The picture you're showing with the red moon looks like red-to-lighter red. I wonder if that one was airbrushed instead of decalled? the colours don't seem to transition as cleanly. I think I'd stick with the red-over-yellow decals that are on the sheet. I think you'll get the right look once you lay them over each other.

I don't have that sheet...I think I'll cut a template and airbrush it...

Got this patch from an A-6 driver offa the Ranger that had been refueling F-14s for a cruise or two from KA-6s.. Thought it might give ya a chuckle..

Lol, dodgy.

A patch like this could get more pilots to sign on for air-to-air assignments...

A dio idea maybe....

A dio of the patch?

Actually, the patch is pretty rare, ever since the advent of female Indifferent Tomcat pilots in the Navy...  *Sigh*...

Thanks to Manstein's revenge for pointing this build out to me! I'm working on an Italeri 1/72 Intruder that I started in late April!

A couple points that were brought up earlier in the thread: The centennial scheme was a Prowler (not sure if the distinction matters to anyone or not, though they were technically separate airframes), all the Intruders having long since been put to bed. Sadly, that Prowler itself was sent into retirement a few months ago.  The seat arrangement, like that in the front of the Prowler, was in fact (to my understanding) for pilot visibility.  The seats' first 6 feet of travel is actually via catapult - no explosives initially.  When the rocket motors ignite the seat is clear of the airframe; if you've ever seen a video clip of an Intruder or Prowler ejection, you see that thanks to the delay built into the sequence the seats are clear of each other before the rocket motors ignite.

For the speedbrakes, that change was actually relatively early on in the Intruder's service life.  They found that, especially at approach angles-of-attack, the position of the speedbrakes adversely affected the airflow over the elevators - a less than desirable thing behind the boat.  So the fuselage ones were bolted shut and the wingtip ones installed.

Anyway, I'll start a thread with some of the in progress pictures so far!

This kit is so cherry that it is too bad there aren't more AM decals out there in 72nd for the A-6...

Anyone who knows of a good source or has any "spares" please chime in...

I have that sheet and like the scheme of the a/c at the bottom, but that moon, according to my refs, should be red with a yellow tip...

Thanks for the offer though...Yes

Generally, the fit is fairly decent.  The keel section fits better than other Intruder/Prowler models I've done in either 1/48 or 1/72.  The main joint down the center of the spine is a nice fit, the only reason I put any putty on it at all is there's no actual panel line there so I wanted to try to make it truly invisible.

The only area that stands out as problematic was the wing roots; I feel as though the recesses in the fuselage may have been slightly oversized.  I filled them with some styrene strip, melted by cement, to take up most of the volume, then just added a little putty to clean up.

I finally managed to get started today!

Started with getting rid of the molded on detail, and rebuilding the rear deck. (using a bit of "artistic license" and refering the Revellograms 1/48 pit)

I jacked up the PE ejection handles for the True Details seats, so I just used fine wire. I also shortened the control stick...that thing woulda been in the pilots face!

What a great start Fermis!  Very nice indeed.

I'm still waiting on my "Iron Hand" parts from Roll Models.  I also ordered Squadron's "Wild Weasel, the SAM Suppression Story", which is supposed to have some good detail drawings on the A-6B.  I'm looking forward to getting started on this one.

Cheers,

The deck additions look really good fermis, busies it up quite a bit. I'm seriously considering adding some goodies back there now, it is a large spot to leave blank...

Manstein's revenge: I think I'll go with VA-85.  I got those markings on a Hi-Decal sheet I originally got for another project, but that one will be an extensive rehab of a not-so-great kit.  I really like the markings, and I'm pretty happy how this one's going so far, and thinking odds are good it will turn out better than the Revell rehab I'll do down the road.  I'll save the Italieri kit markings for VMA*AW)-332.

Got back into the Kinetic Intruder over the past couple of nights.  Pit is painted and right now the coat of Future is drying.  I had thought of using some resin seats from the spares box but found they fit too proud in the pit.  So kit seats it is.  The seats built up nice but had a nasty V shaped seam running down the headrest.  I used some sheet plastic to level that out.  I assembled some of the major sub-assemblies: Wings and stabs and started test fitting.  So far the fit is less than promising.  The wing join is ugly.and getting a flush fit on the lower fuselage means about a 2mm step on the upper portion of the wing.  So I'll be sanding, sanding and sanding.  Lots of injector pin marks on the stabs.  Had to sand the lower half almost paper thin to get it to fit flush.  I'll post some pics this evening.

Agreed...note to self...don't join group builds with Fermis...unless I want to feel even more inadaquate.

Started decals last night - the good news is, as they dried, that 'off color' looking carrier film on the tail went away.
