It's either this or needelpoint...might as well be constructive and build somthing "historical"

Besides..... just how many throw pillows can you use ?

P.S. to those of you who suggested getting a wife.... they eventually give up and start "enabeling " you to buy more kits. Heck mine has even bought me a few...... wonder if she's trying to keep me busy for some reason...?

Dont worry about the thumbprint, paint it Rust , and call it "Battle Damage"

LOL Yesterday my wife and I went to Toy Town, just because. Their models were in the back in the storage area but when I asked about them, one very bubbly girl was happy to take us back and show us. I grabbed a Dragon 1/72 SdKfz 9/18 for $5.00. After all The gal was so kind to take us back I had to repay.

So after purchasing a little paint and a new tool earlier this week, I decided... that's IT!  I'm not buying ANY more modeling stuff for the rest of the year.  Going Cold Turkey.

Then, this morning I bought a TBF Avenger model on eBay.  D'oh!

My mum in-law gave me some good advice once that has stuck. Whenever you get a paycheck, pay yourself first so that you dont feel like you're working for nothing.

So I try to keep my purchases around $20. Sometimes I pay myself with supplies and sometimes I buy myself a nice coffee treat. But my wife gives me little greif about it as long as the bills and such are taken care of.

Finding space to work is my is my biggest issue lol.

You should talk to Bronco.  He has 3000 kits inside a semi trailer parked in his backyard.  Its all a question of available space and funds.  I dont think time is even a factor, as a lot of us will be flat out trying to get through our stash in a lifetime.  If he can talk his other half into accepting that stash, you should have no problem.  Mine frowns on occasions, but actually offered the other day to go to the Post Office and pick up my latest acquisition, so I must be doing something right.

The Mrs. loves a bargain, and when I say "half off", she can't help herself, and says "OK

This is a hoot. I need to find a girl like that. Or maybe, just stay single and buy whatever the heck that I want.

Fun thread.

Hey All.  I returned to this hobby back in March of this year and I've been loving it!  But I have a problem now.  I keep buying kits!  And they are starting to stack up a bit.

I know this is a common problem among modelers, but it's really starting to annoy me.  Last week I bought two kits that I probably won't get to until next year.  I was just so drawn by the subject matter that I couldn't resist.   Argh....

Is there a support group for this?    Confused

What are some ways that you regulate yourselves when it comes to buying kits?  Is it just will power?  Does your personal budget constrain you?  A combination of both or something completely different?  I try hard to live within my means, but this hobby is starting to make it difficult.  I'm not going to stop building models. So any advice on how to resist buying kits would be most appreciated.  Smile

Cheers, Mark

Welcome to the ranks of kit collectors!

You're right, it is hard to resist the urge to buy a new kit, or better, a kit you didn't have before, since it doesn't have to be new.  It's fun to look at the kit, and to think about how you want to finish it.  But it's easy to accumulate a stash in a very short time.

It takes a lot of discipline, because it's an addiction, and we fall prey to addictions all too easily.  As addictions go, it's not like using heroin, or drinking, of course.  But the behaviors are on the same spectrum.

One way to kick the habit, if you really want to, is to find others who think and feel the same way, and then to encourage one another mutually.

Over at Agape Models, we have one such group of guys, with our own subforum.  We look on our stashes as a stewardship issue, and so, we encourage each other in reducing or eliminating kits we realize we'll never build.  Guys sell them, some donate them to groups that send kits to our troops, or to kids' groups and encourage the next generation of modelers.

That mutual support can work for any group, too, so, talk to other modelers who are local to you, or with whom you communicate online (like here).  Find other guys who are in the same boat, and make an agreement to help each other kick the habit.

The bigger the government, the smaller the citizen.

Funny tread this one. I never have more then 2 or 3 kits at a time...but I have 2 kids all the time so gotta watch the $$$. 3 kits last a long time as I have limited time to build, maybe and hour or so in the evening and I always chose kits that are as complex as possible AND as cheap as I can find them.

When my mother-in-law, whose dad flew Lancasters in WW2 and, what a coincidance, I built the said bomber, gave me $100 gift card for the LBS, Mrs. Castelnuovo wasn't too impressed. But, she knows that I love modeling althought she may preffer that we move in a house where I would go back to may old hobby of ham radio.

As far as how you stop, you just don't. Resistance is futile, you shall be assimilated etc

But, untill then I'll sniff glue and paint fumes hahahahah

I've been lucky in keeping the expense side of the stash down so far since returning to the hobby. I found a few leftover kits from when I built back in high school that were in storage. Accept for some of the decals, they all were still in great shape. Also, I have a friend that has stumbled upon some kits from time to time and passed them on to me. Most recently, I received the 1/48 Monogram B-17G. The box was opened but all parts were still on the sprues. Of course when I see something I like and it's on sale at HL, I may splurge every now and then.

It could be worse , your stash could consist of one old Tamiya kit and a mostly finished Dragon panzer like mine.

I have been able to keep myself from adding too much to the stash. Mine has been following me around for 30 years until I started actually building them late last year. Couldn't resist the half off sale at Sprue Brothers, though, so 2 more added. I have, however, spent a small fortune on tools and supplies. 2 airbrushes, a mound of paints, pigments, washes, flex-I-files, micro files, clear plastic cement, etc. I have a flexible shaft grinder coming in the mail as I write. Half off at Micro Mark. The Mrs. loves a bargain, and when I say "half off", she can't help herself, and says "OK".

I have the same problem, but I am a bargain hunter. I managed to pick up Tamiya 1/32 P51D/K, 1/32 Corsair bubble top, and 1/48 Beaufighter for $210. But yes, they now sit on my shelf. Too scared to start one.

Lots of sage advice here.  Thanks all.  Smile

Yeah, I'm sure a wife would help to keep me in line.  Don't have one of those though.  Came close a couple times... managed to screw it up each time.  LOL

tempestjohnny...  wow!  I'm not so worried about my small collection anymore.

Don't think of it as screwing up - choose to think of those as 'narrow escapes'. You're much better off, trust me.

This is a great thread thanks. My wife and I were laughing at the post and answers.

I received $20 for Father's day during our trip to Dallas. The money was going to be spent at Eagle Quest along with $25 I brought but I didn't find anything I wanted. When I got home I bought a kit a HL, a few more at Toy Town and still another at our local HS including a handful of paint (I have big hands). I Justified all this because I was going to spend my wife's $20 and my $25 at Eagle Quest and I needed to ship it back so there was even more I would have spent...so I obesely had about $25 more to spend equaling $70. My daughter only sent me a Happy Father's day text but I'm sure they intended one getting me something but I was out of town so there's some more I could spend on myself, on their behalf you understand.

So here I come home with an arm full of kits and a handful of paint but I still had the original $20 in my pocket, hmm. I went to our local IPMS meeting and guess what, there was still more stuff that equaled $20 what a surprise.

So no Mr Stecks I don't think you have a problem. And I usually do exactly what Black Sheep does, although I think she is memorizing my stash when I gone because when I use that excuse anymore she gives me a funny look.

Thats why i keep mine in boxes. Out of site out of mind Wink

I keep telling myself  "I'm not going to buy any more models until I build some from my stash."..so I built 2... and bought 4.  Funny how the stash grows.

The next time your wife asks "When did you buy this kit?", tell her "Oh that? I bought  that one a long time ago."

Works for me...
