I have been stuck in neutral for a while because Frank got my last mask for my bird. I just got some more mask in today so maybe I will have some movement this weekend on the old girl.

Sean: Thanks for the profiles!

Thad: Yes, those mask sets are scarce as hen's teeth! I still need another for this GB! I'll be shopping for some after the New Year and will post here where I find them!

Killing time until XMas party tonight....

When it was time to paint the wheel wells on the PH GB PBY....to save some time, I built the LG by fitting the parts in the well and holding them with white glue....in essence using the well as a template.

Then I glued the various LG parts in place and after drying, moistened the white glue with a Q-Tip and removed the assembly as a whole. Then I was able to install the well and get it painted with minimal masking.

Just a belated thought........

Merry Christmas Frankie!....and thanks for the pm!

Yeah, building the LG assembly that way just let me do more work on the model in shorter time....didn't want to put it away while on a roll just to let paint dry.

Plus! Dry fit your LG parts! You will need to drill out some socket holes and/or trim some pins at glue points to get a proper fit.

Thanks again for the XMas gifts!

Thanks David, Merry Christmas to you as well!  I really do hope you enjoy your gifts, and it looks like we will be building Japanese warbirds together!  I received a Hasegawa 1/48 Ki-44 and a Hasegawa 1/48 Ki-100 from the gift exchanges, so it looks like IJA and IJN builds are the order of the day! Thumbs Up [tup]

On a semi-related note.....my sister called a bit ago about some unopened gifts she handed me while dropping me off.....

I hadn't opened them. So she made me.

1st one was a 1/48 Revell P-38J!

How DO they know this stuff? They know I'm into kits.....but they got the scale right!Confused [%-)]

Nam!  That's a great tip!  The best thing is that its useable on other parts and kits too!  Thanks!

Cheers,
Alex

Merry Christmas Sean! True! I can envision how it can help to save time and stay focused on the current project!

The long main strut on my right-side LG is a bit warped.....angled a few degrees, just enough to be noticeable. I've gently bent it straight a few times but it returns to odd angle. I'm not going to sweat it.

Nose weight: (No, that isn't a member here!Laugh [(-D]).....I had added a couple dozen lead split-shot sinkers beneath the nose turret position but that was not enough. I was resigned to buying some more weight when I found a lead tire balancing weight in a parking lot. Since then I've found two more!

I cut the first one into 3 chunks and dropped them into a bed of epoxy just aft of the pit bulkhead. The bird sits perfectly.

Thanks Lt for letting me in , I have been researching out my Catalina and have found out my "after market" decals have deceived me. Shock [:O] There was never a CG Catalina serial # V-159  but there was one V-189 so that will be the one I try to replicate. I have found some really interesting history on CG V-189 but not many pictures (least good ones)

http://uscgaviationhistory.aoptero.org/images/PBY%20V-189.pdf

Aaron - there was no info on the box or in the instructions about the "Box Art" markings. I will check into some Navy Sites to see if they are genuine or fluffed.  That is the reason I have not built any of my 1/48 Catalinas as I dont like the kit supplied decals.

I asking for some help here. I have the Mongram PBY-5 that I am going to build in additon to PBY-5A that I am already working on. I have the bug eye turret that I am not using for the 5A, so....... I thought that I could use it on the -5. Now my problem is the markings. Did the Black Cats use the -5? If they did does anyone have the Promodeler version decal sheet? If you do would it be possible to scan it and send it to me by PM. I am thinking that I could make a copy of the decals and use them on the -5. I can most likely use the squadron insignia and then mask all the other markings and paint them. Hopefully this doesn't break any copy right laws. Any help is appreciated.

Hi Mike! I don't know about the legality of decals........but I'm sure others do.

The Black Cats used the -5 with minimal markings by my refs. Star and Bar on each side of the nose and the wing locations. Plus a 2 digit buno on the tail.

That's what I have.

Ah Frank! Not too worry the T REx broke out of the tree line shortly there after and ate my camera!. Seriously there are many canals here that weave in an through a lot of the industries attached to biyous and outlets for the drainage issues. Lots of Alligators but I saw something that took be aback the other day. I was crossing a small bridge over one of those canals through some petrolium products plant and out of the water sprang a tail the size of a mermaid!  It was huge and green and scaly! Looked like a sea monster and I questioned my sanity like you all often do.  Turns out it belongs to a fish called the Alligator Gar. Look that one up! There be monsters out there for real!
