Despite me being massively over-committed, if you guys do this (GB that is), I am sooo in!  I just coincidently ordered an Obscureco A-6B conversion.  It comes with the nose and the i.p. and I already have Standard ARM's and Shrikes, and some Wolfpak decals.  The set is supposed to be used with a Fujimi, but I am hoping it will work on a Hase.  I already have plans for all my Fujimi's....

Btw, the best part of "Flight of the Intruder" the book, was the "Iron Hand" mission in a "B".

Cheers,

Greg

I wonder if I can find decals for the one from the movie:  "Flight of the Intruder"?   The world wonders...

MicroScale sheet 72-80, if you can find a copy ...

Can I have yours?

Sorry, Manny...

Plan 'B' would be to find a Revell "Flight of the Intruder" boxing of their 1/72 A-6.  Throw away the plastic bits and keep the decals.

What's the skinny???---I see that it comes w/ a folding wing option...

Yes, folding wing option is correct. Not really a BIG MODERN US NAVY GROUPIE by any means, but the Intruder is "ugly enough to be interesting", and has folding wings. Glass / details / decals look good in the box - SOLD!! (well, stolen, for $7cdn...)  Much larger machine than I was expecting.

a B or a C is a lot of work, though

unless you build an A-6B PAT/ARM (the third type of B),,,then, you just build an A and mark it as a B,,,,,,all of those changes were internal

MicroScale sheet 72-80, if you can find a copy (no, you can't have mine...). Wink

The movie aircraft only had a partial g/w scheme, so you'll have to decide if you want a historically accurate scheme or what was in the movie.

Other interesting Viet Nam subjects might be a -B, -C or one of the experimental green camoflaged planes.

sorry to say this Manny,,,,,,but, no A-6E in Vietnam, I checked every air wing's Intruder squadrons for you,,,,no joy

I did not check the Jarheads,,,,,lol, I forgot

Rex

Thanks...I wonder if there is any differences in the basic airframes of the E and earlier models...my skinny tells me that the E just had upgraded avionics...if that's the case the exterior could be unchanged???

Haven't gone looking, but avionics upgrades would really only change the various lumps & bumps, I'm guessing. If Medicman Hercmech is right about changing the wing to a composite, there would likely be differences in the panel lines.

I rarely have anything constructive to add... so I fixed it for you.Wink

Medic  HercMech IS right about the later composite wing deal,,,,,,,but, that didn't come around until a long time after the intro of the A-6E

"backing" an A-6E kit into an A-6A is fairly easy in principle

you are sort of stuck with a late war A-6A, unless you can get some Fujimi parts from someone

the Air Brake covers, part 28B and 29B were on late aircraft, early aircraft had the perforated brakes in that location (if you can get a pair of the early brakes from a Fujimi builder that built the late A version,,,,,you would be golden)

leave off the avionics cooling scoop, part 34A, and the TRAM turret, part 65B, also the part 40B on the starboard side, near the canopy

Part 58B needs the radome shape changed to a more rounded style

hope this helps

I know most of the late model E's had the wings replaced with composite ones and some mounting stuff changed.

 Manstein's revenge:

Who is up for a Group Build...

I want to name it:  "I hate to INTRUDE..." or  "Am I INTRUDING?"...

hmmmmm - interested, but have a pile in the flightline now. Count me in if there is interest, but I'd be looking at the fall for my build. Manny - this is further out of your regular stomping grounds than mine - have you caught the Intruder bug??

Yes...

Let's just say that I am a BIG Intruder Groupie...

Of the 84 Intruders lost to all causes during the war, 10 were shot down by surface-to-air missiles (SAMs), two were shot down by MiGs, 16 were lost to operational causes, and 56 were lost to conventional ground fire and AAA. The last Intruder to be lost during the war was from Attack Squadron 35 (VA-35), flown by LT C. M. Graf and LT S. H. Hatfield, from the carrier USS America; they were shot down by ground fire on 24 January 1973 while providing close air support. The airmen ejected and were rescued by a Navy helicopter. Twenty U.S. Navy aircraft carriers rotated through the waters of Southeast Asia, providing air strikes, from the early 1960s through the early 1970s. Nine of those carriers lost A-6 Intruders: USS Constellation lost 11, USS Ranger lost eight, USS Coral Sea lost six, USS Midway lost two, USS Independence lost four, USS Kitty Hawk lost 14, USS Saratoga lost three, USS Enterprise lost eight, and USS America lost two.[6] Although capable of embarking aboard aircraft carriers, most U.S. Marine Corps A-6 Intruders were shore based in South Vietnam at Chu Lai and Da Nang.

Which version flew in 'Nam?

From what i could find in my limited modern aircraft referances, the A-6E entered service in early 1970. So at a guess, all versions upto and including the E.

I am a Norfolk man and i glory in being so
