Hi Toshi, another great looking build taking shape.  I learned the same way you did about pre-shading.  I thought skipping the set up and cleaning of the airbrush by using a pen or brush on the panel lines would be fine, until the top coats went on and then, like GM said, I could really see the demarcation between black and the top coat. Yuck!  With the airbrush, you can feather the pre-shade out so it will give the subltle, blending effect.

For me, easier said than done, I am still a big novice at it and will be trying it again on my Zero.

So for this evening, on went the decals, I'll let that set overnight then on goes the Testors Laquer Dullcote or maybe MM Acrylic Flat.  I'll see how I feell tomorrow About it.

There are several touch ups still needed, some type of wash, and weathering to bring out the panel lines and to add a little more color to the A-1.  Until then, please see my progress for this evening.

Looks great, Toshi!  I know I'd be nervouse trying to wash all around that ordinance and other protuberations.  I'm clumsy so I have to always do those things almost last.

Decals look good Toshi. And she looks mean all loaded for bear!

Btw: I'm with Gary on this, I always but the ordinance on last, I'm scared of knocking stuff off when fooling around with the wash.

To Gazzas and Gamera,

Tamiya has plastic gaskets on the ordinance.  They can all come off.  You can add or delete what you want or don't want at your discretion.  Tamiya thinks of everything!

Another oustanding build Toshi. That Spad looks deadly with all those weapons.

Here is a sample of preliminary weathering, this is not final.  I still have other things in mind at this time.  A little experimenting and I'll see what works best.  Thank you forum members for your extremely patient will with me.  I'm somewhat at a lost when it comes to the final touch ups.  All I can promise you is that I will continue to strive for the best.

May I ask if you have any of the Tamiya weathering powders yet? I think I saw them at Hobby Lobby. WInk, wink, nudge, nudge lol.

Might get you some better results for your exhaust stains I'm thinking. What you've got is good, but you've proven in every circumstance that you are capable of so much, and with a little advice you always jump up in skill like nobody I've ever seen. Its amazing all of us!

What's nice is the fact that if you don't like what you see, they wash off with water and you can start all over again.  I like to rub my fingers over it and use a flat brush to apply the powders, just like a pastel but better.  Once I'm satisfied with what I see, I'll just seal it with Testors Lacquer Dullcote.  In this instance, I sealed it with MM Flat Acrylic.

As for my capabilities, I as a student am only good because I have a great teacher(s)!

To my fellow forum members,

At this point, with what little experience I have, this is as far as I can take this build.  Every build I've done in the past have had several dozens of assembly mistakes that I've made.  It was very frustrating at times.  On this particular build, I made only one mistake.  The poly-cap (Gasket) for the Proppeler fell off, so I just utilized CA to secure it.

As for the weathering, I'm always going way overboard with what I try to attempt in such ridicules ways.  Since I've invested in Tamiya's Weathering kits A&B, I figured to use these and be as subtle as possible.  I hope to forum members eyes, I've at the very least achieved some semblance of this.

Ultimately, I had a great time with this build as well as a sense of accomplishment.  It's still not perfect, but I feel it's one of the better builds done within my repertoire.  The other builds that I feel fall into this category is the Arrow, Visible B-17, and Corsair II.  These builds have had minimal assembly mistakes and overall the finish was something I was extremely happy with.  I hope you enjoy the photos above as much as I have had the pleasure of building the A-1J Sky Raider!

Truly, all I did was take what you've taught me on the M1A1 Abrams build and I applied it to the A-1J Sky Raider.  You're a great sensei (Teacher)!  Thank you for taking the time out and guiding me step by step.

     It looks fabulous!  As modellers, we always try to walk the line between too much and too little.  I believe more important than either of those two issues is the issue of a model being visually interesting.  And you've nailed that.
