Me410 A-1: To The Finish! 11/7/10

A brief update, as I'm breaking, for me, new ground.  My pressing off the kit canopy had some serious flaws, so I've decided to make a vacuform- using a female mold!  We can trust Hauptmann Hannah to lead us down this perilous path, can't we?

Gosh, Uncle Chuck, I can hardly wait for the second installment of  " Cast Away! " this first part was real excitin'

I sure hope mom will let me come to next Saturdays matinee.  She usually gives me a dime for a popcorn and a soda pop, ya know.

Excellent work, Chuck!  Aren't Legos wonderful?  So much better than the old scraps-of-wood or half-a-milk-carton methods.  Good for making jigs, too.

amazing as always chuck...i cant wait till sunday night about 7pm to see if you have posted an update yet....

Cool build and amazing way to post It!  I have a question however.  Built a bf 109 yrs. ago as a kid and did it with an open cowling to see the engine and seem to recall that the engine mounts had openings in them to reduce weight where on your 410 they are just depressions.  Did the engineers add material back to strengthen them?  Just wondering.  Keep up the great work!

How did you like the LifeColor?  I've found it's the only acrylic i can do mottling with.  Never had good luck with the MM line of paints.

Anyway, what was the paint ratio of the "scale black" that Brett Green had come up with?

If you're a member of IPMS and can finish this plane by August, you ought to bring it (and your Helldiver) to Phoenix for the convention! Even if you don't enter the contest but are going to attend it, plan to come to a meeting of IPMS Craig Hewitt as a guest the first Tuesday evening in August.

Chuk you didn't make the mold out of latex rubber did you? you should have gone with RTV mold making rubber it will hold the shape of the molded object like your canopy and not fall apart like the mold you just made.

And did you know I think it might be possible to use the master that you would make from the new mold and the new mold itself as a male/female press to press out a new canopy. It would be a new play on the old heat and smash thermaforming technique.

I don't know what Chuk exactly meant, but it could be understood as colour of the weapon (Waffen - weapons or also military service branch, Farbe - colour)

Chuk, I start too worry you might be getting "too smart" on the canopy, but that's just me. I admire your work and enjoy the WIP, so keep 'em comin', have a nice day

Pat, I consulted plenty of photos that showed a solid mount.  There were many variations for all the different engines and airframes- cheers!

Andy, I like the Lifecolor paints just fine- easy to work with, although I did have to frequently wipe the needle tip as paint built up while spraying.  No biggie!  That "scale black" was a roughly- 50-50 mix, but t's an "eyeball" kind of thing.

Hiya, Jim!  By Waffen Farbe I meant a fairly literal translation ( I guess) of "weapon color".   Me no speaken zee doitch.     Thanks for the invites! 

Mikey, I sure did use latex from an Alumilite kit.  It's Type I, and should be Type II- more flexible.  Or, more likely, RTV, as you suggest.  The paln was to make a female resin mold and do a vac from that, as the kit canopy fit well. Read on for the solution!

I sent Fritzi and Hannah on a mission to CMK, who have the only commercially-available vac 410 canopy in their interior set.   They offered to make my next online build a CMK kit if they'd sell me just the canopy, the little cuties.  CMK not only offered me a canopy, but my pick from their catalog- wow!  Talk about being a kid in a candy shop!     Care to take a guess at what it will be?

Thanks for the "scale black" ratio.  I'll give it a shot next time it comes up.

The LifeColor thinner didn't work so well for me, even when adding Vallejo acrylics retarder.  Lots of tip dry.  I read somewhere someone used Tamiya acrylic thinner with the LifeColor paints so I gave it a shot.  It worked PERFECTLY and the tip dried in about 1/4 the time.  Made a huge difference.

Anyway, just in case anyone wants to give the LC paints a try, use the Tamiya thinner.  The colors they have are excellent and the finish is nice and satin-y.

It seems like only yesterday that I saw the start this build  (well to be honest, I did go back through from the beginning yesterday)  and here we are nearing the fiddly bits. 

  Good job with the masks ( I do remember the illustrations from earlier on- must be kinda weird to see them from a users perspective)  I read about them on a UK forum and saw the web site "vewy inter-resting"  might make national markings etc more custom to the specific plane being modeled.

JU 388 hummm? might be interesting to see how you tweak that one too

Chuck: As I understand it, the prototype has framing on both the interior and exterior of the canopy, but the replacement canopy for the model has all the framing on the exterior?

Hey, guys- I'm still alive, just a little distracted.  This little doodle is an entry in fundraiser for an art forum I frequent.  You get a wooden egg and your imagination and go it.   Wheeeeee!

As for the 410, I've pored a new canopy mold- looks much better- just have to pry it out of the vac!  I've also marked out the lines for the rioll cage on the first mold, so things will get back in gear soon.  Had a nice 10-day trip back east, too. 

Baron, good ol' Future is what a use to undercoat my oil washes.  The key is to thin the oils with a mild thinner- the Humbrol stuff is just perfect.
