2015 Messerschmitt Bf 109 Group Build

Started applying the spots last night... So far so good, The pictures look a lot darker but the chart listed the color as RLM83, and that's what the bottle states it is.... So... Here it is. I just took a clear acetate sheet and cut 20 or so odd shapes in it with an Xacto knife and a #11 blade and it made a pretty good masking tool. To do these though I wanted to avoid a lot of over spray so I got up close (about a quarter inch) and turned the pressure down to about 5 psi.

Added a little exhaust staining...

And that's about all for now. Bout all I have left to do are some fiddly bits, an antenna wire and a tad of touch up. Should be done soon! Thanks all and take care...

That is one fancy looking scheme and great idea for the masking. That 's the thing with the 109's, just too many cool looking schemes to pick a favorite.

Bish- Hey there, I am currently making a 1/144 Diorama of an Air Museum.   I have collected a ton of little 1/144 plane kits.  I happen to have a Bf109 that I am going to put in it.  So I'd like to enter it.  Its made by Zvezda.  Thanks!

Doug: Man you know I like the ol' spotted camo approach. That looks great man! You've really blasted past this one here it seems almost flawlessly.

Just two 109's in the stash? There are just too many variants and schemes to model so the more the better. I want to get the G10 and would love to find a discontinued K-4.

After noon all! Well I got a good day in today and I'm saying DONE!

Well, all in all, it wasn't a bad kit at all, only really suffers (like most do) for some cockpit detail, but still an easily remedied problem. Went together well , and really was a reasonably good build. Not one of my better efforts, but as I said earlier, I couldn't see spending 4 to 5 times the cost of the kit to dress it up.

Thank you all for the support and kind words, I am already planning and compiling material for my next 109. It will be a 32nd scale Revell "G" Black 2 flown by Gunther Rall The Eastern front 1943. I'm still reading but at this time believe him to have been a Major.

Well done, RR! That's the first time I've seen that scheme built and I think you've really done it justice! My yardstick is the artwork in the Janes book from 1980, and it's not an easy scheme to do!

  Thanks Greg, Mike...Yeah, the first time I saw this aircraft was in the Osprey book 109 Aces of the Eastern Front. Then again tn the Robert Grinsell book Messerschmitt Bf109. I thought that it would be an interesting build some day. Then I started looking into the aircraft and pilot Heinrich Erlher and what an interesting guy.

  A kill record of between 121 and 129 (that was never explained) was held personally responsible for the sinking of the Tripitz, due to his supposed inability to provide an adaquit air defense when it was attacked,  sentenced to three yrs in prison AFTER the final victory, (what a joke) retrained as an Me262 pilot and was killed just days before the end of the war when he rammed a B17 with his aircraft.

Seem to be off to a good start there moose.

Rigidrider - that one came out really nice. I love the variety of Luftwaffe schemes, and that's one I'd definitely never seen before, but I really like it.

Moose - nice start on that pit. Those belts definitely have more depth than molded-in ones, and it'll be cool to see a night fighter.

Doug: You really put on a show with that camo scheme!! Part of what sparks my interest in Luftwaffe aircraft is all the oddball schemes these guys came up with. Everyone else had more standardized camo patterns and it seems that the Germans really just "stepped out of the norm" more often than not in regards to that. That paint just looks like a million bucks even though you didn't spend a whole lot of money on the build. Great contribution to the GB Doug and I've already got you posted. Lookin' forward to that Rall build. Your pic is posted in the intro pal.

Moose: That cockpit looks great man!! Lots of work going on in there to make it look really busy!!! The one thing that I might look at again would be the "lay " of the seat belts. Gravity will make these tend to lay more against the contour of the seat back in real life. In any case that interior looks like you've spent a lot of time on it and is a vast improvement over the out of box parts.

Bish, Brandon, Moose, Joe... thanks one and all!  Like Brandon has said, there are so many schemes to choose from. Thats why I love the 109 and the Luftwaffe in general, over 33,000 built and if you look at the many different units and there locations, virtually each one had its own specialized markings. In my opinion , very smart and thankfully very understanding of the RLM to allow these variances.  I'm always looking for unique and different schemes to try, but like the next one I want to do, very standard camo, but still a beautiful example of this old war bird.

Oh, and Moose, great job on the pit so far, agree with Joe on the belts, but it can be somewhat difficult to get them to lay just right, still, looking good!

Thanks guys for the compliments.  Joe, Doug,  I see what you mean with the belts.  I thought I had them right. But I see that I didn't.  They have been fixed since.  I now have them laying flat against the seat.

I'd like to join in if I could.  Airfix's 1/72 E-4 in Battle of Britain markings.  Not sure of the pilot as I have several to choose from.

Sorry for all the time away guys, I've been far too busy with other life matters to keep up on here. I have reviewed your builds and I am in awe. Everyone of you have put together some stunning builds and each and everyone deserves nothing but the highest praise. I would make a list but my time is too short and I simply don't have the time. Don't take my lack of participation lately as any sign of not caring, as I do care, my schedule of late is just plane crazy and I can't keep up.

Quick update:

I managed to get the majority of the 109 assembled a litle here and a little there. This kit is fairly complicated and doesn't take kindly to being rushed. If any of you want to build the Zvezda kit I can't say enough good things about it. But, I give one word of caution, patience! This is an outstanding kit and its fit and detail is outstanding but with all the fiddly bits you are forced to move slowly, much more slowly than one would proceed on most other kits.

That being said here is where I stand today. I managed to get all the control surfaces applied and the cockpit masked off using the Montex masks, which are just outstanding, better than the Eduard masks by a long shot, in MY opinion. Once I get the canopy painted on the inside I will complete the pilots rear armor plate installation and mount the canopy so I can get this kit in primer. When that will happen is anyone's guess.

Remember, I have added loads of upgraded PE and resin so what you see is not exactly the way this kit comes from the box. I have so many left over parts that I could build another kit if I have a fuselage and wings, I literally have at least one of everything else left over. 

I may sound like I am rambling, but I am rushing to get out the door and still give you guys an update. Hopefully, I can slow down soon and make better updates to you and comment on your builds more often. So, without further waiting, here are the pics.

So many great looking aircraft in the GB!!!!  I got a little more bench time yesterday morning to finish up my G-6.  I'll get completion photos up hopefully this week before I head out of town.

Mustang1989-  Sorry man, for some reason I though Bish was running this one.  Opps!   Anyhow the Model is a Zvezda 1/144 Bf109-F2.    Thanks! :)
