I rented "Always" and watched it again....Whistling [:-^]

I actually finished a GB this week, so Mister Supercat moved up into the #2 spot, and the current #1 is going together in stages, so I really can get going on this GB. I'm going to try to get the fuselage halves joined and start building the rudder.

The 'pit is a complete joke, but there's little to see at 1/72 so I'm going to keep it minimal, and the one in the movie was mostly black anyhow. Some colored knobs and belts otta do it.

That's why I went with a PE set.

The floor and seats look better with the metal add ons but the floor is to high and the landing gear well won't let you drop it much unless your doing wheels up or are building an earlier model.

I plan to open some of the windows so that's why I'm adding all the junk inside.Tongue [:P]

Eric...I've lost track; way too much torpedo juice, and the BVD hasn't updated the front page in a while. What's your project?

2 cat's

One silver retired 5a (1973) and the same plane years later in aqua and NUMA painted on the side.

Both described in Clive Cussler "Dirk Pitt" novels.

The Mediterranean Caper (Mayday UK version) and Deep Six.

Once they are done if I still have time I might get around to the 1/48 as a PTO like my avatar.

Wow that's neat. Really, I've never read any of those books but I will. I've got a week at the beach coming up soon, good time to take a good book as it's going to be raining.

Tonight I ordered resin wheels from Squadron, as I don't want to use the rubber tires Academy seems to think are nice. I also included Eduard canopy masks as they were essentially free- same as the cost of shipping.

I primed the whole thing in gray- I realized that black plastic is kind of impossible to model- can't see a thing!!! I'm going to omit the half circle walks in the side gunner positions, figure they wouldn't be there. Tonite the wings, and tomorrow start to figure out the larger nacelle designs.

You'll also have to remove the machinegun stands in the bubble area.

If your interested in Cussler books the Cusslermen site has a list of all his books and a brief discription of them.

When I first started out I was reading 4 a week.

I'm going to see if I can find some grey primer today.

Since my silver plane will be wheels up and it was actually a 5 modified to a 5a I lowered the cockpit floor.

It also gives me space for the pilot figure that I was working on.

Just received a signal from the BVD.  Seems his PBY "broke down" on an island full of torpedo juice totin' bikini models and he shall be stuck there until the first of March.  He asked that I pass on the message, and also said NOT to send out a search party. Evil [}:)]

Hi folks, out of curiosity...does anyone know on the PBY how the tunnel gun hatch opens? Does it slide over, hinge up, etc? Can't seem to find a picture that shows the hatch in its open position. Thanks.

Hey all. No postings here for a few days so I figured I'd post some pics of my build. Nothing fancy, still finishing off the interior...did a little scratchbuilding for the radio/navigator compartment. Kept this very simple since I figured through those thick Revell windows you won't see much. I just didn't want it to look completely empty.

Looking good.

I take it your plane will be unarmed or are you reworking the bullets?

I got most of the bulkheads installed in one of my birds, working on the cockpit for it than will be adding the radio room tables and equipment.

Nice work there Hot pb. Does hot pb stand for Hot Pink Cutting Board?  Wow that is snazzy!  I like what you did to the radio compartment! The Fire extinguisher was also a nice touch!  No bullets in the chutes!   The Wheel gear look good as well!

Haha...HEY!!! You know, the hot pink ones are alot cheaper. Gotta love Walmart's craft section. And the bullets in the chutes are a comin...I have some extra photoetch .50 cal ammo belts from Eduard I wanted to try and add. Might be a little tricky but I figured it might spruce the guns up a bit, the blisters are wide open.

Looking good.

Those are cool looking belts.

________________________________________________________________________________

So I'm bored and looking for more pix using a new word search and came across something that would make a neat addition to those doing WWII planes.

Ship recognition charts posted next to the blisters on the fore bulkhead.

2 pix here

Be forwarned one of the gunners is nude (side shot) appearantly right after rescuing someone seen in the other pic with the 2 guy's smoking.

So I've spent a little time looking without much success.

Anyone know of a site with these charts that are free.

Found a couple scans of pages from books for sale but not really like the ones in the pix.

Still doing some work on the nose/cockpit area on this one than I'll be starting on the radio room area.

Same goes for the one in the background.

Need to hook up my AB soon so I can shoot some green in there.

Hey all. I'm adding nose weigths to my 1/48 PBY now and was wondering if anyone had actually tried to weigh how much was needed so she'd sit forward. I did find an online build by Dave Manter where he describes adding almost 6 oz. That seems like alot to me, but he says he added it right behind the cockpit, where there's admittedly more room. Filling the area right below and forward of the cockpit I doubt I'd get that much in there.

Put in more than you think you need. I put in 8 .40 bullets in mine and had to add more after I closed up the monster. Sad [:(]

I ordered a Terry Dean pre-fabbed noseweight for mine, here is some info I posted here earlier:

 Daywalker wrote:

Excellent work Mac!  You're really going to town on this baby.  Do you work?  How the heck do you find time to do all of this modeling?

On the question of nose weights, have you guys seen these?  They are custom made by a guy named Terry Dean for specific aircraft.

Terry Dean nose weights

I ordered some from him a while back, and they arrived today- including some for a 1/48 Monogram PBY!  I also bought some for the Academy P-38.  Here's a photo or two:

I shall take the PBY one to work tomorrow, and weight it on my gem scale and report back with it's exact weight. Approve [^]

I dunno Bondo! I is worring bout the Namster myself!  Not even a note in a bottle as of late? Hmmmm

This was my solution to the weight issue in the nose. It is a lot of weight!

 sfcmac wrote:

Ok I think I am ready to put the fuselage and stuff together. I made my weights. Made six stacks of 10 pennies and added 2 more per stack to keep it even. 72 cents so six stacks of 12 pennies which exceeds Franks calculations by 4 cents.

A quick glue together than wrapped them in masking tape. Wanted to ensure the hold together as not to make a PBY piggy bank.  Glad I did so as they actually can be seen through those futured side windows. The tape makes them look like tarp covered something or others. Besides if I had a giant penny showing up in my PBY Chuk may sue for copy-right infringement, Laugh [(-D]Pirate [oX)]Mischief [:-,]Taped Shut [XX]

Got a hair on the window! Hmmm. Anyways plenty of weight. It is dispursed between all 3 gear pretty well and  foresee no issues but it is surprisingly heavy.  Takes a lot to get it to even pivot. Sat the tail and wing pieces on the rear fin. Didn't move.  More than enough should anyone decide to weight it. Not as refined as Frank or Nam , but it works!  Thank you much for the weight and number of pennies Frank it worked well for me! Thumbs Up [tup]

It looks like it would take an awful lot of water but then I thought so too and the hurricane surge came really close to us.  Just thinking of that stash Sean. Shame for the decals to get all wet.  You take care it can rise pretty fast.

And you Nam! I work with a mouse in one hand a paint brush in the other!  Dee is somewhere in the middle! Blush <img src=" border="0" width="15" height="15" /> I took both your advice after I finally pryed it outta yer aniebrietated carcus! # stacks are Seans color and 3 yours to keep it fair. Variety wasn't a bad idea. Gives contrast!  I also took Sean's mention of a stencil. Not USN but I had a few spare Navy decals in black which you can read thru the windows now. Pretty cool!  Thank you fellows!

A little fading with dull coat and rubbing alcohol and I'll close er up. Unless you have any further complaints sir?  Nap time for me gotta work tonight! I was on a roll too! Confused <img src=" border="0" width="19" height="15" />

Wow...that's alot of weight, and it looks like most folks are also resorting to placing the weight behind the cockpit area. I'm going to have to rethink this a bit. I do like the idea of disguising the weight as various NAVY sundries. Maybe I can shape a piece of lead in the form of cases of beer bottles!
