I got to see one in the Wright Patterson AF Museum in OH and none of my photos came out. Too dark. We had one land at night at my base during a heavy rain, low ceiling night. The flightliine when black, it taxied, refueled and took off again. I got to sit on the flightline and watch the whole thing. Awesome sight to see that take off at night.  He went full afterburner and about 100 feet or so off the deck he went full nose up and disappeared into the clouds. We could here it roar for the longest time. Seemed like 30 minutes. I will never forget that.

That is an amazing story!  I'm glad that you shared this experience with forum members of FSM.  I'm also honored that you would do so on my thread.  Thank you sir.

I was on Google Earth one day looking at sat images of the aircraft disposal and storage facility and actually say a couple of those drones sitting out behind a shed or something.  Hopefully they end up in a museum and not a 12 pack.

Wow, I had originally had know idea that there were such a thing as drones until I purchased this kit.  It's amazing how a simple model can show and teach hobbyist like us so many of the varied wealth of knowledge.   Thus I want to thank you for sharing this with forum members!

Check out Habu on the web and you'll find a bunch of references to the small, highly poisonous snake found in Okinawa, where a number of SR-71's were stationed. Habu.org has a lot of info and pictures of the plane.

"When the A-12s (and later the SR-71s) were first flown to their new remote base at Kadena AFB in Okinawa, the local people thought that this strange and somewhat wicked-looking airplane was shaped like the habu snake.  They started calling it the habu airplane, and later just habu.  Crews who flew the airplane were also called Habu, and the name came to be recognized with the blackbird program and even incorporated into the insignia worn by the crews on their uniforms. ", from habu.org.

There are a number of planes that have images of the snake on them and there a lot of images and lore about the plane on various websites, its worth a google search.

Ken

I know I read something about a squadron named Habu, I just did not know if it referred to the SR-71.  Thank you sir for enlightening myself as well as other forum members.  Your information is greatly appreciated, thank you so much!

When we went to California to visit my brother, he took us to Castle Air Museum in Atwater and the first plane I saw as we entered the parking lot was a Blackbird.  There are no markings or numbers on her.  All the planes there are chained off and are only opened up two days a year.  Right next to it is the Douglas VC-9C that was in the Presidential Fleet.  Great place but would be a lot better if you could go aboard and check them out.

I agree, It would have been a very rare treat to actually board such distinguished aircraft from a historical perspective.  That's why I have such a passion for this hobby, it brings us all that much closer to the real thing, thank you sir!

Here is what I've done for this evening.  There's still another coat that I'll spray and then clean a few things up.  Please view the following.

Here is what was done for Wednesday December 16, 2015.  I messed with the decals all day.  It was fun and a great sense of accomplishment.  Now for buttoning up and cleaning up the SR-71.

Toshi -

Mister Master Modeler you are, what a beautiful build. I built the same kit, used decals for #955.

Looks like the finish is perfect, as is the placement of the markings. Congratulations, I do believe you have blasted right past me in terms of ability.

But then, you condensed twenty years of building experience in just a few months, with your FURIOUS build rate.

What's next?

2 days? Painted and decaled? And looks great? I must be dreaming. That's a bada$$ aircraft. My 1st expedience seeing that was a YF-12A at an open house at Eglin AFB in the late 60's. You could walk up to and under any aircraft on the tarmac but that. Every opening was cover including windows and it was cordoned off about 100' al around. Signs on every stanchion NO PHOTOS ALLOWED and enough guys in uniform around the aircraft that you did't want t get caught pointing a camera in that direction.

Thank you wing_nut.  After some scrutinizing, I do see some minor details that I made mistakes on but it's negligible at best.  I'll fix it possibly this evening or tomorrow.  That's a very cool story, thanks for sharing.  It seems everyone has seen this wonder at one time or another!

Thank you cnq!  You'll enjoy the build, this was a first for me.  It's a present for my daughters boyfriend Brett.  He used to build kits with his grandfather.  Now that his grandfather past away, he always remembered the Blackbird as it was also his favorite aircraft of all time.  He too has a soft spot for it as well.

Thank you for the read and reply,

You should Bish, it's a nice clean build and everything goes together like a charm with no issues at all.  I'd love to see your build as well for next year.

Gorgeous job on that sleek bird Toshi! I saw the one at the USAF museum last year. I have that same kit and your build is very inspiring! Now over to watch your Dauntless build my friend. You need to start selling tickets for your builds as the audience is huge!

$&($&@$@(*&@!!!!! I step away from the forum for the weekend and you're already done!?! You need to bottle whatever you've got there, I could use a little (ok a lot) more pep in my step!

And again you need a great job on her!
