I'll go out to the garage this weekend and get the Maid out. It's a fabulous a/c, in particular since there are no good kits of her mother the D/H Comet.

Modeling is an excuse to buy books.

Those are used in the Light Armored Recon Battalions of the 1st & 2nd Marine Divisions. Supposedly the 82nd Airborne also obtained a few to supplement their M551 Sheridans. The Marine LAV units saw a good amount of action.

I just looked at Sprue Brothers website and, among others, found this one:

http://store.spruebrothers.com/product_p/trp00349.htm

There is no description of any kind re. where did it serve. Anybody knows?

Thanks...

Well 6 of the 7 carriers from Desert Shield/Desert Storm had Tomcats. USS Midway had Hornets & Intruders, no Cats. Great to see another volunteer ;) I'll get the official thread running next month.

Don't forget the amphibious assault ships that were there, too, which carried CH-46s, CH-53Ds & CH-53Es, Harrier II Pluses, AH-1Ws, UH-1 Hueys, etc., not to mention the 2,000 combat-ready Marines on each, with all of the transport vehicles to carry them. Ships like the USS Saipan (LHA-2), on which I served, and the USS Wasp & the USS Iwo Jima, to name a few. These ships were basically the size of a WWII flattop (around 850 feet long - no catapults, though, as everything on-board was VTOL-capable), and could mount an entire amphibious assault all by their lonesome. Got to witness this a few times while deployed over there. Definitely a sight to see.

I remember those kits. I had the 1/48 F-16A kit from that series.

All sounds good to me. I think I will be in for something on the cheap here. Maybe AMT/Ertl/Esci 1/72 F-15 Desert Storm MiG Killer boxing. Might check out the local shop in the next few days and cruise other possibilities.

Anyone remember the lineup of Persian Gulf Fighters in 1/72 and 1/48 HobbyCr@p, I mean HobbyCraft did at the time? The one remaining LHS still has some of those awful kits in stock....

Ye, I was thinking along the line of ''First Gulf war'' or something similar, but just wanted to leave that up to you. But I do like that Mother of all GB's idea.

Lol! GM I do love that title, but... Bish, you are very correct and I was thinking more along the lines of "Persian Gulf War 1990/1991". Or perhaps "The Mother of ALL Group Builds"? ;)

Regarding DD's comment, sitting her thinking I was 33 when the operation started? No way. This is really quite shocking.

I was working my first technical illustrator job at Texas Instruments, which made the HARM SAM Suppression missiles.

Stik, if I might make a comment here. I know this is being a bit picky, but the name's Desert Shield and Desert Storm are the American operational names for the conflict. The UK called it Op Granby and the French, Italians and Canadians all had there own. I know its often referred to by the US names, but could I be so bold as to suggest one of the other names often given for this war, one that might encompass all the nations which took part.

i would be willing to make multiple nation badges so folks could pick their country (or the country of what they are building). granted this could entail a plethora of badges but my graphics skills need the rust knocked off.

crazy me after looking at the OTS  Toxso SCUD, i pulled out the old DML 1/35 (i have 2). maybe i should actually finish some stuff.Embarrassed

Wayne, definitely ground stuff, including war wheels- soft skinned or armored. This was the largest clash of armor since WWII. It was the swan song for some weapons systems, and the baptism of fire for others. And some of those overlapped. But yes, land, sea, and air subjects from 1990/1991 in the KTO. Which pretty much stretched from the Mediterranean in the west, Turkey in the north, Iran & the Persian Gulf to the west, and Saudi Arabia & the Red Sea to the south. Equipment of all origins:Soviet, Chinese, French, Brazilian, South African, US, UK, German... So many choices

Ye, there is a lot of aircraft. I am starting to lean more towards the chally myself. Stik did say land sea or air further down the front page.

We had access to airbases in Saudi. Prior to Desert Shield there was no US presence in Saudi.

One of the bases for our Harriers was actually a soccer field. Harries don't need no stinkin' runway!! Ooh Rah!!

Now that would have been something to see.

I'll do a little research and see if I can find the name of that field. If I remember correctly, it was named after one of the Royal Saudi princes. And I should state that it was a soccer stadium, not just a plain old run-of-the-mill soccer field.

I will dig out some of my photos of the navy special warfare detachments that were among the very first us units to get there.

Nice purchase Greg. I also have that kit, and will be building it in that ID Guard Weasel unit markings. They were the last US unit to fly the Phantom in combat.

I didn't realise that, and it just makes the retirement markings more appealing  to me.

Nathan, thanks for that info. I hadn't heard of that decal supplier. Always good to become familiar with another aftermarket source!

I think I'll not use the f-4 kit I mentioned for this GB should it come to be, though, as I like the markings supplied with the kit.

I take it you have the new Revell 1/32 Weasel kit? That kit would work, but would need different markings. Either the 35th FW out of George AFB, or the 52nd FW from Spangdahlem.

And learning is usually a good thing ;)

You assume correctly, young wise one. There was a thread here about the 1/32nd beastie being on sale at Hobby Lobby, and in a rare moment of weakness I ran out and procured one. Surprise

speedhunter graphics to the rescue. I believe they have a 32nd sheet of weasels. If not exactly correct markings you could sure piece together some.

Hmmm , I was thinking a recce Phantom but after looking at Devil Dogs list I might snatch up an A-7...
