Getting old sucks

   Hey don't worry , try looking for a part , you just know you put it in a certain place and when you look down , it's still on the bench where you were deciding where to put it .

 Carpet Monster Nah , Now Purr Monster yeah ! I have found more lost parts in her tail hair after she walks under my bench and gets the parts stuck in her hair. 

   This is easier than trying the get on the floor and use the flashlight trick .  T.B.

Well, Gentlemen. Let me say this; I've lost my Aunt, my Cousin, and the family dog, and my Grandma in less than a year. I'm only in my early 40's, but it still sucks. My eyesight gave out last year after having perfect 20/15 vision all my life! I can't see anything closer than about eight inches in front of my face (I'm farsighted), and I now have sciatica (numbness standing, or sitting for prolonged periods), arthritis, carpal tunnel syndrome, and of course the memory lapses in remembering words. I'm only 42, but I feel as if I'm 92! I drop everything at least two to three times just for good measure. I don't know how much longer I'll be able to do this modeling without a lot of problems. I just need to finish the things that I started years ago, because if my hand strength gets any worse, then I won't be able to hold anything at MY age! Not to mention the ADD (Attention Deficit Disorder) which only makes life worse. : ( sad face <----

GAF, I think you picked a fun old thread to revive. On your sitting at the bench problem, I just built a 45" or so so high bench. Just occurred to me that would make a pretty good standing bench to build at? Just a thought for you. And I've seen those standing desks advertised on TV lately, maybe something like that?

I have the same issue. I have to use readers along with magnifiers. I hate it!

Try wearing freaking tri-focals for everyday use. For modeling I wear my glasses and the opti-visor from Harbor Freight. What a life saver!

My Father had a simpler system...bare feet.  Unfortunately he would usually find a dropped tack or other pointed object.

Yeah, getting older bites. Physically breaking down is a bummer. But, it's all about the atitude man. I may be more limited than when I was 30 yet, I maintain a positive and vibrant atitude towards life. Yes, I require reading glasses to do much of what I do but, I'm still going strong in 1/72.

Ah, thanks Greg!  I figured no one would complain about an old thread that's topic was getting older! 

A drafting table (if you remember what that is) and stool might be better.  Those are hard to come by now.  I don't understand why more modelers don't use one, especially one with the mechanical straight edge.  Too expensive I suppose.

My work bench is a drafting table from Ikea. I can adjust the height and it's perfect for building models.

Im with you.  Im 45 and about 2 years ago noticed that my eyes wont focus on anything closer than about 6 inches anymore. And yes, I have sciatica pain too, alongside a slip disc  that makes it hard for me to stay sitting for a long period of time.

Ah, the sacrifices we make for this hobby.

I surely don't like reading about you young fellas with sciatica. Any of you doing any stretches? They really help. If you do the wrong ones, they make it worse.

Gary and Ernie, never thought about a drafting table! What a great idea! Of course I remember them, my major for all practical purposes was drafting. (Lines and circles, pencils, templates, compasses .......imagine that. A CAD was a man who liked to chase women back in those days).

I remember taking Mechanical Drawing while in Form 2 in Geelong, Victoria, Australia back in '66-'67.  We were taught to wash our hands at the classroom sink before each class session .  No smudges on that paper!!   It was a fun class for me.

It's interesting when old memories come back. I remember making coffee before class. It was pretty much the most important thing to me and another young fella in the class.

I'll bet that would have been verbotten big time in Victoria! Chance of coffee spills and all.

I follow some stretching stuff I saw from the internet.  So far, okay, but only incrementally helps.  Ive had sessions with a Chiropractor, too.  Hospital PT helped but I was told theyre more for pain management, and its really a pain to drive to and from the hospital.

Youre right, wrong stretches make the pain infinitely worse.
