Thanks Eric.

Well, today was IT. Yesterday afternoon we dropped my son off at the recruiters for his next stage in life to begin. This morning we went to the Los Angeles MEPS to watch him take his oath of service. As of now he should be on his way to Lackland AFB and a whole new world for him.

Stik, he picked a good time to go to San Antonio - not too hot during this time of year. My son went there during the summer of 2006, and it was "cook eggs on the sidewalk" HOT!!!

Regardless of the branch of service, it always gets to me a bit to know that another citizen has opted to serve their country - voluntarily. Makes me proud, even if it is another's child.

Hope he gets his first choice on his wish list.

When is his projected graduation date?

Late to the party but this just proves the adage that the fruit doesn't fall far from the tree. You must be very proud. ( I GUESS the Air Force is acceptable ). Semper FI.

Yeah, not too bad even if he is Chair Force.............Wink

They grow up so darn fast anymore. My oldest is a ODS vet, Navy Corpsman that got assigned to 6th Tanks.

Your son is now entering a new chapter in his life in the military. No question he will do well and inspire others. I wish him well and God speed.

We were all pretty misty eyed, although for me it was stronger yesterday. His baby sister did not want to stop hugging him. I was whisked away by the recruiter at oh dark thrity when it was my turn 30 some odd years ago, so I did not have the same sort of send off like today as he did. I do hope he has a safe adventure ahead.

Yeah, I remember being at the airport and my mom crying like a baby. I just looked at my dad with that look "like please go". Your son has joined a fraternity of brothers that will always be there, no matter when or where. God speed to your son.

Hi Stik! Sorry I'm a little late to the celebration but I wanted to offer my congratulations! I think others here have said it better than me but I wanted to offer up my thanks to your son for keeping the rest of us safe. I, too, earned my Eagle rank way back when but I never had the grades to get into the Air Force Academy. All my best to your son and your rightfully proud family! Eric

Stik, since I'm not going anywhere real soon. The sound quality in this forum will be on a high end level. I figure your locker room became a very boring place when your friend transferred out. In my lifetime I've only spoken to generals during inspections and I don't trust politicians, but the generals I spoke of have been commemorated by the Army as some of their best. i.e. General John J. (Blackjack) Pershing and General of the Army Douglas MacArthur. So their statements regarding the US Marine Corps must be true. So what I hear I take with a grain of salt, and if I can't believe my own eyes then what is there to believe.

Model Man and Havoc, thanks. He is a good kid and I think this is just what he needs to get him going in life. I run into so many of generation at my work who are truly already lost causes.

Tiger, you remind me of a co worker I have known for 20+ years and whose locker was by mine for much of that time. Boy the place sure quieted down when he transferred recently to another assignment. Now in my service time I never did any hobnobbing with generals, and the few I did come into contact with up close gave me the same impression as the politicians that I have come across in my time in law enforcement- believe none of what you hear and only half of what you see...

And don't tell those cult members that they are part of the sea service... the Navy ;)

Yeah we "Marines" know we're part of the Department of the Navy; the MENS Department of the Navy. Yes it is hard to be humble when you're one of the worlds finest.Wink

Isn't ironic that so many Army Generals have commented on how they wished the Army was more like the Marines.

Thank you again guys. Apparently the Air Force does things differently... he puts in for one of nine MOS's, and the Air Force has a tenth option based on his ASVAB scores.  He will find out what MOS he will go off to school for during basic. Supposedly there are interviews involved and such. He has in for mostly mechanic type stuff, but also for a few aircrew positions as well.

Carlos,

The Army and Navy are the only true "Armed Forces".

The Marine Corps is a cult.

The Air Force is a corporation.........

A bit over 2 years ago, my son made me very proud by earning his Eagle Scout rank in Boy Scouts. Now he has done so again today by enlisting in the US Air Force. Due to his being an Eagle Scout, he is awarded the rank of E-2 at the time of enlistment. So early next year he is off for Basic Training and a tour of duty with the Boys in Blue. Maybe I can get some good reference materials on modeling inspiration once he is in his MOS.

That is OUTSTANDING news, Stik! What's his MOS gonna be (not sure if they call it an "MOS" in the USAF)?

My youngest son was in the USAF for 5 years as a dental technician. His wife is still in, and doing great. She loves it. I'm sure your son will to, especially with a military dad!

Congratulations, soldier!

Hey, Stik - How good is that? Eagle Scout and proud Airman in the USAF, ya done good in raising him. Four Eagle Scouts in my family, Dad and all three sons, a tradition I'm happy to see is carried on today.

Congratulations to you and son, I hope he'll fully enjoy his time in service, big thanks to you both.

It's funny, how despite all their protestations, they can't hide that they actually respect what their parents gave them. Good job mom and dad.

Thank you Wayne. I had always hoped that he would serve, but never pushed him towards that. His choice to do so at this time makes me more proud. He could easily have stayed here at home, going to school and working his regular job for the next several years.
