Is it to late to join this group?

Nope.. This isn't a "formal" Group Build with hard start and finish dates, it's just a B-17 build that's been going on for a while now with no end in sight..

BTW, this build has a "sister" build, starring the B-25 Mitchell...

Hi all, I have been busy through the summer taking care of my mom but now I am back to doing a little modelling.

I've managed to get my B-17 started again and hope to have it completed soon.

Just a heads up to those building a B-17F, I have ordered another set of Little Miss Mischief decals for my other B-17G model Im doing and it comes with the Miss Ouachita decals with it and once I get them in the mail they will be up for grabs. (only for those in the USA, sorry for those outside the USA... ) These are really nice decals and the pinup portion of them look amazing! No asking dibs just yet, as they are still in transit. This way it gives people time to see this post who could really benifit from this set. These would cost a pretty penny and these are not just throw away decals.

already sent B-17 Guy the first set that I had to him, will have one more. These are made by the now defunct PYN-up decals. Very nice IMO. Also this is a freebie give away so please dont offer money. Just trying to help out someone who doesnt want to spend alot of money on a set of decals. These were a limited run. Only requirement to be elidgable to get this last set (last set I have, total production was 300) is you have to be building a B-17F. I do not want these decals going to waste.

Not much too see but painted antiglare olive drab in front of the pilots windscreen. Didnt like how the windscreen itself came out hand painted so I cleaned and repainted with spray after masking and turned out way better. Going to paint the tail in red in the correct spots. Now onto my dilema... Need to paint the flight control surfaces and Im using model master acrylic and trying to figure out how to best replicate the doped fabric look. I think mixing medium flat grey and aluminum to achieve this look is close?? This part of the build is going slow now and I still need to spray the final coat on the wings, give detail to the wings, paint and install the last pieces of glass, forgot to mention the engines, and then after all that do the weathering... In the mean time the Messerschmitt is wanting to be built along with the P-38... And the other B-17 as well. When does the madness end?

Don't over-think it... There's no grey in it either..

The "dope" was just a clear varnish with aluminum powder added. It was applied over a red-oxide dope 9that actually looks kinda brown to me)...   Brand-new, they just look like painted silver... 

On mine, I just painted them with Testor's "Silver" with a couple drops of black added, to tone down the silver,  and then shot them with Dullcoat...  (Note: The left aileron and elevator are "replacement parts" here, taken from a "newer" B-17G, hence the lack of camouflage paint on 'em..)

Then I gave 'em a quick dry-brushing of burnt umber to bring out the rib-detail...  Don't worry about the "fabric" texture... Pretty much everybody that makes a kit with the "fabric" detail gets it wrong; it's far too pronounced... It's almost invisible when you look at the real thing because of the dope, which "fills-in" the texture...

 I added "new" parts in several places on this one, to give it a more "war-weary" appearance..

Got some more work done, thanks Hans for the tip on the flight controls will do on next paint session.

And the B-17 next to the next project (not alot of pieces to the BF109G10 kit but paint work will be fun)

Meanwhile, could ya do something about the size of the Bf109 badge?  It's blowing my screen so wide apart I have to use the slider to read even a single sentence in any thread you post in...

If you're using PhotoBucket or ImageShack, it works well just posting the thumbnail's URL in the signature, rather than the full-size picture's URL..

GB Badges are usually in the 175 x 100 pixel-size, rather than 800 x 500...

Well the B-17F "Betty Boop-The Pistol Packing Mama" of the 390th BG 370th sqd. is under construction! This model holds a special place in my heart, as my Dad often mentioned this aircraft in some of his stories of planes coming back shot up...or not at all. Several years ago I purchased a print of this aircraft entitled "When Prayers are Answered" and had it framed and have it hanging in my living room. Here is the preliminary work I have done so far:

I suppose I can do an update for one of mine. The holidays have taken up most of time so I havent worked on my forts lately. Did a little last night though.

On my fortress III, I used the decals for the squadron code and indivdual aircraft letter, they didnt come good. Fortunatley I only did the left side.

I ripped off the decals and wanted to paint the letters on. So I made the masks, and had to match paint.

What do you guys think of these engines?

Looking good! I have fallen behind on my B-17. I need to get more paint but every time I have time to go to hobby lobby they are closed!! I need more silver foil paint. Plus getting ready for the 109 build coming up.

The D model is looking good, and like the colors on the RAF one!

Hobby Lobby''s normal hours are 8AM-8PM, Mon-Sat, closed Sundays, Christmas Day, &  New Year's Day.. They close early on Christmas Eve and New Year's Eve, @ 5:30...

The engine looks great! The D looks awesome. I want to do one those some day. Is that the Koster conversion kit?

That is the Koster conversion kit. And I'll say it's not easy to do, but that was my first time using vac form that large.

Apparently the entire crew!

Almost the entire crew, anyway... The ball-turret gunner (who was going to be a cartoonist after the war) was trapped in his turret and was going to die because they couldn't get the gear down...  But rather than just give up and let go, the ball-gunner used his imagination (and "magic sketch-pad")  to do this:

Apparently, they also had some pretty good lighting in the tunnel under the flightdeck..
