Speaking of 1/32 is there a certain brand that has the best bang for the $$?

It has to be an Emil version and would have to be one that is made very well?

I may be inclined to do a 1/32 109 as my second 109 for this group build... Just say'n

A trop in 1/72 will be sweet but a trop in 1/32 would be awesome!!

looking good everyone. no bench time tonight. gotta study for a test tomorrow.

was so so close to buying eduards 1/48 E-1 at the LHS today.

I'm immune...got two 1/48 109s, but I really think the 109 just does better in 1/32. Or at least...I do better when I have that extra room to work/breathe.

I've started the Hasegawa Bf 109F-2.  OOB except for some Lion Roar seat belts.  It will be Heinz Bar's JG 77 bird.

Ok fellow 109 builders, I need some help here. I was contemplating on ordering the airfix 1/72 109 E but the local store has a tamiya 1/72 109E... Is the tamiya version a good build?

looks to be a scaled down version on the 48 scale kit. i would go for it.

Jack - sounds nice! Actually sounds like an improvement in the guns over the 1/32 kits.

Regarding the 1/72 Emils - they have been around for some time so you should be able to find some online reviews and builds via google search.

At work at the moment but on the way to had a parcel waiting at the post office.  Yep, Eduard's new 1/48 Emil.  Looks fabulous in the box.  Each exhaust stub is molded separately (from the 1/32 scale design I guess).  Not hollow like ultracast, but there is a ridge around the openings.  The gun muzzle ends too are hollow as well and there are wing cannons supplied, but looking over the trees no extra panels for the wing cannons, so only option is E-1 as it is boxed.

Also got a free 2012 catalog, and within the contents there is a listing for profi-pack versions of the E-3 and also E-4.  Also listed is a 1/48 Royal Class for the 109E, but no futher info.

regards,

Jack

Oh well might just buy it give it a shot... I've had tamiya models in the past and was quite pleased with them so it cannot be bad I dont think.. The reason I switch to 1/72 is to have my top planes of WWII be able to fit on one shelf together in scale with each other and since my 1/48 B-17 is just too big Inhad to scale down.

Many pilots liked the "Fredrich" version the best, was more aerodynamic than the "Emil" or "Gustav", was a little under armed for shooting down bombers but was a delite to fly..... so they say.

don't you have to scribe the panel lines on the upper wing?

F-2 didn't have the panel lines in the upper wing...remember that came up a time or two when the Zvezda kit released.

Geof

Pit round 2... minimal weathering to go along with my evil plan. Not great pics. must have forgot to put the cam in macro mode... unfortunately zipped it up before looking at the pics. Oh well. On to the instrument panel, which should prove interesting as the decal sucks, and the actual instrument panel is going to need some hand painting. Not my forte'... gotta add the upper belts when I install the deck and motor... More to come!

Lookin good Geof!!    I hear ya with the decals,,,, mine are like potato chips even after using decal bonder spray on them,,

Vert, I was talking about the Airfix, I might have got confused there. Thanks for the intel on the 109, I had a hell of a time with the cowling on the 190 as well. Yours looks fantastic, I almost went with that scheme.

There are some that call me... Nash

H H, did you mean how is the 1/24 Airfix 109? To date I built 3 of them, when I was about 14, later at 18 while stationed at Grand Forks and again about 18 years ago which of course was the best of the lot (never had airbrush or liquid glue back then. The absolute worst thing I can say about it is it lacks wheel well detail. Next was the fit of the cowl, however there is enough meat on the cowl to allow you to thin it with a dremel and make it close up nicely. The last is more subjective, the scribed lines and rivets are a little heavy. The plus is that what is there is detailed nicely. Also easy to add detail too it. My last one was killed by one of our cats, so I will be rebuilding another to take its' place in the future.

To date I've built the Airfix 1/24 Spitfire, BF109, FW190 and P-51 Mustang. I also have waiting in the wings a Hawker Hurricane. The worst one was the P-51 As mine did not fit too well and I was unfamiliar with metal finishes.

If you talking about the Eduards 109, its got fit issues at least as bad as the Large scale on. I had to do massive fitting to the lower cowl area to get the engine to fit and I've been told that it has fitment issues even if you leave the engine out.

Here a  few so-so pictures of my 190 I built back in 1994. The spit is deteriorating along the lower seams and wings where I had some filling to do and used Super Glue and baking soda, it seems to have deteriorated over time.

 Geof:

The pit has begun... A few wires and some other minor mods. A decent start. Also, a pic of the finished DB601...

Geof that looks mighty fine !!!  Comin together great! Here is a pic of the color scheme I'm basing on my 109,,I might have taken a few "artistic" twists to it but followed the same body lines where the colors are,,, I equivilate this Trump kit to my ex-wife,,, love at first sight and no one could tell me different,,,,realising this is going to be rough but trying to make the best of it and work thru it,,,and after it's over going,,, what was I thinking?

Been there, done that, got the T-shirt...Wink
