Just a little worried about the decals,Questioned someone on Kitmaker who used the same combo,he said they fit perfect so we'll see.

Very nice P-47 in a natural metal finish. Are you using foil or is that paint?  What kit & what scale?  Can't wait to see how it progresses.

Yes, I'm finding some very minor fit issues with the Milspec Blue Angels Decals that I'm using on a Monogram Hornet. There are a few length issues of around 1mm here and there....

The build that just doesn't want to get finished.

I'm working on a 1/700 resin kit of the South Korean frigate Ulsan.  It is an old kit - 1992 or so, I think, when early resin kits were exotic and sometimes cruddy.  Even at that time, Kobo Hiryu kits were not well respected.  I really want to finish it and not just bump it over to the Shelf of Doom.

1) Airfix 1/48 B-57G Canberra - pretty easy build so far although, as opposed to the newer & much-better (so I hear) Airfix releases of the last ten years, the detail is laughable especially in the cockpit and on the entirely free-of-panel-lines horizontal tail stabilizers; it's like when Airfix made this kit the main designer either got fired halfway through his work or he took a three-week vacation and forgot entirely what he was supposed to work on when he got back to the office

2) Trumpeter 1/32 Bf-109-E7 - pretty straight forward so far with not much in the way of difficulties; the photo etch linings for the part of the landing gear wells where the struts lie down has been a bit of a pain because no matter how many times I adjust the PE there's still a strip of it that rises above the underwing surface; thinking I might pull them out and just not use them at all; regardless of that she's all primed and waiting for paint

3) Trumpeter 1/700 USS Washington BB-56 - turning out nicely so far, just primed her for painting last night; I'm torn on using PE because I always have difficulty with small etch pieces; I have a bunch of generic PE railings & ladders I can use but I'm not sure I even want to try given my general lack of confidence when trying to use the brass

4) Academy 1/700 USS Enterprise CV-6 Midway - no problems so far; she might end up as a shelf queen that I work on a little bit at a time every few months though then put away again just because of how much I don't like working with photo-etch & CA glue; I can wind myself up fairly quickly when I get frustrated from making a mistake with PE & CA, and when it happens it takes all the fun out of working on the model

Wow ThanosForever, looks like you have a full plate. I envy those of you who can build multiple subjects simultaneously.

Still working on the very old 1/25 4-4-0 "General" steam locomotive kit. Currently in the scratchbuilding and detail painting phases. Once this is done I'll move to weathering before assembly.

What's on my bench now?

A 1/400 model of the S.S. United States, the paper offering by Modelarz out of Poland. And the Tamiya 1/350 Missouri as well as Nichimo's old offering of a de-Motorized version of the Tirpitz in 1/350. Nuthin New, just more of the darned Floaty Thingies (My Son's Words)

Revell's new 71 Boss 351 Mustang

I don't normally build cars, but I was getting a little bit of burn-out on military aircraft subjects, and this one was released just in time.

Slowly getting the engine put together and got the interior done.  The Revell offering has interior molding for the Mach 1 interior option.  Also gave it a rim-blow horn steering wheel and used a tinned 0.3mm copper beam to replace the baseball bat the kit had as a turn signal lever.

Looks great - 3d decals or is that pit all Tamiya?  I have the 1/48 A in the stash.

Thanks,

Believe me, none of it's very co-ordninated or organized. I just like to build a lot and end up with multiple things on-the-go at any given time. I'm great at starting a project but terrible at finishing, as shown by the three or four others that aren't on my list from above that I have gathering dust waiting for me to get around to weathering them. My little modelverse here is typically best described as an eternal state of scattershot to tell the truth. Embarrassed

3d decals from Red Fox.  This kit is the D.  I'll build more of these for sure.  Besides not much detail in the wheel wells and decals for belts the kit is amazing.  Much has been written on their 1/48 F14's so I won't bore you.  Let's just say your going to love building it.  Thanks for the compliment

The 1950 Chevy 3100 Pickup from AMT is on my desk for the 3rd time.

The first time I tried modifying something and screwed it up beyond repair. So I bought another copy of the kit.

Then I tried out some new paints and a complex paint process, and screwed it up. And I don't feel like dealing with stripping everything. So I bought another copy of the kit.

Now the 3rd copy is on my workbench. I am going through body prep for the 3rd time.

I will not give up. I want to complete one of these.

Oh, and I bought a 4th copy of the kit just to make sure I have it if I screw up again.

Insert wise quote here.

Dropping a lot of cash on multiple examples of the same kit!Just how did you mess up the previous efforts?

Eugene Rowe

Dropping a lot of cash on multiple examples of the same kit!Just how did you mess up the previous efforts?

Forunately the 1950 Chevy 3100 Pickup can be found for $18-$20 if you look hard enough. So it's not like I am dropping $30 or more on each one.

I try to learn a new skill with each build. And on this pickup, I am trying to incorporate 3D printed parts, and I am trying to do some scratchbuilding. More specifically on this pickup, I want to make a hinged hood, shave the handles, fill in some details to smooth the body, and tub the bed for wider tires in the back.

All of my failures were probably fixable. But I look at the time involved fixing versus the $20 for a replacement kit, and make a call. Is it work my time to fix my failure, or should I just start over?

The first failure was choice of filler and screwing up the hood hinges. I wanted to try a 2 part filler, and chose the wrong one. And the hood hinges were too bulky and hit the engine.

Then on kit number two. I got the filler figured out. I got the hinges figured out. But then I fell in love with this lowrider paint. The metalic paint comes in all sorts of great colors and looks amazing.

Well, the lowrider paint is urethane. I tested it on spoons and it burned through all of my go to primers. Then I found that Rustoleum can stad up to the paint. But I HATE Rustoleum.

So I primered the model with Rustoleum. Then applied the paint. But it still managed to burn through the Rustoleum primer in spots. I pushed forward anyways because I thought the clear could hide it since it wasn't too bad.

The metallic paint was too rough because of all the flake. 6 coats of clear and some of the flakes were still causing bumps in the clear. By now there is so much clear on there that it just looks silly.

I didn't want to fool around with stripping the paint. Or figureing our what can even remove urethane. So I bought kit number 3.

This time I am not using lowrider paint. I have figured out the hinges. And I have all the 3D printed parts built, and painted and assembled from the previous attempts. This 3rd kit is really just so I have fresh body panels. Everything else is built and ready to go.

Yeah, buying copies of kits can get expensive. But for me $20 is worth it instead of spending all week, or even a couple weeks, trying to fix something.

Insert wise quote here.

What is on my workbench now?  A mess!  I am just finishing a new paint and airbrush cabinet (not for actually painting) but storage for paints, airbrushes anf fittings.  In the meantime I have woodworking tools mixed in with modeling tools on the bench, to an extent I can't work on models  A pix in a day or two.

1/48 Tamiya P-51B.  Not sure I'm a fan of all the Eduard stuff. Love the IP but the other panels look weird to me.  Pilot is going in the seat so not using the belts.

Thanks,

John

Brought this guy back to the bench last night  I had some issues trying black CA and the solvent that made me shelve it.  I've hosed the canopy up pretty bad trying to get the glass cockpit seperator? installed - ended up pitching it.  But I'm okay with how it's coming out overall considering it almost went in the bin.

Thanks,

John

I've got a couple of 1/48 Spits on my bench currently

My main project is this Academy Mk.XIVe

and while things dry on that one, I have resurrected this Shelf of Doom Child, ICM Mk.VII HF

Both should be done soon...

Hi there!

I have finally settle on my next project, I ordered and received it yesterday. It is going to be Columbus Santa Maria, by AL. I opened the box and everything appears to be there except for paper instructions. They have produced a CD that contains the instructions, some videos on how to make some of the items and a series of photos.

The instructions (about 140 pages of photos in color) looks that are a step by step sequence on how to build the model, but, there is not a written word in any of the instructions.

I guess I will find out how good these instructions are and will report back on this subject. I will be starting a build log on the model and I will title it " The building of the Santa Maria"

Until next time:

Still working on the Santa Maria, I have finished with the deck furniture and now working on the masts.

As for my next project, I may rest on model building for a while because we now have a new addition to the family, our godson is now the proud papa of a baby boy, so I am thinking on building some wooden toys for the baby.
