Hi Roosta, I can't remember exactly how much I paid from DixieArt, but I can check when I get home tonight. They did ask me to confirm the order (inc shipping) via email, which was a feature, I really liked. Overall they were great to deal with and I would buy from them again anytime. The only slight negative was that they don't exactly move with the speed of a thousand startled gazelles when responding to emails.

Sushi, rule No1 when using pastels is to make sure you have chalk pastels, not the oil type. Oil pastels don't work all that well on a model (don't ask how I know this ).
For me I use the combination of techniques to weather my models.
1. Paint, using various shades of base of the base color and post shading the panel lines to give a worn or used look.
2. A gloss clear acrylic topcoat, Tamiya Clear, Pledge One Go or Future.
3. Decals
4. A second gloss clear acrylic top coat over the decals
5. Oil wash using artists oils thinned with white spirit (turpenoid to the yanks) in the panel lines
6. A clear flat topcoat, Pollyscale clear flat is my weapon of choice here.
7. Pastel chalks for panel coloring and staining, exhaust stains and gun stains.
8. Final flat coat.

Can anyone give me any helpfull advise on weathering technics. I've bought some pastel chalks for the project, do I need anything else ? Will the chalks do the panel lines or is a wash better ? If you use both technics which is first ,the chalks or the wash?

P.S Finially bought the new Hasegawa Frank 1/32 yesterday , can't wait to start it must buy that airbrush

That's the brush I got. Are you going for the medium tip? I got mine form Bear Air & shipping was ~$40 although I did get a bunch of other goodies included in the package (hoses, quick-release attachments, paints, cleaning brushes, etc).

I've decided to go for a Badger 100LG Medium instead, now i've just got to decide where to buy it from
Bear Air or Dixieart.

Darson how much shipping did you pay from dixieart, and did they ask to confirm your order inc shipping?

I already know bearair does that so I'm trying to figure out which one will be cheaper to ship to me in tassie.

Also is there anything else I should get with it?

Some progress pics on the Mirage. Just painted the camo on the weekend. Apologies for the crappy pic quality. This is SAAF scheme. The Eduard guide has sand + earth but every reference pic I could find had sand + green. This is just painted, no weathering or clear coats yet.

Masked up with Play Doh. Not a good idea in retrospect as the SAAF camo is too busy for this technique. I was tempted to leave it like this as a work of art.



The proboscus is quite a detailed shape & I got sick of the kit part breaking off so I put some brass rod in a Dremel & turned one out. Quite pleased with myself on that one. (I don't like adding them later as smoothing the joint stuffs up the paint job.)

ROOSTA, I don't want to enter the great which ab is better debate, but as a former Aztek owner I wouldn't get one again. These airbrushes are nowhere nearly as bad as some people make out, but IMHO you would do better going for something like a Badger, Paasche, Iwata, Olympus, Tamiya (rebadged IWATA), etc, etc...

BigKahuna, I bought my Iwata from Dixieart in the US. The price (even including the shipping) was significantly cheaper than anything I could get here in Aus. I think from memory I paid all up, around $250 for mine with some extra bits thrown in. This was about $100 cheaper than I could find the same ab here.

Bandha, I had a happy shipping experience as well the other day. I bought the AMTech Folke Wulf Ta-183 from Squadron for $39 Aus (including shipping) and it arrived on my door only four days after I ordered it

Sushi, when adding images to your sig don't forget to look at the guidelines for sigs which appear as a sticky in a few of the forums.

The Peak is made by the same place that makes Iwata & is apparently a terrific airbrush. Concerns would be that parts can only be obtained from Bear Air, no local distributers.

Where can I get the Iwata Eclipse here in Perth?
And how much does it retail for?

I heard it's the bee's knee's of Airbrushes.

Try Bear Air for airbrushes. Shipping is not the cheapest but it works out to be very competitive with local suppliers & you can include some extras that aren't available here. I've always found them excellent to deal with. Excellent range incl. Badger, Iwata, Aztec, etc & their own Peak brand. http://www.bearair.com

On the shipping topic, I recently got a shipment of resin & decals from Meteor & the good thing about them was that they shipped US Post, so it was only $8.50 shipping rather than $40 or $50. Still took only about a week to reach me.

I'm looking at buying my first airbrush, I'm looking at fronline hobbies atm, I want something at around the $150-$180 range for the airbrush and $100-$120 for a cheap compessor.

I see the Aztec 470 AZT-4704G model is $150
or theres the
Paasche H or
Paasche VL

or maybe I could pick one up from ebay or even an overseas store?

Can you get a cheap compressor from Kmart for these?

Darren: I see that you were asking about compressors in another thread, I fully agree with you proposal to chase one of the home workshop types, it a better invesment that a hobby type. If you haven't purchase one yet check out Kmart or bunnings hardware, they usually have them for around $100, dónt forget to get a moisture trap also. I have used Aztec airbrushes now for quite a few years and am quite happy with them, but airbrushes are like any other tool you need to find one that suits you and develop the technique to use it to your satifaction.

My cousin's kid flys herc's w. the regular trip over there. He's training in the US at present but could be a possibility for some courier service.

I'm not in the Regs, ARes or GRes, however I'm in the Australian Army Cadets at the moment as a Cadet Under Officer. Looking to perhaps join the Army next year as a helo pilot.

But the number of Aussie modelers really has hit a high point from where I'm sitting

I'll get round to making a head count one of these days, gotta be close to a total takeover!!!!!
