The 1/48 scale monogram Black Widdow Kit has 1/72 nd scale seats. You might want to modify it .

Putting it together.Had to use the big clamp because the mini clamps would not open wide enough.

Wow!it took almost two hours to wet sand the putty with 320 grit!I am sure a P-38 would be just as much fun...NOT! Glad that is over but it was necessary.

The extra time will pay dividends in the end. It's looking very good.

As I have been warned, the top hatch does not fit (too small).I think I will get a clear strip and install it but it is tricky as normal adhesives will fog the clear parts. There must be a mechanical connection while the white glue sets.

I came up with a solution(I hope).i white glue a piece of clear styrene to act as a canopy support.I had to go through many pieces until I made one that fit in the correct orientation.Cannot believe that Monogramdid not includea second canopy that fit properly for those who wished to build the model with a closed canopy.I also had to glue a stick on top of the masking tape to make installation of the top and side glass easier.Major design flaw .

Installed the top hatch with 2 part epoxy.there are gaps that will be filled with more epoxy once the first batch sets.the stick will be removed after painting.then i have to install the side glass and i am anticipating  problems also.

The side window kind of fit but I still had to use epoxy to close some gappage where the side window met the top.

I just cant believe Squadron or some one else hasn't come up with replacement canopies for this kit.  I have 2 in the stash--had em since the late 80's and was always intimidated by them for some odd reason.

Like what you're doing so far!  It will be worth it.

I sure hope so!I fail to understand why my Devastator (see my avatar)had the closed canopy option that fit very we'll but the 61 did not even though they were both released in the mid 70s.This canopy problem is really causing delays and inconvenience.

You're doing a great job so far. The lack of maintenance on the old molds sure do make things challenging.

Yes,I will press on!The back glass has the same issue with the side panel not fitting.I had to file it down but it still left a large gap at the top.Arghhhhhhh!

Wow, thats a lot of filling and sanding.  I agree with Brandon, though. The extra effort makes it all the more worthwhile.

As you can see from the white styrene strip, the gap was not small!

It was tough to peel off the masks and I had to touch up some areas with bare metal foil.I guess It will have to do!

Wow, I've never seen a P-61 in anything other than black or brown. Very interesting to see where you take this.

I could have taken the easy route and just paint it black or olive with the invasion stripes but I wanted to try the Alclad on an entire aircraft,I must say i am very impressed and if I ever do a 29 or 36 I will use it again!
