2011 Wrap-up - What Made It Off Your Bench?
Posted by DoogsATX on Wednesday, December 21, 2011 11:03 AM

Alright all - it's that time of year - let's see what you've glued together and slapped paint on in 2011!

Here are mine:

1/48 Tamiya P-47D-25 Thunderbolt - Started in late 2010 after bad decals ruined my attempt with the old Monogram kit. LOVED this build.

1/35 Tamiya M4 Sherman Early Production - First armor build in something like 17 years. Great kit to ramp up on.

1/32 Eduard Bf 109E-7 Trop - First 1/32 build. Overall, very enjoyable build, but the Eduard kit has some fit issues with the upper cowl that, in my opinion, make it preferable to build this one opened up.

1/48 Tamiya DH Mosquito NF Mk.II - Quick, refreshing build with a simple paint scheme. Overall I really enjoyed the Mossie, and look forward to building another up as a Night Intruder probably sometime this year.

1/35 AFV Club 17-pdr Achilles IIc - Awesome looks, but a PITA of a kit. Ejector marks all over the hull. Frustrating turret assembly. Poor location points and poorer instructions made getting a lot of the smaller bits in place basically guesswork.

1/32 Wingnut Wings Sopwith Pup RNAS - First biplane. Absolutely stunning kit. Only real issue I faced was the cowl not fitting over the Le Rhone engine. The rigging was intensive, but far less intimidating than I made it out beforehand. I now have three more bipes in the stash...

1/35 Dragon Panzer IV Ausf.G - Another highly enjoyable build - first use of Friul tracks and first crack at a winter scheme. Apparently LAH Pz.IVs had factory-applied whitewash, hence pretty clean and uniform. Looking forward to a more battered application so I can try the hairspray technique.

1/32 Tamiya Spitfire Mk.VIII - LOVED this kit. Everything about it. Pricey, yes, but IMO it earns it in a way few other kits do.

1/48 Tamiya P-51D Mustang - First full airframe NMF. Figured out a way to create masks for the 352nd's blue nose that got me over my random terror of painting that curve. Overall loved the build, though I think Tamiya's P-51B is the better sorted kit.

1/35 Cyber-Hobby Panzer III Ausf.L "Vorpanzer" - Cracking kit. Lots of fun with this build, though I think the wheel design falters a bit next to the Panzer IV I built earlier in the year. Took home 3rd in its category at the Austin show in September.

EDIT - TWO LATE ADDITIONS!

1/48 Tamiya Focke Wulf Fw 190A-3 - First build post-move. Not my best, but great way to knock the rust off!

1/35 Dragon T-34/85 Mod. 1944 - Think Dragon's kits are fussy and over-complicated? Try this one on for size. Simple, solid kit of a simple, solid tank.

Great looking builds Doog ,and a very productive year you've had. I'm still going to get a few more done before the year closes out so I'll post up mine later.

The only one I completed this year was the AFV Club Stryker MGS.

But like I said on BSYamato's thread earlier today, I've got the Tamiya M2A2 Bradley ODS about 90% complete and the Trumpy Up-Armored BMP-3 about 75% complete.  I'm hoping to sling a little paint on that one Saturday and at least get the base color on then finish the camo while I'm off next week.

Good job on yours!  Looks like you had a heck of a year!  Bow Down

great work, scorpiomikey! I really dig the Walrus - but then the actual walrus (the animal) is one of my favorite animals outside of the cow, and I dig big ungainly seaplanes, so match made in heaven!

p.s. - just a guess, but I think that car is probably a Toyota...Stick out tongue

An hour or three each night after the rest of the family goes to bed...some of 'em still took their sweet time though! The Pup took close to 100 days due to the intricacy of having to build, stop, paint, build some more, paint, etc. It's weird doing finishing work and weathering and stuff before final assembly!

Mike,

I like that job you did on the Stealth fighter!  Got any other pics like that?!  I'm going to start on one as soon as I get done with the two targets I'm working on.

That a great collection there Doogs. I really look forward to seeing them, and in my books, your certainly amongst the top builder on here.

As for me, this year has been the slowest ever, with the exception of the 5 years away from the bench. Only one completed build. academys B-17F.

Next year isn't gpoing to be any better. But hopefully, by 2013, i will be able to get back into it fully.

Thanks slusher. It was a paint scheme i found (with the help of a few guys here) from the have blue project. It was how it was meant to be painted before the USAF said "Paint it black"

Cant find the original drawing of the paint scheme. But the colours i used i think were Tamiya AS-14/15 and 16. I think.

Man,there are some nice models being posted here that I've never seen! It's been a busy year for me, with moving to North Carolina. I haven't been on here as much as I want to be...nice planes, Scorpiomikey, and Doogs--you've had quite some output!

When I look back on 2011, I"m surprised to see that all of my completed models have thus far been car models!

I have finished several of an eclectic group:

The AMT 1965 Lincoln Continental "Never Wuz" wagon--never actually produced, but an option in the box that I couldn't resist. I modified the rear hatch and window arrangement.

I also built Johnny Rutherford's 1975 "Gatorade" McLaren C/D.

Then I built a Boss 351 from the old MPC kit.

I sandwiched in a jeep for Jenn...this is the "Daisy Duke" jeep kit painted as per Jenn. my fiance's desire...

And I just finished a 1971 Mach 1 from the same AMT kit based on the Boss 351 kit previously completed.

And I've still got my Tiger Coelian on the bench--that's NEXT! (back to the battlefield from the garage!)

I plan on more armor in 2011...Big Smile

My dad's a ridiculous sports memorabilia junkie (I totally know where I got my slightly obsessive collecting tendencies!). Has things like a pair of Muhammed Ali's boxing gloves, pair of Gretzky's skates, more signed balls, bats and sticks than you can believe...and he has that exact helmet. His only-ever foray into anything motorsports related, but it's friggin' cool.

Very thankful that - while I enjoy some sports - I never got bit by the memorabilia bug. Way more expensive than $229.

Marc, if you don't mind me asking, why were you going to give up. We have lost a few great modellers from here over the last couple of years, glad you didn't go as well.

That's pretty cool, Doogs! Johnny R was my favorite driver when I was a young doog. I always loved that simple graphic on his helmet. And his Gatorade car, along with that other orangey McLaren!

Slow builders? Ok.....I'll see your slow builds, and raise you an 'incomplete.' My accomplishment in 2011, although it is completely scratchbuilt:

Destined to go in this, and hopefully soon:
