Nix the smileys

Is there a way to shut off all those smiley faces etc or at least block out the (ab)users? Really getting annoying to try and read through what could otherwise be an interesting topic.

Thanks,
Kevin Keefe

i like the smileys.  They help convey expressions/meanings that are difficult to gain over just text. True, some people might need to lay off the number of smileys they put in their posts, but why take it away from everyone else?

Yeah... I don't think we should do away with smileys altogether since they provide an important tool to indicate tone where none other exists.

HOWEVER, I'd agree that there are some members on this forum who could dial it down a little. It ain't a smiley competition, folks...

Personally, I'm immune to the smileys, but I would love to see external links opening new windows.

I understand that some may like them, I've used the FSM specific ones from time-to-time as well but, the external sourced ones that jump up and down and do all kinds of distracting things and placed in between what seems to be every other couple of words, to me is extremely annoying. I'm just wondering if there is a way that I can shut them off somehow from my profile end... not meaning to interfere with what others may find 'enjoyable'. Once-in-a-while is ok and yes, sometimes funny... I can certainly live with that.

Thanks,
Kevin Keefe

I'd like to know what thread is being cited here...I don't believe I have seen one yet that is so overpopulated with smileys that it has caused frowns...

I'm curious now...tell me which thread or the next time I post I will include a zillion smileys...

And try looking through your forum settings in your profile page, might be able to do it from there.

Okay. let's try this.

Whenever I'm accosted by a comment that's overloaded with a bunch of Censored smileys, I scroll through that post and ignore it.  For whatever reason, the smiley addicted poster feels the need to inflict them on innocent readers.

Fine.  Just skip the posts with the collection of lame and unneeded smileys.  No one is forced to suffer through them.

Guys,

Based on the fact that the smileys were missed when they weren't available, they shall remain available. Personally, I agree with Owlsign that they can be a way to provide context or emotion in an otherwise emotionless medium.

Minimortar: I will check to see if there is a setting you can use to turn them off.

El Taino: When you insert a link into a post, there should be an option to have it open in the same or a new window. It's under the drag-down menu in the link window. One caution: It may not work for users for have pop-up blockers installed.

Cheers, Aaron

Thanks Aaron, I'm aware of that feature and I use it all the time. But other fellow members either don't know about it or just don't use it. Many times I click on a external link and end up clicking other links on the original link. I have to hit back several times. Many times I end up leaving FSM without even noticing.

Have a good day.

Thanks Aaron. I couldn't find any settings under my account area to block the external smileys or the (ab)users. That's why I asked here.

Again, I have no problem with the FSM site specific smileys. They do sometimes add to a topic/reply.

Thanks,
Kevin Keefe

Back to the topic at hand...

I looked under "Edit Your Profile" for anything like "Enable emoticons" but didn't find anything.  If I can find a flag for it, I'll post back here.

You would think that it would be something configurable; in every other forum I belong to, it is (except for HyperScale's, which is a pretty bare-bones forum anyway),.

Best regards,

Brad
