Some progress to report, not much but a liminal moment...

Yes, masks are on... The wheel masks fit perfectly, but the compound curves of that unique canopy rather defeated Eduard's computer. The fit of the canopy pieces was poor and had to be tidied up with strips of tape, exactly as if I wasn't using masks... Which I could have done weeks ago. Hey ho, I'd still have needed the wheel masks.

Next step, spray the canopy interior gray, which as it's the same gray as all the interior bits really prompts me to open the second kit and prespray all the parts at the same time...

The intakes are a pest, I can see no way to protect the aluminium engine areas and spray the intake cutaways as part of the camo scheme. I'm considering painting them either grey or aluminium... or brush painting them. Anyone have any insights into techniques for that area in this scale???

Foam ear plugs might work as masks.

The plugs can be squeezed down to fit the diameter of the air intakes and then automatically expand to plug the hole for painting.

You would, however, need to trim away enough foam to allow for the engine starter housing on the front of the Jumo turbines.

Thanks, guys, interesting ideas. The division between intake and engine proper is really the junction between the nose part and the trunking parts which carry the starter cones. The perfect solution would have been to spray the nose with the basic camo shade before assembly, that way there would have been a sharp demarkation in the intake throat... I'll do that next time. Another idea just sprang into my mind, a strip of plasticard rolled up and eased into the trunk would spring back and lie against the walls, protecting them, and tissue could protect the rest. if the cone needs a touch up, at least it's accessible. Hmmm... The camo division line falls in the intake region too. Must check refs...
