The grayed out national insignia question seems to continue......

I sent an email to the 91st BG website a couple weeks ago and got a reply today, and here is part of that reply......

    " To our recollection, we have never seen a grayed out national insignia on a 91st B-17.  Our pictures of Man O War II are of the nose art and Tony Starcer painting the nose art.  These pictures do not show the national insignia on this B-17. 

       We are sending your request to all our Ring participants, some of whom are 8th Air Force historians and authors with copious files, and asking them if they have information about grayed out national insignia or a picture of Man O War II showing this part of the air craft."

Seems kinda weird though, given I found this picture

While I never wanna tell a veteran who was actually there that he is wrong I've seen a few instances were I dealt with a veteran who said something was one way and he was way wrong. It happens, I've done it with some of my fellow veterans from my war.

Good thing I'm not applying the markings right now.....I'm just gonna wait out this whole marking situation and see what happens

Thats a cool badge Redraider56 well done. I havent been building a B-17 but I do enjoy keeping an eye on this thread, and have learned some about scratch building here too.

I'm building the queen of the Bloody 100th "My Gal Sal" she flew well over 100 missions. This is an original 1975 kit that the wife picked up for me some time ago. Updates include resin damaged flaps, resin .50 cal guns, and True Details wheels. Weathering at the moment, then a coat of Future and the decals go on....

Welkommen, Red... You can't attach photos here... You have to upload them onto an on-line hosting site like Photobucket or Image Shack... Then when you reply, there's a little "fim strip" icon at the top of the reply widow..

Click on that, paste the URL of the photo you want to post into the box that opens up, then click "insert"...

The only thing you can upload directly from your hard-drive into here is your avatar photo...

Another thing I found that works with pictures is just upload them on photobucket or something and simply copy and paste.   Any picture that comes off an website is able to be copied and pasted on here

Once your pics are uploaded to photobucket, copy and paste the img code.

Never trusted the image code lines... I always right-click on the photo and then copy the URL from the "Properties" window and paste that into the "insert media" box...

Lets see if this works, here are a few photos of the progress....I've gotten all the painting done, next up a coat of Future, and will apply the decals, and panel wash....

Only 8 more days til I'll be aable to resume work on mine.....I decided I'm overhauling the whole thing

I'm interested in the staining on the cowls and top of the wing, Red... Kinda looks like all four engines caught fire at one point or another...

Thanks for the kinds words all. I cant tell you how many hours I have spent studying the staining/paint chipping on well weathered B-17's.... Not sure about all 4 engines looking like they caught fire ......All 4 engines were prone to leaving ALOT of super heavy exhaust/grease running down the top of the wings.. Here are a few good examples

Little back log story. This is my first model kit, after about a 4-5 year hiatus. I had a collection of about 15 WWII aircraft I had built, super detailed etc. 4 years ago my x wife went into my house and destroyed everyone of them while I was away at work. Whats even crazier than that, is that she is the one that was cheating on me!! She's gone, and I have a wonderful new wife, so no worries about that anymore. Anyways I havent had the stomach for it until now. This kit has gotten me back into it. Having a lot of fun with this again. Ok no more life stories.

Good news: I'll be able to resume work on my fort next week

Bad news:  My new plan of action calls for ripping apart the fuselage and overhauling the plane, which isnt too big of a deal, but it's gonna take me longer than expected, adding time on to an already 3 year project
