Hi Toshi

The Stuka is one of my favorite WW2 German planes a special affection Because as a young lad I grew up in Chicago and my Dad used to take us to the Chicago museam of Science and Industry.

We would would look at the Spitfire MK-1, Stuka with the red snake on the side of the fuselage as well as tour the U-505 Submarine. My Dad was a young lad when he saw the U-505 dragged from the shores of Lake Michigan to a resting berth near the museam. As many know the U-505 was completely restored to better than before glory and is now housed in its own building.

I went to 2 of the re-unions of the crew of the U-505 and have most of their autograghs on a print Robert Taylor the artist created; in fact the print hangs in my office now.

Anyway, I like the Winter camo that Trumpeter had on that instruction sheet which you had  posted but one of the posts stated you won't be doing it. Which one did you choose.?

I have a stash of the Revell 1/32nd Stuka's a couple in Hungarian markings and a couple in the "snake" on the fuselage ones. I also have a couple of the 21st Centry 1/32nd ones unbuilt in a kit format. I could part with a couple of them if you wanted. my 12 year old attempted to build one of them and stopped, claiming 1/32nd was a little too big for him at this time so we will finish it together after we finish a B-25 we are working on for a WW2 B-25 Pilot who flew 28 missions in the Pacific. The Monogram kit is frustrating and I'm tempted to trash it and use one of my Accurate Miniatures kits.

If you can share that Stuka Winter Camo I'd appreciate it

Trumpeter have also released a 32nd 87A and G and are supposed to be releeing a 24th 87D. My eyes are definatly on the A, looks like a nice kit, though with some minour fault's as the B has. I have not seen anything on the G, and as i already have a Hase 32nd G, the Trump kit is not in my sights. But i think PJ has one.

*Do I have the HobbyTownUSA bit straight? You have a well-stocked HobbyTown 40 minutes from your house and this is the first you knew of it???? Do I read that Mrs Toshi found it and surprised you by going there??? If so, holy cow. If not, holy cow anyway, no wonder you were excited! I'll never forget my first visit to one a couple years back, which happened to be a very well-stocked one like yours. I was like a kid in a candy store. Pity it is a couple thousand miles away.

Yes, I've only heard of a place called Hobby Town USA.  It was Mrs. Toshi that took me there on a nice beautiful weekend.  I felt like I was 8 years old all over again.  We were supposed to go there this weekend but Mrs. Toshi caught the flu, so I've been taking care of her.

Originally, I was going to do my own mask for the Stuka.  After some frustration, it was Mrs. Toshi that recommended that I order and await for the Stuka mask.  Thanks Gerg for always following and replying on my builds, I greatly appreciate it!

As I was preparing to weather the Stuka, Mrs. Toshi took a look at it and said to leave it without weathering.  It's the first time she had ever added any input to the actual build.  Usually she'll let me do what I want with it.  

Since this was her first ever input, you'll see the Stuka completed as is.  In all honesty, I really like the "Museum" look to it.  I think it's pretty cool.  I guess that's what we men call "Woman's Intuition".

Hey Toshi she turned out great! You even did a great job on that cursed, vile, difficult, colour yellow which I hate more than any other...  And the canopy looks perfect. 

One little tiny nitpick though, are you painting the engine exhaust pipes? They look sorta odd in the same yellow as the cowling. All you need is a little rusty brown paint and a small brush- shouldn't take more than three or four minutes.

Great job so far, masking that canopy was epic- like Bish I consider the pre-cut canopy masks to be worth their weight in gold. I absolutly hate trying to mask off canopies esp the really complex ones like this. The splinter camo came out terrific! 

Just for the heck of it you might try doing this sexy Stuka slayer when you get done with your current haul :

Your splinter camoflage came out nicely Toshi! What color did you paint the undersides? It looks like RLM 76 and I think it's supposed to be RLM 78 which is a brighter blue. I made that mistake with mine but it was too late for me to do anything about it. Just wondering.

Ye, thats what its called. Its the standard German scheme for bombers in the first part of the war. Look at any German bomber, He 111, Ju 88 etc, and you will see the same scheme.

You worry, you wil get used to the term on here in time. I have not built a Stuka myself in a couple of years, so i am well over due at least one.

I've finally got the entire aircraft in the German Camoflauge motif.  All the camoflauge was done by hand with a flat brush and frog tape.  Just something different on this Valentines Day.  I now need to add some yellow enhancements on the underside of the wing tips and a yellow band at the rear of the aircraft.  Once that's done I'll be glossing the entire aircraft to seal it in preparation of the addition of decals. 

This time I'm going to seal it again then add a wash onto the entire Stuka.  I hope this works.  Once this is accomplished, I'll seal it with it's final coat.  Wish me luck, I hope it works!

I had a great time as I think the Stuka looks awesome.  I still have to camoflauge the sides and button up the build.  It's slowly getting there, I can't wait to put the bombs and decals on followed by a wash.

After waiting about a couple of weeks, I've finally received my mask for the Stuka.  While the primer cures on the Mosquito, this was a great time to mask the Stuka canopy.  The mask is by Eduard.  There were some areas that needed liquid masking, I just cut out my own shapes out of Tamiya tape.

So here we are, Mrs. Toshi driving me to Hobby Lobby as I am unable to drive myself.  Or do we go to Hobby Lobby.  We take 271 North and head towards Mentor.  What's there?  It's a 40 minute drive.  Mrs. Toshi told me to chill out.  LOL!

We pull into a commons and park right in front of?  What's that, a hobby store?  Yes, Hobby Town USA!  We both literally got excited and went down every aisle.  There are a ton of trains and RC products galore.  But that was not on my agenda, although it was cool to see such a huge inventory.

We both saved the best for last, MODEL KITS!  More importantly, aircraft model kits.  Hobby Town USA had a huge inventory of Tamiya, Hasegawa, Airfix, Hobby Boss, Revell, and Revell of Germany Aircraft kits. I went absolutely mad!  It was as if the child in me exploded with glee.  Right around the corner in the next aisle were the building supplies.  Excel seemed to be the majority of supplies there with some Revell products.  As for paints?  Alclad (I've never seen this before in my life), Model Master, Testors, and Tamiya.  Wow, I actually found a hobby shop that carries Tamiya bottle paints and rattle cans.  

Well I still needed an interim basis model kit until my Eduard mask for the Stuka build arrived and or my Kitty Hawk P-39 arrived.  Mrs. Toshi picked out for me not one but two Revell of Germany kits, I was blown away, she said after looking at all the choices available, the 190 and the mosquito looked like the best kits for me to build.  Let me say this much, I was ecstatic!  I've never built a Revell of Germany kit in my life so this was something new and exciting.  Below are the 2 kits and a couple of supplies Mrs. Toshi thought I needed.

As always, I will do a step by step WIP build of both these kits.  Now I need to figure out which one I would assemble first.  LOL!

This is where I'm at with the Stuka, and the buck stops here.  Why?  I'm having trouble with my hands.  I tried to mask the canopies last night so that I can primer the whole Ju 87.  It was a disaster.  Mrs. Toshi ordered for me a Eduard mask for this particular kit.  I'm thinking next Wednesday at the latest?  

Until then, I still have some prep to do as well as starting the building of the various bombs.  I think it's pretty cool, but we will have to wait for that.  I'm heading out to Hobby Lobby to find some type of kit to buy during the interim.  I also have a Kitty Hawk 1:32 P-39Q on it's way.  Thank you all for your patience and visit.

They did away with the Jericho Trumpet, the reason why was that at first, it used to scare the enemies, then they started getting use to it (I don't know if anyone can get use to such a sound) hence the change.  Thanks for the visit.

They continued to be fitted to aircraft until the inroduction of the D-3. Though many pilots did leave the fairings on and did not have the propeller fitted, they were fitted on all and still in use on some. The reason pilots did not like them is because it slowed the aircraft down and some found it distracting.

You can see on the box art that the siren is fitted, but faired over.

But most aircraft in StG 2 seem to have left the fairings on, i can't find a pic of the one your doing.

I have been thinking about building the Trumpeter 1/32 Stuka with the Skis and also a JU52 (if I can find one at a reasonable price on Ebay)  both in heavy winter camo, so I'll be following your build with interest.

 Man Toshi, you were not kidding when you were going to start a 1/32 Stuka "soon".  And that was last week with we were talking on the Kingfisher thread.  Its Monday and your knee deep into a very complex looking kit.

All I got done was airbrushing the underside of a 1/72 B17

On your engine, did you hand paint it after primer or spray it?  And for the weather, is that paint or weathering pigments?

1) Primer with Rusroleum flat gray MAXX Cover.

2) AB Vallejo gun metal gray 70.863.  It looks more black than gray.  I noticed a lot of modelers use black as their base for the engines.  I chose this particular color due to the fact that there's tiny or just a hint of mettalic pigment to bring out the details as oppose to just black.  At the very least, I really like it.

3) With a brush, I'll hand paint according to the assembly manual to what color each part is suppose to be to the best of my abilities.  

4) I hand brush Tamiya Weathering Pigments onto specific areas of the engine black or soot, engine mounts, oil covers, and especially where the exhaust ports are.

5) I'll go back and touch up what I missed.

Here is where I'll stop today.  The work done was inspirational at best due to such details Trumpeter provides.  I will definately leave certain panels open to show off the detail of the Stuka engine.  Thank you forum members for your Support, read, and replies.  It means so very much to me and has helped me grow not only in this hobby but spiritually as well.  I've learned to love what I do, love myself, and love everyone.  Life is good, it's short so I make the best of it.

I really must get one of these, my collection just is not complete without a 32nd 87B. But i would liek to get the revell kit as well to correct the shape issues on the Trump one. I just can't live with those not on a Stuka.

But i have been looking closely at your sprue pics Toshi. I can see the one large bomb for the fuselage and the 4 small ones for the wings, is there another one that i can't spot.

Yes, the Trumpeter kits aplenty, I see no Revell 1:32 Stuka.  The only Revell/Monogram Stuka I see is the old 1:48 mold.  If you do see it, I would recommend that you immediately pull the trigger and purchase it.

There are the odd 21st Century kit around as well, and apparently that would work to. There is a correction set for the Trump kit, but its pricey and still needs detail added to match the Trump kit. 48th doesn't do it for me, i have enough 72nd Stuka's to keep me going and would just like to add a couple more 32nd and maybe another 24th to the collection.

So how are you getting on, i imagine you must have that engine wrapped up by now.

I too have always been fascinated by the Stuka. I have the Hasegawa 1/48 Ju87B2 in my stash and will, as usual, marvel at your WIP.

Someday I may feel I've amassed enough skill to actually post another of my aircraft builds on this forum but, in the meantime, you and the many other expert aircraft kit builders continue to provide me with intruction and inspiration while I eagerly view the progress of your builds.

I'd love to see your Stuka build posted.  That would be great!  My builds are full of mistakes, my models as well as myself are no where near an experts build.  I started with a Monogram 1:48 P-61 Blackwidow, my very first build.  I knew I was way out of my league but, by continued posting, and feedback, I was able to grow as a modeler.  

I just looked back at that build and I shook my head, laughed, and gaped.  But I looked at my other builds and have seen the baby step progress that I've made in my humble opinion.

As you well know, our brothers and sisters here on this very forum are nothing short of a family.  As a family, I took in all critiques good and bad to the next level, to the best of my meager abilities.  I can wish you only the best and you have my undivided attention as well as my support.  So please don't feel like your build is not worthy enough to post.  As a new member, I should be as such.  Thank you so much 1943Mike for your support, read and replies as you just don't know how much it means to me!

I forgot to add, my next build after the Stuka is completed will be a Kitty Hawk 1:32 P-39 Airacobra.  I'm extremely excited as I've never built anything from Kitty Hawk nor have the chance to build a P-39!
