Finally got off my arse, cleaned out the garage and swore I'd never leave my unfinished joys to the clutches of the evil dustmites ever again.

I build em all. Planes, tanks, ships, subs, figures etc etc. Watchya call a regular all rounder, eh <lol>

Bow [bow] Welcome aboard Stephen. I'm in SA at the moment but WA is and always will be home.

Quick question to all, how many current and / or ex Servicemen here. I'm ex Army and got into building models as part of a lifetime interest in all things military.

Cheers

Sign - Welcome [#welcome] Welcome Steve. BoB seems to be a bottomless well for modellers, lotsa fun.

Just found found out a bit of interesting familiy history, it seems my grandfather was credited with shooting down a Fokker triplane in 1918. His Camel was shot down by ground fire in June of that year & he spent the remainder of the war as the kaiser's guest, which I knew, but the triplane is fascinating news.

Sign - Welcome [#welcome] aboard David, welcome to the forum. Modeling since Oct 4 eh, good for you, what are you working on at the moment?
Airbrush choice is one of the most hotly debated topics on the forum as you will probably discover. Personally I use an Iwata HP-CS (which I love) that I bought from Dixie Art in the US, even with postage it was cheaper than buying locally. Although you will be equally fine with any of the major brands mentioned such as Badger, OMNI, etc. Previously I owned an Aztek which as Bandha pointed out has a nasty tendency to spit at times. If your budget will stretch get yourself a compressor from you LHS (local hobby store), you will never look back and it will work out cheaper in the long run.

Celestial, sorry no can do at the moment. SWMBO would skin me if I bought anything else at the moment.

John when I read “perpetually agitated expression" I had to laugh, welcome to management mate Smile [:)]

Cheers

Hi David, as far as an airbrush goes you'll get just about as many different opinions as there are modellers. To make your life easy as far as cleaning, reliability and quality value for money I reckon you couldn't go past the Iwata HP-CR Revolution for starters. You should be able to pick one up for around $170.00 in Oz. There is a learning curve involved with beginning to use an airbrush but starting with a quality tool like this will make your life a lot easier and you'll get up to speed a lot quicker with results you wouldn't believe you were capable of. Many beginners get caught up with sales hype about selections of nozzles you can change for this job and that job and fancy wooden display boxes etc. but that's all it is ...hype! A good airbrush does not require nozzle changes to do a very wide range of modelling jobs. If your budget can stretch a still more, the Iwata HP-CS Eclipse would (in my opinion) be the way to go (around $240.00), you'll probably never need another airbrush for anything in modelling. People say the spare parts for Iwatas are a little expensive, well I have both these brushes and I couldn't tell you about spare parts because i've never needed any for either of them. As you can tell I am an Iwata fan, but, they are, in many modellers estimation the best engineered, easiest to use airbrushes out there, bar none. Other high quality, value for money brushes you should try to look at include the Omni 4000 and the Badger range as many modellers also swear by these. Jump onto the websites of these manufacturers and have a look at what they offer. Check out the airbrush forum here by doing a forum search on the airbrushes I have named and you can read hundreds of posts regarding these airbrushes from some very experienced users. If I can give you one piece of advice it would be to make sure you do some research before you buy as it will pay you back with a tool that is a joy to use and not a source of endless frustration.

Cheers....Snowy Smile [:)]

I realise that you need a compressor as well but again how do you choose Question [?]

I've used an Aztek for about a year but just got a Badger & prefer it quite a bit. The Aztec has a known tendency to spit at times and I got annoyed at the needles getting rather sick after a few months, despite fastidious cleaning with each use. It gets expensive replacing them. The badger (100LH) has better control for detail work & appears more robust (so far), although it is fussier to clean. I still use both but will always go for the Badger for important jobs.

I got both from Bear Air on the web. Shipping adds a bit, but you can make it worth while be adding on cleaning tools etc., it still worked out cheaper than a local supplier. Compressor: get one with a good regulator & capable of low pressures for Alclads, you can add a 3rd party moisture trap.

Right all you Melburnians,

I'm thinking of doing an order for a kit from Aviapress - http://www.aviapress.com

Does anyone want to order something as well to share the cost of postage? (US$15 per order)

Go on, be a devil.....There's some interesting things there...

If your interested get in touch at celestialsphere@hotmail.com

Hey Sushi

Another Perth modeller!!

Welcome Smile [:)]

I use either a Aztek A470 double action or a Modelmaster S1000 Single action and am happy with both so far, although I am considering saving up and getting an Iwata in from the USA ro see if Jacksns import them.

Stanbdriges have a good range, so it would be good drop in and chat to either Tony or Richard. They would be able to advise and recommend one for you.

Sushi, are you a member of a local club at all?

Hope that helps

cheers

I did a Mozzie NF about a year ago (my first kit since I was of single digit age) & swore I'd never do another without getting hold of some pre-cut masks for the greenhouse. Black Magic do a pretty comprehensive line, though I haven't tried them yet. The Mozzie now gets every colour scheme I'm thinking about, it's actually looking pretty good at present with the RLM green mottle, canopy notwithstanding.

celestialsphere,
I was in Gold Pass as one of the Army Cadets helping people. You might have seen me, I was the junior officer walking around with a cam backpack, bush hat, radio and a perpetually agitated expression. Hope you enjoyed the hospitality showed you.

I'm very jealous. I was planning to travel down for it but work got in the way. Did they have the F/A-18 painted in the Oz flag scheme? Sounds like a drab idea but it looks fantastic.

I'm uploading new pics to my Fotki album from FIghter World at Williamtown. Pics of the following are included, including cockpit shots from each:

John,

I was in Gold Pass Sabre Stand on Saturday. I'm musing that in 2007 I'll go General Admission, save 100 bucks and buy some more kits [;D] [;D] [;D] [;D] [;D] [;D] [;D]
Perhaps a kit manufacturer will have produced a 1:144th C-17 by then (and a decent C-130)!

well hello again guys , been away for a couple of days so sorry for not getting back to you sooner.About myself ? not much to say other than I've started modelling only since Oct 04 so I can only bring my enthuasium and love to the hobby. I model japanese ww2 aircraft in 1/32 scale. I've have built a hasegawa zreo A6M5c, hasegawa Ki-43 Hayabusa and a Doysha zero A6M2 and currently I'm working on a Doysha George .I'm really happy with them.but a long way to go before I start to get to the same level as the photo's on this forum. Need advise on most topics, where to start on air-brush's would be one of them.

Thanks DavidBig Smile [:D]

Hey guys.. Chris in Japan here.. I have been hanging out in the aircraft, helicopter boards of late, and am amazed that 20 pages have been added since my last post in here WOW!..

Anyways.. When I return back from my short trip home to Australia, I am going to get started on my RAAF FA-18A, and the 2 seater FA-18B.. I plan on doing the A in 3 squadron "High Visability". And the B two seater in the 3 Squadron "Low Visibility" schemes..

Anyone done any of these? I would love to see some pics and listen to any ideas that you may have.. I will be doing them both in 1/72 scale and they are the Hasegawa kits!

Anyone know where in Brisbane I can get a good set of decals for both these kits?

Chris in Japan

Chris

I sent you a nice sheet of RAAF F/A-18A decals. Have they arrived as yet?

I am get a tad concerned the plane has detoured to North Korea

cheers

celestialsphere, were you in Gold Pass or General Admission? Also, which day did you go? Just wondering because I was working in Gold Pass all weekend. It was a great airshow, wasn't it? Good to see the future, but a pity we didn't see an F-22 or anything. Oh well, roll on 2007!
