Hi Tojo 72 ;

I was speaking about this very subject to a neighbor and friend this very morning . He and I have come to the conclusion that they use the distance and the internet as sort of an armor.

Shoot , most folks anymore , don't even look you in the eye when they speak to you .That is if they aren't there with their face stuck in their electronics .

i have a feeling that all said is true .Any behavior like that would NOT be really tolerated in person .  T.B.

Be active on online forums and mail lists much more than about 5 years, or so, and you're bound to be a victim of these tiny-brained keyboard mashers.  I know, I've been attacked before.  Don't stoop to their level.  Stepping away from that forum or mail list for a while seems to be the best way to deal with it.  They'll find another forum to troll on before long, and things can get back to normal.

Aside from reviews, I've done a couple of bare model builds.  It was kind of therapy to get away from the 'must detail everything' builds that were getting in the way of actually finishing a kit.  Build one without paint or any detail that's not contained in the box.  It's very theraputic, and in a way, quite fun and educational.  I concentrated on fit and finish, and actually finished a kit!  I took a kit I got on sale, and one that was common.  It turned out better, and more fun, than I originally thought!!

Try it, just don't do it as a review, so the trolls stay away.  Big Smile

We all forget at one time or another we built our first kit without slinging any paint. I know I did.

I have yet to hear a satisfying explanation for why people act the way they do on the internet.

Because they have no accountability. There are no consequences for their actions/words. I would imagine if they spoke like they type to the person face, there would be consequences.

In a million years they wouldn't speak face to face like that to anyone.

I don't get it either why well-educated intelligent people feel a need to act like two-year olds on the internet...

You can say that again guys!

I enjoyed DoogsATX's builds when he posted here and still use a number of his techniques. I bookmarked his site but haven't checked it in some time though.

There was a lot of griping about the heavy hand of the mods here a year or so ago when they cracked down on a number of people. No complaints from me, this is the kind of stuff that seems to happen whenever a site isn't moderated. Potty 'humour', F-bombs, political and religious/anti-religious rants, etc. Big thanks to Aaron and formerly Tim for keeping this site clean and sane. I don't get it either why well-educated intelligent people feel a need to act like two-year olds on the internet...

Couldn't you just fix the problems after review? Though I guess for something like a misalignment, it would be pretty hard to fix post-glue.

With some tank kits, yes, easy enough to remove tracks, paint the vehicle, detail the areas you want, reassemble. For items that require interior paint, like cockpits, turret or engine areas, it might be tough or impossible. I guess if you assembled a car without gluing the major assemblies, you could finish it as normal.

One of the reasons why I stopped doing reviews or commenting on accuracy issues of available kits is because of the online bullying that occurs like is happening on that blog. It's not like I did it for money or free kits, I did it to help out other modelers and to pass on my observations so they could make a more informed decision. While not as profane or intense as those remarks, the same vibe here is the reason why I delete my posts after several days.

The internet is pretty brutal...I'm glad that FSM is such a great community.

Interesting.Wow,I'm glad that none of my builds or opinions generate this kind of reaction.

Boy howdy, I feel the same about mine. I don't understand the profanity and vulgar language. Most of these guys are college grad, professionals in the work place and should be capable of doing better than that. Shock value I guess. For me, I loose a lot of interest of continuing to read when I come across this language. What do I do about it? I leave for the time being.

But the title does bring some rather horrid visions to mind.

A build without any paint, so one can see any faults and blemishes/seam lines and such. The guy on Cybermodeler does this from time to time with new kits. You mentioned drama, like high school drama, so no, I won't go check out the link. The guy is sort of a male internet drama queen, and I don't like to see that mixed with modeling. Sounds like typical Facebook bs...

Well I don't know, dramatic for me at least, since I'm a fan of the supposed mudslinger. It wasn't all that dramatic. But if you have a pre-existing issue with the Doog's Models, that's fine.

The downside is the build kit is often "sacrificed" unless you are able to deconstruct it and finish it normally. Hard to get folks to volunteer doing naked builds on hot, new releases with kits they purchased out of pocket. Many manufacturers prefer to see their review kits showcased by a skilled modeler as a finished product as opposed to a bare plastic toylike item so you don't get the kit donations you'd like.

Naked Build Reviews?
Posted by Moff on Wednesday, May 11, 2016 9:34 PM

I just read Doog's Models' latest post on his blog about a troll who's been bothering him lately. Doog more or less conclusively unmasks him as a rather famous Youtube modeler (who I happen to be a fan of, so I'm in denial at the moment). It's really rather dramatic, I recommend you read the post.

Anyway, Doog mentions "naked build reviews", something which is apparently a controversy in the modeling world, particularly his modeler critique group. I have no idea what he's talking about, and I was hoping someone on here does. He mentions something about crowdfunding at one point. What are naked build reviews?
