Hans von Hammer

Well.. I'm out..

The "Von Hammer" Bf109 is junk.. I got a massive dose of silicone-contamination with the paint, resulting in thousands of little "Fish-eyes" on the finish... I don't know what happened, or how (I washed the model to remove any mold-release), but the thing isn't worth saving... In order to remove th piant, I'd have to sand all the surface- details off, since niether brake fluid or  Simple Green will remove it..

*sigh*

I might build the Monogram Bf109E in order to finish the GB, but at this point, I'm too disapointed to care..

Rats Hans!

Ever tried oven cleaner?

Hans.. got any Laquer thinner? try some on a qtip or rag.. wipe it on.. then rub some.. be carefull.. to much can soften the plastic..it might loosen it up enough to wipe off.. then sand it smooth after an not loose the detail..

I use Easy Off oven cleaner, the formula with lye in it (there are 2 formulas, only one with lye) It takes off acrylic, enamel and lacquer and does not harm the plastic. Put it in a tub, spray it down and use plastic wrap placed around it to prevent early dry out. After about an hour and a half, take it under a water faucet and with water running on it scrub the model with an old toothbrush. May take 3 tries or so but it does work.

Thanks for the suggestions.. I might try them later, but right now I'm just too bummed-out about it to care... Guess I need a "grief period", lol..

Meanwhile, I'll tinker with the MonoSchmitt.....

For What It's Worth:

*Sigh*....

I have an idea to save it if it comes to that though.. A diorama of the bird gettng re-painted in the field with Von Hammer's Red...  So it would get painted in factory camouflage first, then partially re-painted with the red..  I can build a couple figures painting it, while Von Hammer, standing next to his Kubelwagen, looks on.. Or even better, pose him personally painting over the Hakenkreuze..

Hans... I don't think you have "fish eye".. I think you have "solvent popping" , this occurs when the first coat is not dry enough, and the 2nd coat goes on to quick. The first coat has not had time to let all the solvent evaporate out of the paint, then the 2nd coat traps the solvent, and then it pops up thru the top coat. You can get this even if you put only "1" coat on.. as a few heavy passes can create 2 coats..

Was this color a gloss color ? was it humid that day? or muggy? rainy ? .etc..?,,, this can aggravate it..

The reason I say, this is that your pops, are very consistant over all the model.. not in a few locations..

I'm gonna Ditto P38 here, looks like a reaction more than fisheye. (I avoid this problem by building everything slowwwwwlyy Snail) May have to sand her down & consider that a base-coat. Loving the red on that machine btw.

Nice!!!

Man, I'm gonna have to go back a dozen pages to get caught up! At this point I'm planning on hitting one of my 1/72 109s this summer, maybe try it as a 2-week blitz - yes, that is "blitz speed" in my world. Embarrassed

Yeah, it was gloss.. Krylon was the brand..

Regarding the "solvent popping", there wasn't a second coat.. That was the first coat, there was't a second one..... Hence my suspicion of "fish-eye" from silicone contamination...  Weather wasn't a factor, my war room is A/C'd so it's pretty comfortable, with low humidity..   You could be right though..

At any rate, I'm walking away from this one for now.. Oh, I'm sure I'll finish it before the deadline, hopefully, but it'll be a couple weeks before I pick it up again...  Otherwise, it'll get "Hammered"...

Love the red color, I assume it is a gloss paint which I hate painting a gloss color because of stuff like that. But it doesnt look too bad to save. Sometimes walking away and then coming back to it after the anger is gone helps. Looks like von Hammer is going to have a "nice" talk with the makers of the paint and send them to the Russian front for making a poor paint. Lol

LOL.. Actually, the Russian Front is where Major Hans Von Hammer fought during the "Bf109 Phase".. So he be able to get his hands on 'em easily, lol..

He was promoted to Oberst (Colonel) and then went back West and formed a Riechsverteidigung Geschwader in Me262s...   So I have a red Me262 in the hangar as well..

Wish he'd flown a Fw190...

Hans,, even tho you didn't spray a second coat,, consequtive passes to get coverage, might have resulted in the same effect..

hard to say for sure,, but the dots are all over, and fairly even,  so unless its a bad can of paint.. or somehow you got silicone or cheeseburger grease all over it... lol.. I'm still going with the solvent pop... Whistling

Sorry to see the damaged paint finish.

Good color, too.

Hope you are able to fix it for the build.

OTOH, you still have it for spare parts

Hans - tough break on that one, but do hope you will get back to it later.

So I've started on a 109, but the one I was slated for has been changed to Hasegawa's 1/48 scale 109F-4.  After building a Malta Spitfire flown by  Beurling, I want to do it's dogfight double.  On May 8th 1942, he was credited for shooting down one, no information known other than it was a 109.  During that time JG53 had both it's staff and II gruppen still stationed in Sicily, so markings will reflect this.

I have a spare pilot cast in metal from Airwaves, but does not fit.  So I cannibalized the one from the Airfix kit.  It has been a while since building one of these, and have since learned that there should be a seam running along the length of the fuselage, both top and bottom.  There is still debate though at which scale this becomes visible.

What I've tried here is to clean up the fuselage edges before cementing them.  A sanding stick was used to apply about a 60 degree bevel to the outer edge of the fuselage where the panel line should be.  Pictured is just the halves dry fitted.

regards,

Jack
