professordeath Oh wow. That is just stunning. I really love that scheme, but I'm terrified to try to pull it off. How much of the red is paint vs. decals?

All of the red is paint. The only decals that have any red in them are the stripes with the diamonds in them. The White stripes and diamonds in the horizontal stabs are also painted because I screwed up the decals.
The painting wasn't that tough because its mostly straight lines that need to be masked. And the vertical stabs can be painted separately and attached later.

Lovely build no doubt. I've been finding more excuses to use fewer decals and more painting. Wish the national insignias worked a little better for that: paid for the airbrush, might as well use it.
A model boat is much cheaper than a real one and won't sink with you in it.
professordeathGreat, thanks a lot. So, all te red is painted. Large decals like that give me nightmares. That's why I hesitate to do some of those colorful CAG aircraft. When I was still doing RC a guy at the club had an F-18 that was in this scheme. It's a real stunning look IMO.

I agree with you. Sure, the decals can save a whole bunch of time but I find that things look more convincing if they are painted on where able.
Hey all. Man there's some good looking birdies on here! Love the pictures of the 109's. Got a G-10 here I built around 6 years ago before I did any wash or weathering work. I just recently got into that stuff. Any way here goes:

professordeath I love the Tomcat. How'd you mask?
I love the Tomcat. How'd you mask?
I used Silly Putty worms to mask the line between the grey and white on the sides of the plane and masking tape on the wings. The vertical stabs were painted then attached seperately.
Thanks professordeath! I tried to attach the pictures but all I get is links to my pics. I will try again.
Ha!! Sorry...I thought you were asking me.
I tried to eyeball a reference picture and cut out 3m painters blue tape to match the splinter scheme. Following the light to dark color scheme.
Fly-n-hi & Speedlimit: Wow that's some fine work there guys! I need to get cracking on some of my air show and special edition jets!

Great builds here, as I see - congratulations to all of you!
Here are three of mine Hasegawa models - all in 1/48
Bf-109 E-1
Macchi MC-202 "Folgore"
J7W1 "Shinden"
This is my 1/48 Val. Made my own gray-amber out of Golden Fluids. Even though I had solid data on that color, it nearly drove me nuts. It was supposed to emulate one of the planes that operated in the Indian Ocean in early 42. (Soon later they switched to green "defensive" camo for all Vals & Kates and finally Zeros.) The color is related to but not the same as the early war Zero. The principle colors were ochre and black, but note the "fugitive" green that resulted depending upon the camera angle. Wanted a plane in good shape (carrier crew had some time to work on their toys) but had done some serious flying. So I gave it salt weathering to agitate the surface color. Also did some dot fading with oils. All of the minor panel lines were done with artist pencils. Early war IJN aircraft were waxed, hence the satin finish. Only the numbers on the tail were decals: other markings were masked and airbrushed.
Lovely 109E and MC 202 up there. I have both in the stash. (Never built a 109. Pretty soon.) The Folgore is so pretty that I don't know how I'd handle weathering. All warplanes once in service were beat up, but doing it right would be like putting a smudge on my late, great, deeply lamented Alfa Spyder.
Sweet builds Aleksander and Eric!
This is a fantstic thread with some great builds. Nice job, guys.

Whoaa Nice Kullervo!, Thats an A-9 though right? Not that it matters, you do really nice work! All these builds by everybody and fantastic, thanks for sharing!
I've put these together in the past two years. The P-47 in the Eighth Air Force GB. The Corsair, just for fun. Both got Eduard interior PE and aftermarket decals. The Thunderbolt got CMK control surfaces on the tail.

I used to have a T-shirt that read, "You're in TEXAS now, and we don't give a DAMN about how you used to do it back home"... :)
Here's a 1/48 Hasegawa F/A-18C.
I used GBU-12s from the Hasegawa weapons sets, Shull24 GBU-38s, AIM-9s from an Academy kit, scratch built intake/exhaust covers, AM decals, Eduard PE details and the Wolfpack folding wing set.
Hasegawa 1/48 Ki-43-I Prototype
Built awhile back but I'm pretty happy with the result. LOTS of decal setting solution needed to get the wing leading edge decals to lay flat.

Another one built awhile back. This is the 1/72 Hasegawa N1K1 Prototype w/ contra-rotating props. One of these days I'm going to covert either the Hasegawa or Tamiya 1/48 kit to a prototype.
I have eleven models built in 1/32 scale, seven are from Hasegawa.

A lot of nice builds here, thought I would toss in a few of my Hasegawa builds-all 1/72 scale:
First an F-4G "Wild Weasle" or a "Geasle" as it has been called., but it does use some Testors/Italeri decals.
And an "F" also with a mixture of Testor/Italeri decals:
An FB-111A. Obviously loaded up with plenty of fuel for a very long mission!
More later!
