Texgunner

I didn't know they flew these out of TexasWink

Big Smile Yeah, that's a little-known Japanese unit, circa '46, that had this weird fixation on Texas.  Seems that stemmed from old Western movies.  They adopted the shape of the great Lone Star state as their unit insignia.  And, that's the "rest of the story".  Cool

Lawdog114 and  Mississippivol,

What do you use for your bases?  I like them....and they seem to fit the subject perfectly.

On the bench:  Tamyia Mosquito Mk. VI for the '44 group build.  Yes, still.

Cool idea! Somehow, despite having several in the stash, I've only ever built one Hasegawa kit - the very solid N1K1 Ja-Shiden. Got it for around $20 and used it to experiment with AK Interactive's chipping fluids and a few other techniques. If the other Hasegawas I've got go together half as well as this one, I need to build another ASAP.

I got this one. Hacked the wings and flaps off and rehung them, drooped the stabilzers, cut out the cowl flaps and made some more from a coke can, Cutting Edge decals of one I saw in an "Air Combat" from 1974. Really cool for me since I lived in Olathe, KS as a kid.

Thanks for the compliment.  A local crafts store (Pat Catan's) carries the unfinished wooden plaques for 2 bucks a piece. They come in oval and a rectangle like shape.  Actually any crafts store should have these or something similar (Hobby Lobby, Michaels...etc).  I just stain them. Once dry, I tape off the edges with painters tap and use Elmer's glue under real dirt.  Model railroad grass is then added sporadically.

Glenn, trust me I know this. I'm a Miss. native living in Texas where BBQ means burning meat on the grill and drowning it in a sugary concoction as an after thought. I often preach the gospel of real southern BBQ to the locals. I sure do miss the slow cooked pork of Memphis.

Hey now, let's not go and start a war here.

Besides, Texas BBQ is smoked, not grilled. There are legitimate arguments to be made about who does the best pulled pork, the best ribs, sure, but nobody does brisket as well as Texas.

There  are some nice looking builds on this thread, but, they`re supposed to be...they are Hasegawa kits. The whole point of both Monogram Mafias GB`s and Stik`s Revell thread was to show the guys that bad mouth the "Revellogram kits" that they too can be built into impressive models, naturally with a little extra elbow grease and some modeling skills, possibly some "gizmology". I like the shake-n-bake kits too, as long as I can find `em cheap..... ; p

Hasegawa has been around a long time. It's true you can pay $40 and up for a 1/48 scale fighter, especially if it represents some special unit or ace. But some of their older kits are very good and are out there for $25 and under. Check the sale items and a $20 1/48 is common. I don't model in 1/32 but it strikes me that Hasegawa kits in that scale are very reasonably priced. (Wish they made armor in 1/35: they've got sweet looking 1/72s in large numbers.) And I certainly wouldn't say these things build themselves the way the best of the Tamiya kits do. There's plenty of room for scratch building. And if the resulting product looks a cleaner than some of the US antiques, that's not necessarily an insult. More to the point, Hasegawa makes a lot of planes others don't - especially Japanese. And even if there's something heroic about making a bad kit a good model, there just aren't that many of them out there. Scalehobbyist offers the best selection/value that I know of on the net. In their collection of 1/48 WWII fighters they had 14 from US Rev/Mono and 43 from Hasegawa.

Hey, I spent two weeks in Leavenworth, about 1972, staying with in-laws while I was getting a multiengine rating in Kansas City.

Still remember being glad I was outside those stone walls!

It worked out great - I honestly think anything "off" about it was my fault with not having used it before.

Essentially, it works like a controlled hairspray technique that you can pump through the airbrush. It's disconcerting wetting the paint after it goes down, and seeing it rise up and get all bubbly as the chipping fluid underneath reacts.

Biggest problems I had were that I think I both overdid and made the chipping too uniform, and that I overdid the salt weathering, particularly on what was a gorgeous NMF underside:

Honestly, with the Revell/Monogram kits, a lot of them are really solid kits considering their vintage. And if you look at some of the old Hasegawa kits of similar vintage (I've got the ancient 1/32 P-51 in my stash), they present all the same challenges.
Difference to my mind is, somewhere along the way, Revell/Monogram got comfortable just repackaging and rereleasing their "glory days". I would venture every new tooling they've released since I started modeling (late 80s) is at the very least amazingly decent (off the top of my head, the PBY, the A-26 Invader, F-15E Strike Eagle, F-84 Thunderjet, I believe the P-39...). Thing is, they just stopped making as many and keep pumping out the old, over and over again.
A better thread might be "Show us your kits tooled before 1978" or whenever. Yeah I realize the impetus behind the original thread, but let's be honest here - Revell's modern kits are competitive with anything out there. Their PV-1, 1/72 B-17, most of the stuff coming out ouf RoG (my god...the Arado 196, Ju 88, He 111 and upcoming He 219...). The reason they have the reputation they do, lazy as that reputation may be, is because they've brought it on themselves by mixing the really amazing new stuff with the old.

Great stuff guys! Loved looking though everything here- some I've seen and some I haven't so it's great to catch up.

Hmmmmmm, well I think Doogs said it before, and I'll agree - I like painting and decaling. Putting and sanding and rinse-repeat isn't fun. No offense to those who like Revell and Monogram kits but I'll pay extra for a Hasegawa so I can get to the fun parts faster.

Gary: Thanks!

They're Royal Thai Air Force. Thailand was 'invited' to join the Greater Asian Co-Prosperity Sphere- or else... They recieved a small shipment of Ki-43s in exchange for their 'support. '

They're on this sheet from Empire City Decals. Excellent print quality and they went on great. I can't find their website and I'm not sure they're still in business Sad

Here's a 1/48 F/A-18F that I built a few years ago.  I was inspired to build this after playing Over-G Fighters on the Xbox 360.  This is one of the planes that is featured.

Its almost completely OOB with the exception being the AGM-88s and their rails.  Those came from the Hasegawa weapons set.  The seat belts are scratch, as well. I used TwoBobs decals for the VFA-102 Diamondbacks 50th Anniversary colors:

This was the first time I used glow-in-the-dark paint for the formation lights:

Manny, I'm intrigued by the canopy framing on your Arado 234.  It looks really great; how did you do that?  Is the detail(round rivets? screws?) on the frames painted?  It looks awesome and since I have this kit in the stash, I'd love to know the secret.  Thanks!
