tamiya acrylics delayed once again

They are going to lose a lot of business if they keep this up.

I may switch to Vallejo Model Color if this keeps up.

i have collected a load of MM enamels and acrylics over this time. at this point i'll stick to MM. 

I am sticking with acrylics as enamels are not worth the hassle of disposal and I can wash the screen in my spray booth with Windex or Simple Green, rinse it, dry it and use it again. With enamels I would be throwing it into the landfills.

i just hate the fuses them give. only if MM made more colors in their acrylic line but i have a feeling they won't because a lot of people aren't fans on their acrylics. 

I've used Tamiya acrylics for years. Now that I can't get them I've switched totally to MM acryl.

I like the tamiya primer but I have been replacing with MM and have no complaints....

It doesn't matter to me which paint I use as I like a challenge.

If I had to switch from Tamiya it would either be Model Color from Vallejo or MM Acryl.

Just last week stocked up on a bunch of Tamiya paints I was running short on. Seems the demand for it way up here is far exceeded by the supply. Still plenty to go around, even if I had to drive two hours each way to get it.

Whats the hassle of disposal with enamels Mike? Use the bottle or tin until the paint is all gone or dried up. Throw it away afterwards in either case. No hassle involved. I airbrush in my garage with the big door open so no spray booth required.

I use a spray booth and the enamels ruin the air filter over time. Also I use lacquer thinner to clean up and it stinks to high heaven.

Yes I could use enamel thinner to clean but I find enamels a hassle overall with longer drying time, etc.

I can spray acrylics, cure the paint in my drying booth for a couple hours and be ready to apply Future for decaling. Plus any overspray in the booth or spills can be cleaned with Windex, Iso alcohol, Simple Green or Formula 409. Simple Green is even biodegradable. I can also clean the airbrush in my ultrasonic cleaner with some Windex and water in it. You can't put enamel thinner or lacquer thinner in the ultrasonic cleaner unless you want a possible explosion. 

Mike, those are all things I do not have or use... no spray booth, drying booth, or ultrasonic cleaner. Just rags, pipe cleaners and brushes for use with my cleaning chemicals. I don't think that the curing process really needs to be sped up. A day does not make a difference to me. My luck is when I speed things up, bad stuff happens. Overspray in my work area is not a problem. Yes the lacquer thinner does have a strong odor, but in my work area with its constant prevailing onshore breeze, and my garage door open to where it catches that breeze nearly every day of the year, the odor is rapidly carried away. Mother nature works well with me there. I know we must all adapt our techniques to match our working envornment. In mine they can take my enamels when they pry them from my cold dead fingers...

so just release the primer.....

if your talking about the primer in the can then yeah, it's already out. so is the one in bottle. their lacquer thinner is out also. 

They should just slap one of those universal poison symbols on the side of the bottle and ship it.  There's gotta be some left over Mr. Yuck stickers someplace.

Model Master has a surface primer?  What I saw at the store in MM was white primer acryl paint.  I was not sure if it was a paint to replicate what primer looked like, or if it was in fact a surface primer.

they make a surface primer in acrylic and enamel. they have a color called "primer gray" also witch isn't a primer.

I`ll tell you one thing Gents, if the price of these paints, all of them, gets much higher, I`ll be figuring out ways to use craft paints. Tamiya acrylics @ $2.35 per 1/3oz bottle and MM enamels @ $ 3.85- 4.00 per 1/2 oz bottles are about to price me out of the hobby! Craft acrylics are about 2 bucks for a 5oz bottle with a vast array of colors. I think it`ll be a big PITA matching up colors to the model paints but very do-able. My Mom has a storage bin filled with craft paints and I`ve been eye-ballin` them...I feel an experiment coming on.....

Those craft paints are garbage. Paint is not that expensive and a bottle should paint a couple of models.

Tell me, how many kits do you have in your stash?

I am still a noob, but the guy that got me started suggested using artists acrylics in the tubes.  I thin it with Windex, and have had a good time with it.  No question that my interpretation of olive drab may not be the same as Tamiya's, but that doesn't bother me, I am much more concerned about learning how to get a good paint job than about having the perfect color match.

I have around 300 kits in my stash. I buy  my model paints mainly from The Beachcomber, a collectibles store with a hobby shop and they`re the prices he charges. Sometimes I pick up MM enamels at AC Moore or Michael`s...4 bucks a bottle or the Haymarket Toy shop on Long Beach Island...around the same prices as the rest. I could buy them on line but by the time you pay  S/H , it`s about the store prices. Eight bucks will get me a quart of enamel paint at Home Depot and one oz at the hobby shop...bit of a ripoff maybe?

Paint isn`t that expensive? Sorry you don`t believe and maybe where you are it`s not ,Mike, but here in NJ it`s exactly what I just posted. Believe me...I can stretch a bottle of paint for more than "a couple" kits...it`s becoming a must with those prices.

The reason I asked how many kits you have was to put things in perspective. If you had a lot less kits you would have plenty of money for paint.

I agree that model paints and any specialty paints for that matter are overpriced per ounce but for the amount we use it is nothing in comparison to the money we spend on kits and resin upgrades, etc. etc.

Green Thumb said craft paints are "crap"...his opinion. Again, properly thinned they work great...my opinion...used them through my A/B for school projects but haven`t tried them on a model yet but will soon. I`m just tired of getting gouged everytime I turn around, in my hobby and everyday life. I feel good when I save a couple bucks and if that seems like "cheaping out"....I`m fine with it and have a lot of good company around here....

Thanks for the compliment (I cheap out whenever I can. I don't buy aftermarket, and most of my kits so far are Revell or Monogram).

I love it! Buying enamel by the quart.  Now, have you ever tried that with acrylics?
