Awol...?? Moi?Angel Never!

LOL... Managed to get myself some dial up internet here at the cabin. It takes forever to load up a page with all the pics but at least i can keep track of everythingSmile

Vetteman, i know how much this build has cost you headaches and seeing this build finished like you have done is simply stunning. What started out as a bad fitting old kit turned out gorgeous. Well done my friend! The three tone came out better than mine and the added crew only enhances the whole thing. Three cheers for you buddy! Love the fading on the wings in the second pic too.Smile

The research/ history part of the hobby is at least as much fun as the build itself for me too. It only makes you want to build a certain model even moreWink

Can't really download and upload on this crappy connection but i will add your build to the front page as soon as i can.

Did i hear someone say helo.....?Whistling
