70gtvert

21 years ago I built the Airfix 1/24 190, 109e and spitfire. Talk about room for details. All won their class back in the day and all are still in my collection, although any 21 year old model will show signs of deterioration. I figure this Trumpeter kit is a far cry better than those. In fact I'm thinking of selling my un-built Airfix Hurricane. I can scratch build parts if need, can even make my own etched parts, albeit out of brass, not stainless steel. I just want to know if I should go with a late version with this kit or the early one it is supposed to represent. Thanks, John.

That is a sharp 190 John and 21 years old to boot! Well to answer your question I would go with the late version.

Hey 70gtvert,

As a builder of the 1/24 K-4 of the group here is the best I've got.......these kits are designed for somebody who wants to build a big kit. That said, the Trumpeter line up has some faults regarding O.E.M. specs as we like to call it in the GM dealership realm. If you want to build this kit you either have to work around what is already there or scratchbuild it. I've already found things on mine that belonged to earlier families of build regarding Messerschmitt. It's a fun kit to build once you get around the ejector pin marks and a few alignment issues (mainly wing to fuselage fit). I will tell you this...build it if you want a 24th scale plane. The aftermarket world is limited in this scale but will yield a detailed plane if some is left to imagination. Have any questions as far as detailing ideas let me know. I've been through hell and back with this plane, Joe

Although I have other projects during the warm months, I still pick up kits here and there for the winter months. Just got a Trumpeter 1/24 109G-6 early, or so the kit says, but the instructions show the small antenna mast, the DF loop as well as the armored glass behind the pilot. All of those seem to point to a late G6. What am I missing here?

Hi mustang,

Thanks for the comments. I'm not a big fan of the PE hinges either. Not sure what I'm going to do with them when all is said and done. Hoping to get some airbrush time tonight. Still working on the Dart, but felt the need to finish something so back to the 109. I have one of the Trumpeter 1/24 kits partially done as well (late G6). Actually I always have several 109's in various stages of completion, but the stash doesn't seem to dwindle. My new problem is that I've really gotten into Emils, where before I preferred G's and K's.

The F-4/B Im going to do will be a fictional scheme. The E-1 will be FW Beese.

Pzl66,

Jeez! You had to ask. Lol. I initially wanted to do a Hartmann plane but I've already done that in 48th scale. Anything other than Hartmanns plane is hard to find for a K-4 especially in this scale (1/24). I've got a couple in mind but they aren't K-4 birds. I've given strong thought to a JG5 crate flown by Helmut Nuemann in Norway. His was a G-14 though. I'm probably going to go with that even though its not politically correct. I'll post a pic of it. It will be difficult I can tell you that

Ok fellas. This is the last picture of my plane without primer on it. Somehow figured out how to seal the exhaust and engine cowlings. I will finish cleaning the surface tomorrow morning and apply primer hopefully then as well. Here goes........

Cool scheme. I don't know what scheme I'm going with yet. I'm sure it's not going to be politically correct but I actually did think about a machine from JG53.

Well I spent around 3 hours this morning with the wing build up and installing the wings onto the fuselage. Pics are as of this morning.

Theuns -  I think that turned out rather well all things considered.  Cool scheme Yes

MUSTANG1989 - Thanks.  It will be painted pretty close to this profile.  Still have some final research to do regarding white wingtips.  Also the lower portion of the engine cowl should be yellow.

regards,

Jack

Hey Tuco,

Your kit is coming along nicely man. I've got the same cheesy photo etch hinge set up on the kit I am building (Trumpeter 1/24 K4) I almost want to do away with the hingepoints and attach them directly to the wing. Looks like your landing gear strut mounts on the wing appear to be a bit more detailed than mine are. Anyway yours is coming along nicely. Oh and by the way your stash is killer and the Dart is awesome. I've liked Hemi Darts and Cuda's since I was a kid.

Theuns

Ok guys, here is my final representation of a 109 F found at El Daba airfield 1942.

It was "white 9" 9./JG 53.

The blue undersides were resprayed in sky blue by # 1 Sqn South African Air Force and the Lufftwaffe markings over painted.

As you might have read it was a real missrable build this and I am glad it is over LOL! I just need to add the pitot tube on the left wingtip, but I am calling it done!

It is also the last time I try to handbrush on a side reg #

Dry fitting is a good thing.  After a test fit of the middle rear flaps, this gave the proper height for the upper and lower wings halves, giving a fairly precise fit at the wing roots.  Still though, ignored the construction sequence and glued the upper wings to the fuselage first and then added the bottom wing.

No one answered the question posed about the radiator flaps, so more digging, along with posting on another forum.   Have learned these flaps were controlled via a thermostat, the openings directly related to the coolant temperature.  The pilot though, could override this system, closing the flaps in order to get a bit more speed if the situatuion warrented it.  So I posed them just slightly open.

Along with stretched sprue on the cowling hinge, also used some to create the seam on the port side intake.  The exhaust shields are fashioned from brass sheet, using both kit parts and photos as a guide. For some gear up detail, carved out the strut mounts in the bay and then added some brass rod cut to lenthg for the swival arm.

regards,

Jack

Lookin good so far Jack. Looking forward to the main coat. What color scheme are you going with?

I do have a bit of a dilema coming up. I am approaching the point where I am going to be building my landing gear. The tires are vinyl so I bought the only resin wheel/tire combo I could which was the G-6 skinny tires. About a year ago I found a manufacturer that offered G-10 wheels/tires in resin. Does anybody know where I could get one of these tire /wheel sets in 1/24 scale??? Thanks for any help anybody can be.
